Well everyone,
I believe I have said and done all that I can on this particular topix forum.
For those whom know me from Maura's forum I will hope that you take the time to visit and read my new blog.
As always, Maura and her family are in my thoughts and prayers.

Okay, I won't try to hurt feelings of ditz with over-active imagination by asking where her blog is. Must already be posted elsewhere.

Can't remember --- was it Sarah Alfieri who worked at the gallery with Maura? Probably wrong, but if it was Sarah, would it make sense to ask her where she worked? Does she still have family, like Richard Alfieri?, in the Hanson area to get contact info from? Did she stay at UMass to graduate or transfer to another school --- Univ. Nebraska? Maybe the name of the mystery gallery can be revealed?

Just My Opinion wrote:
Although it is evident that a dedicated and compassionate group of individuals mean well by 'investigating' Maura's heartbreaking disappearance, I question whether the 24/7 conjecture and wild accusations will ever conclude with the an answer to the question.
It is fascinating to observe the shifting loyalties, the departures and return of posters, the squabbles and partial resolutions.
Not unlike the Liko Kenney/Bruce McKay threads, the immediate family of Maura Murray is apparently absent from the conversation. Note, please...I said 'immediate' family.
Consider, also, the possibility that this subject and thread has taken on a life of its own. Personalities seem to be compulsively invested in the process of commenting and sleuthing that is based on fantasy as much as fact. It often appears unbalanced and irrational to observers.
A similar challenge exists on the aforementioned threads that relate to Kenney/McKay/Floyd. Wild speculation can sometimes take the place of rationality.
I've been reading some of these threads and I totally agree with JMO. As an outsider some words jump out at me.Fantasy, unbalanced, irrational, and wild speculation are just a few.
I lurked some on the MMM forum before it closed but this Topix forum is a public forum although some of the MMM people are trying to make it into the closed site imo.
While the fantasy goes on and the drama continues the paranoid illusions of a few will keep this mystery from ending. I've seen a couple of people actually from the area and willing to help chased off this thread. And to have people jumped on because their idea might hurt a family member is turning this open and public forum into a closed "family/friend" controlled private forum.
But wait! The immediate family has never posted here and since they have never once replied (that I know of) in either the MMM forum or this one then how possibly do we know if they even bother to watch this. I have to wonder why words must be watched and new ideas are dashed to the ground. Wake up people if you really want to have a chance of finding Maura.
This is quickly becoming a scary fiction..... entertaining but you know it's not real.
OK now you can jump on me but I don't chase off easily.

Beagle,

I was replying to Just My Opinion when I made the ditz comment. I actually understand where he/she is coming from I'm afraid that I my strong opinions might be counterproductive. That's all.

H.P. Albarelli has an online article that has has been updated throughout the years. If you are looking for new reading material his article is a good start. Just google him and his site is listed.

Euro,

Just visit Helena's blog and you can link to mine from there! Please do pay a visit!

That would be huge, really huge. But there has to be some reason it's such a secret. It must have something important to do with Maura's disappearance. ABC and Quality Inn are not secrets. Why the gallery? Maura ever express any interest in guitars, banjos, other fretted instruments?

First Point: With all due respect to these experts -- and I most sincerely mean that -- all their combined expertise has not found Maura in four and a half years. So in a certain sense, we in the forum are on a level playing field with them since we haven't found her either.

Second Point: I fail to note where any of these experts have maintained Maura's name and case in the public eye on a daily basis the way the dedicated forums and threads have done -- this particular thread also being attached to the locale from where she appears to have vanished, which has the added benefit of attracting the attention of local people. If any of these experts is talking to the media every day about Maura and I've missed it, please correct me.

Third Point: Again with every due respect to the experts, all investigation is not done "on the ground" and they would likely be among the first to point that out. They rely strongly on kicking ideas around with others, just as we do here. They have almost certainly made note of ideas that came up on the MMM forum/s and very probably also from this thread. You can be absolutely sure that background checks and other personal information has been gathered by them on all of the individuals whose names are associated with Maura's disappearance in that area, whether or not any of those individuals might be considered a "suspicious character" ... and this background information came from sources that can be accessed by the Internet among other methods.

Fourth Point: The statement that Maura was harmed by a serial killer who has done this at least twice before, is based on developed profiles of the MO's of serial killers, but it is most likely on the level of a "guess". For example, because Maura disappeared in such a short space of time and with no evidence of a struggle and has not been seen since, it can be presumed that a serial killer who has done this before would have the skills to bring such an abduction about with such speed. But that is not necessarily so ... it could have been a "wannabe" serial killer who just got lucky his first time. And because there are other potentially valid explanations for Maura's disappearance, the "serial killer" theory does not stand alone. If one were to try the "serial killer" choice in court, it would not be convicted because there is so much circumstantial evidence that several other theories are possible, that the "serial killer" one can't be claimed beyond a reasonable doubt.

