Shack wrote: TX Quija, and Firecat for trying to answer my question re: written directions on index card. I was just about ready to yell for Elsewhere or Mcsmom. My thought was/is that when I have to go to a new destination....I will write, in large print, my version, to help me, as I drive...(ie X23, lf at XXX, rt at XXX etc) easier than reading a map or printout on route. Way back when "The Berkshires" were discussed..my thoughts were that would make sense because those towns in Berkshire County are geographically close to UM...and would naturally have students from that county....a plan to visit a fellow student/friend? I assume LE has found all her friends and acquaintances, either by computer or an address book. Bottom line, whether Berkshires, Stowe, Burlington, or Bartlett, I still think that Maura justed needed a break and/or time to think and re-group. Euro..I remember that photograph...Even the black dresses were similar....I thought the same thing....I recall that it was mentioned in the Forum....I don't recall if she was ever identified...? Relative..? Friend..? Dunno...perhaps someone here will tell us who she is. Hello Shack, Interesting thoughts of yours there regarding the darkhaired young lady in the picture looking a bit like a taller and "bigger" version of Maura. And yes, I also remember them wearing identical dresses at some kind of party. They looked so alike in that photo that I at first mistakenly thought they were sisters. There is another photo of Maura sitting in a bar or restaurant with a whole lot of female friends. This same darkhaired girl is sitting next to Maura in that other picture and looking very "chummy". Anyone knows who she is? I can´t disregard the presumption that the school bus driver may well have misidentified that other girl as Maura in the darkness at the Weathered Barn curve. If Maura felt nervous about driving the Saturn north from Amherst, perhaps her female friend might have ventured to do so as a kind of "helper". Just a wild and completely unsubstantiated theory, I know, but for lack of known facts we may perhaps be allowed to speculate...

pansie wrote: I still believe that there is a chance that Maura had/has schizophrenia, which I believe explains many puzzling things about this case, and about her behavior. It could explain the car accidents; why she was drinking; why she could not sleep; why her behavior (the sudden crying, etc.) was so perplexing; it possibly might even explain why the rag was in the tailpipe of her car, as one person pointed out. Based on what I have heard of her behavior, I think there is some chance that she was delusional, and that possibly these delusions pertained to her family (because in the first crying spell, when her supervisor asked her what was wrong, she said, "my sister, my sister"; and before she allegedly left Amherst, she wrote her professors that she had a family emergency). So, I think she may have been going somewhere that she had been to before with her family, for reasons that only Maura would know. And if she is out there, and mentally ill, then I wonder if she would return to the place where she was headed that night. So if I were the family, that's where I would put the "missing" posters- near trailheads of hikes the family had done, places the family had stayed, etc., so that if someone saw her they would know that she was a missing person. Maybe everyone in that area knows of her, I don't know. I really hope my pushing the mental illness issue isn't offensive to anyone. Mason ~ You suggest this post offers hope that Maura may be alive? How so?

If she is mentally ill, she will have been in jail sometime during the last 5 years probably, so a fingerprint check nationwide might turn up something, assuming her prints are on file and I'm guessing they are as part of the admissions process at West Point (routine Department of Defense stuff). Run those prints in the NCIC computer and there could be some hits, but under a different name probably. Check the associated photo and you'll see a more recent picture of her with details. Next, contact NAMI, the National Association for the Mentally Ill and have them publish a photo of her in their monthly newsletter (I think it's monthly). Contact all the missions in New England and enclose a photograph on a flyer. Someone may remember seeing her. Just for a start.

I tried finding the photo of Maura and her friend in their black dresses on the maura missing site and linked sites but couldn't find it.

I wonder if Maura ever expressed an interest in visiting a particular part of the country, maybe San Francisco for example. Might be worth checking that area out.

In fact, Government offices and their affiliates are hold to a higher standard of enforcement than general businesses/school. I'm not saying she was mentally ill though--I'm saying that she could've gotten in without disclosing a disability, and mental illness is often not disclosed due to the potential for discrimination. I don't do cell phones for a living, but I do do disabilities and case management for the disabled for a living.

