Last nights Posts, regarding why didn't Maura put on flashers....why didn't she go to the house with the Sheriff's car..(I didn't know that a Sheriff lived in one of those 4 houses within view of incident) caused me to ponder..then I thought I have been looking at this whole issue with an older person mind. I can't think as a youthful 21 yo girl anymore.
What I mean is, just because a young college student is intelligent and an athlete doesn't necessarily mean that they have sense. This is no way meant to be demeaning to her, or to her family. I am not putting any blame on Maura or
her family. It was written once by somebody that the only one who could have changed the scenario, would have been Maura. That sounded like blaming the victim to me. Maura was a victim....only because of her youth and perhaps amnesia...? In the first Forum, there were some youthful Posters. I wish more would write again with their
thoughts. Todays youth seems to be a bit more aware than I was in my innocent days of youth.
Again and still I think back to when I was under 21....grabbed with an arm around the waist..other hand over my mouth, and kneed in the rear end, head first into the back seat of car....took seconds...no sign of "foul play"...away I was driven, with 3 guys. When they dumped me out the car hours later, there was "sign of foul play"...but, I was alive.

Maura is gone......I wish nightmares on those who are not telling what they know about it. I still
believe in a conscience.

Hello all,

Reading the latest posts here I checked out the Google maps over Swiftwater with a mix of traditional maps and satellite pictures.

Just by looking at a map of the area it would seem to me that it would have been quite impossible for Maura to get a view of a house at the junction of Rt 112 and Swiftwater Circle from where her car was stranded.
Even if she were to have walked down to Weathered Barn itself, that house would probably have been invisible to her as far as I can make out from the aerial views of the area.
Remember, it was dark as well at the time.

Still, it would seem rather surprising that Maura did not go to the Westman house more or less across the road from her car if she felt scared or threatened in any way.

This makes me ponder the theory that Maura might have been in a "flight" mode due to being in a fugue state,
or that the young lady driver of the Saturn - as described by the SBD (Mr A)- was not, in fact, Maura, and was in a desperat hurry to get away from the car as soon as possible.

With the house of Mr & Mrs W so very close (and presumably rather well lit as well since the W´s were at home) it does seem strange that Maura wouldn´t have got herself over there under normal circumstances.
IMHO.

That depends on what exactly it was she was frightened of, or feeling threatened by. Terror can cause irrational responses in people, which is what makes it such an effective weapon.
This makes me ponder the theory that Maura might have been in a "flight" mode due to being in a fugue state,
...or even in a flight mode NOT necessarily in a fugue state.

It does seem pretty obvious, given the illustration of Maura's weekend, that these were anything BUT normal circumstances. Regardless of whether or not Maura was up there of her own volition.

Quija, I definately agree with you on this on. But, why would the claim of searching continue?
Sadly, maybe the only undiscovered evidence is where the perps ultimately left Maura?... does that make any sense? I don't know....

Hello all,

Some poster here recently mentioned a log cabin some 1/2-1 mile further east on Rt 112 from the Westhered Barn, which apparently burnt down some time ago.
Anybody here knows anything about this?
Has this been discussed here onboard before?

Also, returning to that mysterious red, possibly MA-reg truck as seen by witness RO, who mentioned that the rear window of the truck was quite a small one, which made her think of a rather old model.

I´ve been doing some web research on this and it certainly would seem that the pickup truck seen by RO most likely must have been a fairly ancient one, possibly a Chevrolet Apache C10 Stepside or similar not much younger than 1965.

A question for all of you onboard familiar with the NH-VT countryside:
Would this kind of almost "classic" pickup trucks still have been fairly common on the roads as late as 2004?
What do you say?
Thanks!

In the Summer of 06, while I was there, I met and talked with one of the men who was helping Fred. He told me that he was in the Barge Inn Restaurant in Woodsville, having lunch and overheard talk of a log cabin that had just burned down.(I don't know if this is the same log cabin on 112, or even when specifically it burned.)
He told me that it was a table of men....their voices/laughter were rising...he overheard the words " and he had just finished working on it" !...then followed more laughter...
The man was sickened by the talk and laughter
about some persons/families loss.