These are just my opinions. Don't have a blog, so no one has to sign up to read 'em.

And you are qualified "how" to determine what is fantasy, wild speculation, etc.?
chickadee wrote:

Maura is still missing. What happened to her is the only mystery, and it won't end until what happened to her becomes known.
chickadee wrote:

That's just ridiculous. If local people are so touchy about some words from total strangers on a forum, why do they even have computers? A human sperm has to fight to get into the egg cell, why do people think the rest of life should be any different? If people want to help, they should just do it. Surely someone's life is a little bit more important than some hurt feelings?

I jump on trampolines, not chickadees. Please note that I'm not in any way attacking you personally, I simply don't agree with the ideas you've expressed and am telling you why.

Welcome, chickadee.

This board can be "overtaken" by a single-minded few only if it is allowed by those the few oppose. A little fratricide isn't going to hurt anyone. As Shack says, scroll on by - ignore them just as if they were an ad. Or if you really don't like what another poster says, fire back. Stick to your guns. Some posters here (not me, regretfully) have very polished diplomatic skills. Other posters were woefully misinformed a long time ago and made their minds up then. Others go which way the wind blows. Some posters are abrasive, some kind and courteous.

Personally, I wouldn't like it here if there weren't such a diversity, not only of opinion, but of personality. To me, it's people like Sophie and Shack and Euro who - although I don't much agree with them - give this forum the vitality it has. The alternative is a nice and polite little group of like-minded people with nice ideas and no fire.

It's not like this board is the ONLY place online that Maura's disappearance can be discussed. There are blogs and newsgroups and password-protected forums, too. And there should be, if there's an interest. This just happens to be only one of the several beauty salons in town. There's a barber shop across the street and another one around the corner.

I went to high school and college with bullies and cheerleaders and goody two-shoes and communists and libertarians and Democrats and Republicans and Wall St. pickpockets and street fighters and religious nut-cases and all kinds of people. And I wouldn't see that change for the world because it IS the world.

Everyone's welcome to read or not read. To me, this is like the bleachers in Fenway Park. There are a lot of people here I don't like. Which is good. If I want to be surrounded by people I like and who like me, I stay home. I always want a wide variety of people around me in order to keep me honest and on my toes. That doesn't happen anywhere else nearly as well as it does in a really (and sometimes wildly) democratic forum like this. If nothing else, some of us, in the end, learn tolerance and how to better behave ourselves. Others don't. Get out of it what you want to. And when you want to.

This place is Ellis Island, Mott Street, the bleachers in Fenway, Route 66. God bless a little chaos and a big mix of humanity.

Hello all,
Just checked out the web page of the University of Massachusetts Outing Club.
It seems that the UMOC does have its own cabin near Bethlehem, NH.
Has anybody seen this mentioned before?
Here is an excerpt from the UMOC web site.
Please, check out the pictures on the web site, which I was unable to transfer here:
UMOC Alumni Cabin
Cabin in Winter
Cabin Interior
UMOC's cabin is located in Bethlehem, New Hampshire (the poetry capital of New Hampshire). It is a rough construction about a quarter mile hike in from the parking lot on route 142 south of town. The first level has a kitchen with a propane powered stove and lamps, a large dining/activity area and a wood stove for heat. The second level is a large open area with mattresses on the floor, space for about 25 to sleep comfortably. There is no electricity. There is running water only during fall and spring. During the summer the well dries up. During the winter it's frozen over. There is a two-stall outhouse.
Our Cabin Chair People are:
Chris Ledoux
Erik Hjerpe

