Hello sophie bean,

Maura´s case is such a very confusing and complex one that I try hard to keep an open mind as for the many possible scenarios.

I find it highly interesting that you actually heard a radio report stating that Maura went missing from Rt 10.

Do you distinctly recall that the report said that she actually "went missing" from Rt 10?
If that is indeed correct, then this would be a remarkable fact, as I´ve never seen that mentioned in any other reports on the web.

As a journalist I find it extremely strange that such information would not find its way into other media dealing with Maura´s case.

In Maribeth Conway´s excellent series in the Whitman-Hanson-East Bridgewater Express it is clearly being stated that the first reported "mystery" accident occurred on Swiftwater Road, which according to the Google maps is a minor road between Cottage Hospital to the west and Rt 112 in Swiftwater village to the east.

Do you possibly recall if it was mentioned on what particular stretch of Rt 10 Maura was supposed to have gone missing?

If I remember my map studies correctly the NH 10 follows the Connecticut River Valley for quite some distance south of Haverhill and then continues NE jointly with the US302 at least as far as Littleton.

Please, tell us all that you can remember about that mysterious reference to Rt 10.
Thanks!

I understand why most people think the Saturn had not finished its driver's intended trip, but maybe not? Maybe where it was left was about as far as it was intended to go? Or about as far as Maura was intended to go?
The Saturn is, understandably, often considered "found." In other words, it is viewed from our perspective as having come across it after what occurred and about which we are so curious. Maybe it would be more helpful to think, sometimes, of the Saturn as having been "left" at that spot - for whatever reason. It may sound like a differnce without a distinction, but it may just offer a slightly better perspective.
Ok....my curiosity is piqued, but I'm not caught up with you yet. Please talk further on this distinction.

It's been posited that one reason it was found precisely where it was has to do with the funky legal jurisdictional lines and the way they converge right in that area.

I do keep circling back to Dr Godwin's opinion that Maura was attacked by a serial rapist who lives "locally" and who has done this - abduction - at least twice before. The first reason that this gets my attention is that Maura has vanished SO completely. If she was a victim of a crime - and I'm sorry to say that I believe that she was - it seems to me that the perpetrator was someone who had planned this carefully and had done it before. As far as it being someone local, I guess that's possible. There are a lot of sexual offenders that are registered in the immediate area - and those are the ones that we know about. This sounds like a very particular sort of criminal, though. Someone who's pretty sociopathic, I'd guess (I'm no expert, but it seems likely)- so that eliminates some people as persons of interest. BUT I wonder about the "local" piece, and if it could be someone who worked locally and lived elsewhere, or someone who travelled (or travels, present tense) through the area often. Both of these possibilities lean toward the idea of a crime of opportunity to me - not someone who was stalking Maura, but someone who was looking for a specific kind of person, and Maura was that person.
Very definitely a possibility, sophie. I know some people get very uspet at the suggestion of a "random" encounter with a serial killer or other untoward person, but the truth of the matter is, even serial killers live SOMEWHERE. Yes, it was unlikely that any of Ted Bundy's victims would encounter him at just the opportune moment that led to their deaths--but the fact was, they did. "Random" sadly means neither impossible nor sometimes even unlikely.

Cottage Hospital change of shifts, half a dozen cars seen by Atwood (and maybe he missed some while trying unsuccessfully to reach police from the radios on the porch?), some parents passing the weathered barn after picking up their kids who'd been dropped off after ski trip?, and wasn't there some kind of PTA meeting that night too? CS passed 5-7 cars en route from Petticoat Lane; then the rescue vehicles, Monaghan, etc. Even someone like Maura might not be that good at ducking all that activity! Is it too late 4-1/2 years later, for an interested group to get useful information from an organized house-to-house inquiry of what people had seen that night???

Just Me and others who know how to contact me, please email or call. I'll be off-line for a month or two due to major house repairs. Hope you all discover new facts to help find Maura.

FireCat,

Sorry, but as far as I have been able to ascertain no links were provided to either blog by elsewherebriefly.
I´m pretty sure about that, or I missed some such reference way back on this board...

Just a few of "it probably isn't important"..But, IF Maura came off X17..down into Wells River...across the CT River into Woodsville...At the intersection of 302/10 ...IF she turned left onto 302/10...then down a few miles is the right onto 112..which is called Wild Ammonoosuc (sp)?
IF she had turned right at the intersection of 302/10..she would have turned left onto
Swiftwater Road..(the Cottage Hospital) This latter seems unlikely cuz there is no sign
that says anything like TO xxxx any town.
At the intersection of 302/10 are signs..as well as at the entrance to 112 East.....
We as part time tourists used to refer to Wild Ammonoosuc Rd as the "Swiftwater Road"
meaning because it took us to Swiftwater..(covered bridge) And Swiftwater is a blink of the eye belonging to Bath..not Woodsville.
Route 112 starts as Wild Ammonoosuc..and as it wends its way East changes names,
I guess depending what town line..? Benton..? Easton..? Lisbon..? Landaff?
Haven't got my dog eared maps..and don't feel like looking up those towns now.

One last thing I will never forget is...at the scene ..car is locked..and CS said "some of
the bottles...? some of the alcohol....?..were missing"..How do you know some is
missing if you didn't know what was there...? The box of Franzia (sp?) wine was visible
Little thing, I know....but..huh..?

One fact is that Maura's belongings were in her car,( car registered to her father.)

PS Beth heard about it on her car radio too..within a day or two...can't recall
what Beth told me though..maybe someone else remembers what Beth said.