FireCat wrote: <quoted text> Right. And someone was asking if Maura had a record of mental illness or hospitalizations. My answer to that was undoubtedly no because of West Point. I'm sure they do background checks of all sorts of things, and full medical disclosure etc. I know someone who just last summer was denied entry to the military (I don't remember in what capacity) because he'd had a prescription written for Ritalin within the past 18 months. Never mind that he hadn't actually had to TAKE any. Just the prescription was enough for them. And he did not volunteer the information. /It may be related to the actual Ritalin, not the associated ADHD disability though...it's a tightly controlled substance in this country.....primary care docs often Rx Ritalin, so by allowing the PCP to release the information, the Ritalin gets noticed. Most PCP's don't treat pschiatric disorders---mostly dabble in depression and attention deficit problems--but not anything else, so the release of medical information doesn't release the other psychiatric disorders.

V. creative thinking on your part. Perhaps a committee can be formed to follow-through with your suggestions. Do you suppose an NCIC check has already been performed by authorities, given Maura is a missing person (though not yet known to have a proven mental disability)? http://www.fas.org/irp/agency/doj/fbi/is/ncic... C. Missing Persons: 1. A person of any age who is missing and who is under proven physical/mental disability or is senile, thereby subjecting that person or others to personal and immediate danger. 2. A person of any age who is missing under circumstances indicating that the disappearance was not voluntary. 3. A person of any age who is missing under circumstances indicating that that person's physical safety may be in danger.

I don't though, think the gas station has been established on this forum. That is not to say that it has not been established in LE or PI circles.....just not Topix.

Any chance Maura had a relationship with a woman as opposed to a heterosexual relationship? May be worth checking to see if she might have gravitated to a gay/lesbian center in a large urban area. A lot of not so large cities have them too. For example, Myrtle Beach, SC. For this search, I would focus on an area of the country that she longed to check-out. Yes, that's why I mentioned San Francisco; but Seattle, Portland, L.A., and San Diego also should be checked out. No, this suggestion has nothing to do with the mental illness angle. It's a different line of thought prompted by Shack's posts, not that she was suggesting that, but I remember getting that "hit" when I saw the photograph of the two women in their black dresses. Then I forgot about it until Shack mentioned the photograph. Some families will not accept homosexuality and their homosexual children hide their homosexuality until they can't stand it anymore and disappear out of their family, although not like this. They tell their parents who then decide not to have anything to do with them. Fortunately, I don't think that happens as often as it used to 20 to 30 years ago. But it still happens.

As I said, if the person meets the qualifications for the job, school etc. and yes, reasonable accomodations can be arranged for if, any only if, you choose to disclose the disability. Absolutely correct, to my understanding, as well.

That? Is possibly the thing ever said about this case, EVER EVER, with which I MOST wholeheartedly agree. Incidentally, the PIs and accident reconstructionist(s?) agree with you: the accident did not happen at the 112 scene. Where? Dunno. If they have a guess, they haven't shared it yet.

A person of any age who is missing under circumstances indicating that that person's physical safety may be in danger. I doubt they checked because it isn't something that would make any sense to until later and by then they may have forgotten to check. A week or so ago, I recommended checking with the IRS and the Social Security Administration to have them run her SSN to see if any employer forms were sent to them regarding $ withheld from paychecks issued to Maura since February, 2004. You can't get a regular paying job in this country without an SSN. Instead, you have to work for cash that no one ever bothers to report or deduct as a business expense. Even if you wait tables for tips, you still have to fill out a W-2. Getting a new SSN is possible, but a lot tougher since 9/11. Before then you could go to a cemetery, find a tombstone indicating a birth year close to yours and a death before age 5, copy down the name, order a copy of the birth certificate at the county office because you "lost your copy," and use the new birth certificate to acquire a whole new set of ID, including a new SSN. How do I know this stuff? You don't want to know because if I told you I'd have to kill you. Tthat's a joke, BTW. Used to be strictly hush-hush info but basically worthless now. M

If you missed the original post to the above response, it read: "Have you guys ever thought of using different threads for different aspects of the discussion?