Newcomer's Weekend, September, 2003
UMOC CABIN PRIVATE WEEKEND RENTAL POLICY
The charge for use of the Cabin for a weekend is as follows:
Student groups $125
Non-student groups $200
The full amount is to be paid at the time you make your reservation.
Priorities for use of the UMOC cabin are:
1st priority: UMOC trips and UMOC members on a trip;
2nd priority: UMass students;
3rd priority: Faculty, alumni, other outing clubs, other folk.
The priority system applies up until THREE WEEKS before your reservation date. Before that date a reservation request for your reserved date from a higher priority group may preempt your reservation. If that occurs your deposit will of course be refunded. Three weeks and less before your reservation date your reservation is guaranteed.
Please note: Except as noted above, THIS PAYMENT IS NOT REFUNDABLE. Make sure your group understands this before you make a payment. Please make your payments by check, payable to UMass Outing Club.
UMOC will hold your group responsible for any damages to the cabin, its contents or its property caused by your group while the cabin is under your care.
THERE IS EXTREME FIRE DANGER AT THE CABIN.
We demand that you obey the following rules at all times:
NO smoking ANYWHERE in the cabin!
NO open fires, flames, carbide lamps, or candles, etc. of any kind in the loft.
Determine the locations of fire extinguishers when you arrive.
Turn all the building's gas mantle lamps off when you retire at night.
Make sure the gas stove and oven are turned off when you are finished cooking and when you retire at night.
Turn the gas line outside the cabin off when you leave.
The cabin can accomodate a maximum of 30 people at a time safely.
Please do not expect UMOC to be responsible for injuries sustained by members of your group while staying at the cabin. Do not chop wood. Plenty of dry, chopped wood is stored out in back of the cabin. In general, people in your group must take care of themselves; make sure everyone knows how to play safely and sanely in the woods. Also, UMOC cannot be responsible for losses to your group due to theft. Keep your vehicles locked.
YOU AND YOUR GROUP MUST READ THESE POLICIES CAREFULLY AND AGREE TO ABIDE BY THEM COMPLETELY.

Superficial, undeveloped thoughts about "agendas":

Posters here are often accused of having agendas. Like others have posted, this forum, as a free-thinking group could accomplish a lot. Who has an agenda?

someone wanting to just throw a wrench into the works for malicious enjoyment...

someone with involvement who wants to distract investors from him- or herself...

someone who just wants to inflict pain and not present ideas...

investigators who want to provoke us to test out posters for their reactions...

people who want to avoid anything that might reflect even a little bit negatively on Maura...

We have very few facts here. That explains the volume of scenarios tossed out.

There aren't that many posters who espouse one single point of view. I've seen most people cycle through the possibilities of foul play in NH, stalking in Amherst, Maura being depressed, Maura wanting to run away, Maura seeing something she shouldn't have, etc.

I worry about the stability of posters who need to personally attack for an idea that's been expressed. Those posters might be just a bit too involved, too invested in one possibility. The goal is resolution and a good model for a forum is a classic think-tank. I might go read up on how those function ---

I've never been well-adjusted and I certainly don't aspire to that boring state. And forget golf! Why golf when you can collect rocks, shells, bird feathers and spalted wood? Where are your priorities, man?

Just one more quick note on driving my old burner on 3 cylinders..."driving around town"..
so to speak..the few miles doing errands, is a drag because of the stopping and starting.
It is much more difficult and frustrating than an extended trip. If Maura's Saturn drove
like mine "around town"..I can understand her asking friends to take her here n there locally.
Elsewhere, you remembered Granny Grunt..! Does present a silly picture, doesn't it?
(a low speed chase)
On the subject of attacking another's thoughts, my Mom says "don't waste your saliva on those
who have a mind set".(This is an "in general" statement, not directed)
She also taught me to ignore the unkind, eventually they will have only themselves with whom to contend.

Just got here..to try to read..and can't recall who said what....as usual...but, I tend to think
the simplistic path..KISS method..not much into the Stephen King, Rod Serling (sp?) way
of thinking about Maura's disappearance. Also, gonna leave the "before Maura left" up to
the chap with the delightful accent....TaTa....

About think tanks, taken OUT OF CONTEXT for a forum, but strangely relevant IMO:

(Not attacking anyone since I see my own misperceptions very clearly in several lines here!)

pasted (snipped, and paraphrased) from <http://academic.regis.edu/volunteer/Ivan/sect... ;

A think tank is a process for looking long and deeply at underlying assumptions

Beyond "how" to "why"

Beyond "what" to "what if"

Need creative people who can entertain unconventional approaches to a problem which has resisted conventional solutions… people who are willing to re-examine basic assumptions

Everyone is both student and teacher, both seeker and "guru"

Group works within broad framework rather than the narrowly defined

From there, freedom to pursue possibilities wherever they may lead

"what if" thinking key processes

Unanimity is not

There is deep suspicion of the "obvious"

concentrate on getting beneath the surface to underlying assumptions and values

It’s OK to "get personal" in fact, it’s hard to remain robotic
do not rush to offer "solutions" until we understand more...

Some assumptions tend to limit the scope of thought and action; others expand it.

Conditions which cancel creativity are easier to identify, and one of these is getting too comfortable with grooved patterns in our thinking.

Be pervasively paranoid about "obvious" truths, especially those that are unconsciously taken for granted, by most people.

Logicians may like "either-or" but that doesn't mean the world works that way
