sophie b -- if she fell and got hurt on the rocky, icy river or slope, she'd have been found. No, I wouldn't go into the rugged terrain there at night, in winter, an unfamiliar place to boot. But it depends on what's motivating you, what your intention is. As to location, I wasn't referring to SBD's immediate backyard or any trail he in his physical condition would be able to search.

Her intention -- not to be found that night? Sadly, consider what her father immediately told the police he hoped she was not doing... friends, supervisor, etc. were worried too about her state of mind, what was bothering her, before she left Amherst...

Believe she tucked herself into heavy brush which wouldn't be quickly searched, not more than 1/2-1 mile north/northwest of SBD's and away from houses.

Leaving it at hoping that area gets searched, especially the areas hardest to get to, if they haven't been already.

Some facts that people who live in the area should already know - "north of the river" beyond SBDs house would mean going down what looks to me like quite a steep and undoubtedly icy as well as unfamiliar river bank into a freezing river. A river which looks plenty deep and full of holes and big rocks. Would you cross that river at night, in an unfamiliar place, knowingly risking your life to avoid...what?
How about a drunk driving charge? Seems likely that she was drinking, drunk or not. Most that flee an accident do so because of fear of being caught about something. Let’s not forget that she already had run away from school. Telling a big lie to get the time to get away. I think that this was possibly her second accident in maybe minutes. The first damaging the front of the car causing the airbags to deploy. Scared about getting in trouble she runs even harder having a second accident at the area where the bus driver finds her. She flees that area on foot.
sophie bean wrote:
That's not what Maurice Godwin has said he thinks, on several occasions.
The river would probably have been crossable at that time. The water is not deep and there are areas along the bank that it could be done. I don’t think she did that. I do think she fled both accidents because of drinking. I am sure Dr. Godwin didn’t say that the person, who abducted Maura, if that’s what happened, had to be right at the scene. It is likely that she got away as she wished and was abducted later, maybe many miles from the accident.

J Can Do,
yes, i noticed sophie bean was dismissive on other boards. Guess h/she is now posting here too.

River seems to us also to be unusually rocky and
hazardous in that way, but not deep. Whether or not she was drinking, there was an open container in the car, so I agree with your thinking she fled from that.

If that accident was the last straw for her, there's at least one spot near the scene she could've gotten into the woods. If she was coping well with all the events in her life, she might have fled on foot, made it to another place and then been abducted there, as you suggested. But the drinking, the lies, the crying jag at work, rejecting help... I think the accidents and the SBD threatening to call police might've felt like the last straw, especially if someone was drinking.

I just spent time at a bed and breakfast, 157.00 for 2 days in Cold springs. We looked up directions on the pc, tried calling a couple resorts and just flat out got lucky once in town. I brought my sketch pad, teeth whitener and music cds. I lied to the asses at work that I was going somewhere with 'mom' or they would not have let me go this past weekend. We stopped and bought booze along the way. The survelance camera will show I was alone even though my 'hubby' was in the car. He put the room in his name and I went out fishing alone the first day. I was constantly reminded just how vulnerable I was out there alone when anybody got to close and not another soul around.

Give Maura a break please on taking off like she did. I know she seemed to want to tell Billy more the night she ran into the guardrails with freds car........but in the email the next day she said she didn't feel like talking to much of anyone......implying not even him. I really do think she'd've called her dad though if she could and had every intention of getting a room.

Forgot to say, Maura could take a week off school because there were no classes, correct? She really only had to justify leaving the campus and explain not being at her art job.

Up or down the road in NH (depending on which way 'Maura' was heading)......someone ran into some guard rails. Maura was a new driver and not good around guardrails it seems......the officer who gave her a lift to freds motel room should be identified in private. Just another thought here about someone driving Maura off the road.......could be and let's say she was being blackmailed somehow to show up in NH with just herself, x amount of money, or something to clear any say 'DUI' charges that might have been in the works from Fred's car wreck that night.

One more thing. Somebody from within the campus building called Maura's work station the night Maura was on duty. They don't talk about this anymore and it's suspicious to me.

Why would she lie to professors saying that there was a death in the family if she didn't need to?

And if that was aimed at me it will do no good. I will look and discuss anything that seems pertinent. It has to do with finding Maura not being PC or it offending anybodies particular sensibilities.

