In some articles she described as being quite private and reserved, yet it others she described as being the person sought out by others. She was described as being very close to her high school friends, but when described by other students as Umass, she kept to herself. I'm not implying anything by it, its just interesting to me. Wondering what the tructh is also about the "statement" in one article that Billy Rausch made about how he felt something was wrong in one of their last conversations but in other articles he says that he didn't notice anything different. Without rereading everything, was there recently something posted about someone being in Maura's dorm room prior to Billy arriving? I swear I read it here, but now can't locate it (that might be because I have to get to work and am not looking as carefully as I could be too) I thought it was in one of the recent links that Whiston posted, but alas, it's Tuesday and my brain is apparently already mush. consider that she was a transfer student...and meeting the demands of reintegrating her social and academic life from a more structured campus environment to....well....UMASS. just meeting the requirements of a changed major can set one back a year.

Hello looking4amoose,
I think the passage you were looking for was contained in the article (post # 3450) which Whiston recently posted here.
It´s from Gary Lindley´s article and appears to suggest that Maura´s sister Kathleen had been calling her father from Maura´s room, presumably in the Kennedy dorm of UMass Amherst. This surely must have been before Maura´s boyfriend Billy Rausch arrived there.
I´ve never seen this fact (to my knowledge) mentioned anywhere else by the media, so I´m wondering whethere it may be incorrectly reported my Mr Lindley or not.
Journalists/reporters do make many mistakes like that due to time constraints, not taking the time to check notes/sources, etc, etc - believe me....
Murray did say Maura was upset about something that had happened over the weekend. He also said whatever it was wasn't a big deal. Shivering in a light coat as he spoke about his daughter, Murray said he didn't know she was missing until another one of his children, Kathleen, called him Tuesday from Maura's apartment.

I'm very curious too about one article saying Kathleen called Fred TUESDAY from Maura's APARTMENT. I thought Maura lived in the dorm? As others said, this could be the "breaking news" errors, but I never knew Kathleen went there Tuesday! LE says Cecil Smith called "Fred" a number of times including Monday night, Tuesday morning, and several times Tuesday afternoon. Fred said there was just one message on his machine in CT. Did Kathleen get the messages at home and head out to Amherst? Was that before UMass police? The more people gaining entry into Maura's dorm room, the more possible a "note" got lost or removed!

Quija, Whiston & all,
It´s quite possible that the reporter (Mr Lindley) got "confused" and wrote "apartment" instead of "dorm room", just as it´s equally possible that he may have got facts mixed-up when suggesting that Kathleen Murray called her father from Maura´s "apartment" (or more likely dorm romm) to report her disappearance as early as on Tuesday 10th February.
Obviously, there are several discrepancies here compared to other media reports. The question is how to trace and find the true facts of these question marks.

From the same article: Haverhill police officers, he (Fred) said, had called Maura's home. Maura's "home" and phone number as listed on the police report is the same as Fred's home in Weymouth, MA. Wouldn't it be standard protocol to call that number and leave messages there to reach either Maura or Fred? Maybe Kathleen has a key to the Weymouth home(apt.?), let herself in, retrieved the messages from HPD and called from that location to Fred in Connecticut, then proceeded directly to Haverhill, NH.

Like you or anyone else on this site I'm sure the Deputy would appreciate being asked vs assuming having wrong personal information being posted but that doesn't cross the forum minds does it from I have seen! It seems ok to take people's personal lives and turn them upside down regardless of their involvement or not! I'm sure all here would be ok just those who living in the area to sit for dinner only to find people looking in their windows wandering their property they have no rights anymore! looking4amoose wrote: <quoted text> That video shows nothing that you would see on the passenger side of the car--where Swiftwater Circle would intersect. It shows the drivers side well but not the passenger side. As far as whether the Grafton Cty Sherriff lived there in 2004, I don't know. I actually hecked the property assessment for 2006 to see if he owned then--that's my only frame of reference right now. If I happen to see him the next time I'm there I will ask him.(yeah, I'm bold like that)