Shack, I remember everything about everyone I'ved met on both Brianna's and Maura's forum. My memory is like an iron trap,it's both my blessing and my bane.
However, Maura's is not the only name that I've thought of each morning the past four years.
What's worse is that there seems to be new names of cold cases added each day. Sophie understands, The Missing & Remembered. It was the backdrop of Maura's forum and site. Maura's cause so to speak.
I'd sincerely like to focus my one hour of morning laptop time on all of the Missing & Remembered throughout New England.

Regarding the "funky jurisdictional lines" - the spot where the Saturn was found is JUST over the line in Bath (I think)- the town line between Bath and Haverhill is within a stone's throw of the corner. I haven't been over there in a little while, so I may have it backwards - but I don't think so. I remember driving through the area and being struck by the proximity of the town line.

And, I am 99% sure SBD didn't go home, from the school, using Swiftwater Road...when it was a zip of a few miles going 40 - 45? on 302/10 and right onto his 112 road..(Wild Ammonoosuc)
another 1 or 2 miles.
Wouldn't make any sense to me for him to drive that long way around up Swiftwater Road.

Eurobserver, that is what I heard "went missing from Rt 10." Again, it's entirely possible that it was a mistake, but I heard Rt. 10 and noted it, because I travel somewhat on Rt. 10, but never on 112. I remember making a point to look out for anything I might see along the road. I definitely wouldn't have done that on 112. Did I really hear "near Rt 10" (don't think so) or did it get misreported and actually mean "near Rt 10"? I don't know. Probably.

I wouldn't think so much about it except for the fact that 10 is a MUCH better, more traveled road than 112, and I could see her getting off at some other exit from 91 to get gas, food, whatever. I keep thinking about that convenience store in North Haverhill - did she stop there? did someone see her?

How many missing persons and murder victims in ME/NH/VT/QC were last seen at a convenience store?
I haven't checked - though I should - but the number seems pretty high.

Agreed, Shack. Secondary roads, evem if it isn't snowing, can be frozen, icy and slippery. Unless there was a huge amount of time to be saved - which there wasn't, quite the contrary - and even then, it wouldn't make muh sense. If I remember correctly, Swiftwater Road has some elevation to it, too, so more likely to be slippery.

By the way, Shack recently pointed out a conversation she had with "Fred & Ethel." Fascinating stuff - especially the part about people speaking up and getting "blown off" - I've been to my share of NE town meetings where dissenting or just questioning voices were shouted down and told to shut up.
You could almost call that "controlling the forum" - couldn't you?
And here we are, with a varying opinions, being told to just drop it and not insult the great state of NH etc.
Well, I don't much like people attempting to control me, and it doesn't work well, so if our attempts to find out what happened to Maura, to find and bring to justice perpetrator or perpetrators and (to use Shack's perfectly correct word) SCUM who knowingly protect perpetrators* is annoying to some, too bad.

* There are, actually, violent perpetrators in NH. Bad people. On the loose. A danger to their ommunities. There are perpetrators just about anywhere, although not "on every parcel of land." Most civilized, intelligent people are anxious to NOT have perpetrators on the loose. Huh. To be clear, am I saying that people who don't want perpetrators on the loose endangering others are uncivilized and not intelligent? Yes, I am saying that.

If I understand this correctly, in about 14 percent of murders committed between 1976-2005, the victims and murderers were unknown to each other. What strikes me as surprising is the 35 percent of murders in which any relationship between the victim and the murderer was unknown.

Euro,

Yikes, I'm always one to keep my promises!

I've really contibuted all that I can. The links to the material I reviewed and followed the past four years has been kindly added to Maura's website.

A couple of things did pop into my mind today that I believe may be important.

Although I do not recall who exactly used the word but it was a member of LE working Muara's case.

1) TRANSIENT - This word is something to think about and consider. Especially the people/lurkers who are taking offense and lashing out.

I saw my fair share of transients at the beach during the wintertime. Off season rentals.
I believe that Lovie Riddle is a good example of a transient as well. He moved back and forth between NH and Tenn.

The NH State Police changed their radio scanner codes back in the late eighties to coincide with the FBI.

I've often wondered if they did this because they felt that person(s) knew the local codes and were following calls made on certain frequencies. Possibly the POA being a fellow man in blue.

With all due respect for the dead, McKay was infamous for driving like a bat out of hell out of his jurisdiction on calls he heard over the radio. I believe certain officers requested that their freqencies be changed because of this.

I know that both of these scenerios are at opposite ends of the spectrum but they are things I remembered today.

I'd also like apologize for not reading the last gazillion posts since my farewell salutation yesterday (LOL). I caught Euros question so I figured I'd address it.

Perhaps the first accident...Anne heard on scanner
was on 10...corner of 112...by the campground..
left in private vehicle..her own vehicle as she
limped along 112/Wild Ammonoosuc Rd.
And, McKay..re:Dispatch left Littleton around
7PM...(don't have dispatch copies here) and
and the next accounting he reappeared a bit after
9PM that night at Franconia Motel."reason unknown"

I can sense the "NUTs" appearing above...piffle!

No big deal about the difference without a distinction.

When I think of a car being "left" or parked somewhere, I tend to think of the act of LEAVING the car at that location. This visualization includes a person in the act of leaving it there.

When I think of a car as being FOUND, I tend to visualize the car as being discovered, by a police officer, for example, with no one around, which is obviously after the car has been left behind. That's all.

Maybe the former is more useful at certain times, maybe not. Just a suggestion.

Please consider bringing back Pffftttt (or however it was spelled). Where else is anyone going to see something that original and fresh (good fresh, not bad fresh). Nothing against piffle, but... it's just not the same.