No, I'm not sensoring you Quija, really, I was just thinking about my trip and Sophie bean and why everybody gets the undies in a bunch about the drinking, etc........I like hearing what you may be thinking and it makes me think too as we all try to get closer to the answers. That's why I like it here, we can talk freely and so we drop things faster that way. I'm glad to know that you've been in Haverhill and think so much of Maura that you would give yourself up to it. Beth used to do everything under the sun to get a handle on things, going places to see for herself. We were going to drive over together this mid June and today has been especially unbearable for me.

Yeah, please believe me. I'm only throwing things out there, no inuendos from me usually.

A constant request for assistance is made by those most devoted to finding Maura, even if a tip, suggestion, theory, or observation seems trivial or irrelevant.

A Topix poster offers a well written, soundly developed theory, but ignores specific, constructive questions about it by a second poster.

Then a third poster, who is very devoted to finding Maura, implies that the questions asked by the second poster deliberately interfere with finding Maura.

Whether or not one agrees with it, quija has presented an excellent, tactfully stated, well reasoned theory that should be respected, but if it gets no serious attention, then what’s the point of this board? Or the point of any other board with a similar purpose?

Would those most devoted to finding Maura kindly provide one or two detailed examples of what they believe a good theory looks like?

What, specifically, should a good theory include and what should it avoid?

How does quija’s theory stack up against this?

Do those most devoted to finding Maura have a theory of their own? If so, is it in writing, and where can it be read?

If there existed at least one clear model theory to look at, it just might help find Maura faster. Assuming that’s the point of discussion boards like this.

just me,

Are you saying Maura had no classes to attend during the week of February 9?

What "art job" are you referring to?

Thanks.

Thinking about last straws.......I can relate to that. A guy was talked off the bridge last month but he slipped and died on the freeway below anyway. I know these things happen and it would be so sad to find the remains of our deeply loved maura......

But dang it anyway, why was her car like that. Why was it said to have backed up parallel to the road, that's not how you slam into any snowbank. And why, what took so long, why were personal items from the car given back to family.....(they took all those items into custody several weeks later)....why is Maura's car sitting in the outdoors to this day? Potential evidence, tainted. And it just pisses me off that Fred cannot get a copy of the computers hard drive at least . WTF is keeping all the public records private? Who's gonna lose face.......oh wait, I'm derailing here. I just want to know why Maura's car was planted there and if it wasn't planted there who took a sledgehammer to it type thing because this damage did not occur from spinning out and hitting the trees, the snowbank, ice chunks or any other BS they have to sat about the findings. GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

Claysoup, I hear ya, we need to give each other credit at least once on each note. As for classes, I don't think there were any to miss for that week. Maura had a job working at an art store, I thought you even mentioned that once.

So the tone here is started to sound like a group who just want to be able to toss ideas around freely, not hurt anyone intentionally, etc.

Just me --- I really enjoyed your saying there aren't any inuendos from you INTENTIONALLY. That was kinda funny.

There are a lot of good questions posed here, but I know I've been programmed not to answer them and to let the person research them from media reports or from several good series, like the Hanson Express series. I'm so used to getting slammed on my answer. So that might be why some of us aren't ignoring questions, just trying not to get burned.

I thought Maura went back to school early, she was staying with her dad; I believe her clinical studies had already started, and her classes had been in session for about 2 weeks when she left.(SLAM!)

No-one knows even which direction the car was heading before it wound up backed into the snowbank. It could've backed out (the acceleration) from a wrong turn or spinout onto the dirt road which is a linear continuation of Route 112 at the sharp turn at the weathered barn. Or who knows what other way it wound up like that.

I understand Maura worked 2 part-time jobs, one at a currently-unidentified art gallery and the other at a dorm entrance security desk job.(SLAM!)

And, Just Me, I've done more things in life that could be misconstrued to make me look bad than anything I've ever read about Maura... so, having belabored my point over the last week, I'll let it go ---(But first, sorry) it's just that it hit us so hard. Two of us had lived in the woods over 30 miles from even a ranger station, much further from real civilization, no electricity, etc., and one of us is straight, serious, and former military intelligence. And that's not me --- I'm just the one who lived in the woods. The third was knocked over by this same idea --- OK, now I'll really drop it. That was the best I could do about "credentials". Pathetic, really.