Fred was in Bridgeport, CT on a contracting assignment as a nuclear technician. I believe he had an apt. there. I believe Maura stayed there during a short period of time before the spring semester officially began and after her Christmas vacation with Billy was over.
I thought that in feb. 04, Kathleen lived at home in Mass. with her mom and 2 brothers? She had a boyfriend she has since married. I think there are 4 separate households, including Amherst: Fred's in Mass, Laurie's (with Kathleen, Freddie and Kurt) in Mass., Fred's temp. in Bridgeport,CT and Maura at the dorm in Amherst. Someone else can fill in the Hanson/Weymouth distinction....

In general, Gary Lindsley (sp) has an excellent rep as a journalist. Just from what I've heard. And read. I think he's the one to trust. (Along with the Hansen Express journalist.)

Not totally off-topic: A book, "The Shack",(sorry shack) about a Great Sadness, not unlike Maura's disappearance: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/24/books/24sha... Unorthodox book makes clear the gift of friends or family who deal with the public, the media during a tragedy and take that pressure off the grieving closest ones. Makes it clear why some closest family didn't post on the forums. But it's about a lot more than that, whatever you believe.

Those of us "living in the middle of no where" THANK YOU! BACK TO FACTS! From the HANSON EXPRESS Fred Murray also disputes a statement by Williams that they left several messages for him after the crash. “The truth is, I got one message and it was 3:26 the following day,” he said. If you look at the dispatch log also on the Hanson Express you will noticed what time Mr. Murray returned the call to HPD?????? MMM like to toss around "FIT" forum investigation Team I think in the real world it's more like "FIT" FACTS IT TAKES! quija wrote: <quoted text> Like with me trying to track down Mr. Stone from the Barton, VT church, I'd assume everyone would start out graciously, cautiously, from a distance, with discretion, tact, humility and diplomacy ---- all those qualities that we possess (haha)! White Wash,
A young man who worked on the EMS that night was quoted as saying that everyone thought Maura's was a classic DUI leaving the scene scenerio. He was new to the position and it has stayed with him all of these years. Although I wish more was done during those crucial 48 hours everyone admits they wished things had happened differently.
I was thankful that the individual, a local, posted this.
In 2005 a set protocol was adopted into Law for all Missing Adults.
By the way, I'd give anything to live out in the middle of nowhere, off the grid. It actually costs a lot of money to do so. It's in my longterm plans though.
Yankee,
It is quite difficult gaining residency in Canada actually. It took my sister several years to gain her Canadian residency just this past year and she has been married to a Canadian for twelve years if this tells you anything.

Hi All,
I managed to change a country in the last few hours, but I'm still on the forum :-)
'Searches by air are a good idea, just wondering whether that works through tree cover as there seems to be so much forest in that general area?'
That's a good point, unfortunately I do not have enough knowledge to answer that. There is however a lot of literature about using these methods in finding mass graves in former Yougoslavia - and I do bet there were forests there as well.
'Construction digging can turn up burial sites, but even if not, aerial heat search could still pinpoint possible areas to check even in construction sites.'
Heat, or analysing the plants etc. There is a sudden difference in the growth and types of them in the place of the burial. The other thing, when the body decomposes, it collapses and part of the ground 'sank'. That can be detected, for what I understood, as the ground is suddenly lowered in certain places.
Another thing is, noone reported the body to be found during any construction work so far ... that MAY mean nothing has been found and construction sites are off the hook (?)
'But, point to remember: the ground in that entire region in February of 2004 was apparently frozen, pretty hard to dig with anything other than a backhoe or similar large equipment.'
That is very true - and also, I guess trees may be an obstacle because of their roots. For what I can see in the books, the most popular location for a body to be buried - in a case of murder - is underneath the floorboards :-(