That's all I know....

This one wasn't new, if that's what they meant by "had just finished working on it" so I don't know if its the same one. Next time you're on 112 heading east from the Weathered barn, go about 2/4 to 1/2 mile --it's up on a small hill to the right but it's not far from the road. The burnt structure is still there.

There was an arsonist at loose at that time. I believe a newer structure on 116 heading to Easton was burned too.

Yeh, I do remember that burned structure....it had yellow tape around it...in fact there were photographs of it on the Maura site....don't recall where one would find 'em now. And, I was in the Warren Market when I heard
of a Meth lab bldg. on 116 being burned down.
I Posted about that. Was that a log cabin ...?
These are the times I sooo miss the Forum...to "search" back....aarrgh!

Hello Shack,
Just a question for you before saying goodbye for tonight:
Would you consider it "normal" NH behaviour (if such a concept exists?...) to act (or perhaps rather not to act) as Mr & Mrs W in their house at the Weathered Barn Curve in Swiftwater.
Depends on the people. I would be inclined to think that they would have at least tootled over to the car to make sure there were no injuries, or a fatal, you know -- unless they saw someone else pull up and "check" -- however, many people in these parts will not interfere unless asked. I've had to bang on some wild podunk doors for a phone/tow at midnight/1am in the dead of winter and have never felt unsafe -- but unless my accident made a lot of noise (has this been verified?) I wouldn't expect anyone to come looking for me.

Jeez, Shack. As a newbie, I didn't realize you had such a personal connection to this sort of incident. In my line of work I read a lot about this type of crime and I have to say, you, having survived, are in the minority. I cannot imagine what you have been through and automatically admire you for your strength.

I am female, 9 months older than Maura. I will try to answer your questions re: attitude of a twentysomething in these parts, but realize that I am more of a backwoods girl than she was, and used to driving these kind of roads in winter, in bad conditions, in cars just as if not more sketchy than hers.

In my opinion, if it is true that there was a
marked (i.e. obvious, which to me is a) unusual plates b) extra antennae c) mounted spotlight) sheriffs' car within eyesight, I would:

a)(if doing something illegal, and not in immediate danger) I would hightail it the hell out of the area.

b)(if pursued, felt threatened, in need of mechanical assistance, whether or not I was impaired) I would bang on that door like I was punching out a heavyweight champion.)

That said, I have a pal who was an EMT in Peacham VT at that time period. I'll pick his brain a bit.

YES.

Say the word "pickup" and it's common.

Also, ever since I can remember, temp VT plates are red on white just like MA permanents. Just a thought. Dunno how close the witness to the "MA" plates was.

A lot I don't know...

Northern Lights..what a breath of fresh air you are. First, let me tell you that my wardrobe is jeans. I am the daughter of 2 old Vermonters. Just because I live in MA, my heart and soul is still up there in the mountains. My father, son of a farmer decided he didn't want to be a farmer..he went to college, as did my Mom....and so "here I be". So glad that you wrote...I feel a young mind is sooo needed here.
It is late and I want to re-read your Posts. Thank you for reading and writing.

This is not unusual behavior at all. Very common seen over and over again.

Do me a favor and ask him this. Has he ever been to a crash where the driver has run from the scene? Ask him when the driver flees the scene of an accident what is the number one reason for them to do this, in his experience.

Hello NorthernLights,

I believe I said this before (when you last popped in here a little while ago), but I´ll say it again:

Very welcome onboard here and it´s really good to have some young person of Maura´s age to contribute their thought and ideas.

Regarding the "mystery" red truck seen by witness RO near/in Swiftwater village:

It has been said on this board and on the former MMM forum that the police pulled in red trucks for check-ups throughout the night of Maura´s disappearance.
If this is correct, there must have been a good reason for police to start such an operation in the area.

It would seem to me that the red truck observed by witness RO must have caught the attention of LE as well.
The question is how and why -
what are your thoughts, NorthernLights & all?

Now that I think of it, it may not have been a log cabin--it had a wooden exterior--maybe that 12" barnboard type.
