Military Time

Military time is an unambiguous, concise method of expressing time used by the military, emergency services (law enforcement, firefighting, paramedics), hospitals, and other entities. The following sections provide a detailed description of the difference between regular and military time, how military time is written, and several time conversion examples.
Regular versus Military Time

The main difference between regular and military time is how hours are expressed. Regular time uses numbers 1 to 12 to identify each of the 24 hours in a day. In military time, the hours are numbered from 00 to 23. Under this system, midnight is 00, 1 a.m. is 01, 1 p.m. is 13, and so on.

Regular and military time express minutes and seconds in exactly the same way. When converting from regular to military time and vice versa, the minutes and seconds do not change.

Regular time requires the use of a.m. and p.m. to clearly identify the time of day. Since military time uses a unique two-digit number to identify each of the 24 hours in a day, a.m. and p.m. are unnecessary.

WHAT ABOUT MILITARY MINUTES?
Regular and military time use the same number of minutes per hour and they use minutes in exactly the same way. Military minutes do not exist and there is is no need to convert minutes when going back and forth between the two time systems.

People occasionally encounter time written in a format that appears to use minutes larger than 59 (for example 7:82 or 7.82). Time written in this manner is being expressed in decimal hours (hours and hundredths of hours), not military time. Converting from decimal hours to hours and minutes is a different issue than converting between regular and military time.

ahahahahah, Shack you're too funnnny..........go to my room huh? Nope ;-)
Lady Gray, I'm at home now. I take the chart I found to mean if you have military time of....say,
7:55 pm, you would say it's 19.93
Until I learn otherwise, I really believe it's right. Back to Maura, we should find out the truth about military time so we can better understand the times put on the report.

FireCat I'm not sure where you heard that. 19:50:59 is one second shy of 1951hrs. The military still uses 60 seconds in a minute in its time. The only thing that uses hundredths that I am aware of is the splitting of seconds. They use hundredths of a second i.e. 19:59:23.43 It is rare to see that as a time except when actually timing things with electronic equipment and only then when there is actually a reason to do so.
Bill
I said it right, the splitting of hundredths of seconds. I just mistyped the numbers. I've got a pretty firm grasp on how this all works--I run marathons, and hundredths of seconds are crucial. Sorry I added to the confusion.

Regardless, NO ONE I know, including active duty marines, uses anything other than the regular sixty-minute hour to divide minutes. Which is the point I was trying to make to Paris.

Ok, I just did a quick google search, and there IS such a thing as time being divided into hundredths of a second, Paris, but the only people I can find who use it is the POST OFFICE.

It has to do with latitude and longitude and plotting:

"I think what you're talking about is a latitude/longitude and plotting using time as a function (degrees expressed in minutes and hours). Hours is straightforward. With the minutes it's taking the 60 minute rule (60 mins. per hour) and applying it to a base of 100."

HOWEVER, I think we can say WITH CERTAINTY that it is a fact that NHLE and HPD both used STANDARD MILITARY TIME in the police reports. Thus, the ambulance came at minutes before 8:00 PM.

Hopefully, this is the end of that discussion.

I have always wondered if they found pieces from the front bumper. That's clearly broken and missing in the pictures of Maura's car....that's what I was looking at this morning when I thought maybe they were using what I thought was military time.
I read that on the 12th they blocked the road there and gathered what they could. Does anyone know if fragments from the car were ever found there? I don't think I've ever read that.

Hello all,

I do realise that this is not going to be such a very popular theory with some of my esteemed fellow posters here...
Still, I think it´s vital to test all possible options without any preconceptions, so here goes:

Now, what if Maura did in fact have a secret boyfriend somewhere in the Amherst area?
What if this theoretical boyfriend was actually the driver of Maura´s (or rather her father´s) Saturn on the night that UMass student Petrit Vasi was hit by a hit-and-run driver in "downtown" Amherst?
What if the hit-and-run driver was in fact Maura´s secret boyfriend, perhaps driving in an inebriated state?
Perhaps it was he who made that upsetting phone call to the security desk at Melville dorm which reduced Maura to tears? Perhaps he called Maura´s cell phone while she was at the security desk?

Perhaps the damaged Saturn was hidden away at the secret boyfriend´s place somewhere in or near Amherst, which may be why nobody seems to have noticed a damaged Saturn parked on the UMass campus. Because it may not have been parked there in the first place.

Could it conceivably be that Maura was so utterly and totally infatuated with her secret boyfriend that she one way or another agreed to do away with the car by driving it north together with the secret boyfriend, perhaps being followed by a friend of the secret boyfriend in a back-up vehicle (the mysterious red truck seen by witness RO?) in case the Saturn happened to break down.

Perhaps the whole point with such a ruse might have been to fake Maura´s disappearance/"suicide " and disposing of the incriminating Saturn in one go?
Could this be the reason for that strange rag in the tailpipe of the Saturn?
Perhaps that´s also why the book "Not without Peril" was lying about in the car, symbolically marked on the page entitled "A matter of Life or Death"?
Was the secret boyfriend possibly smoking a cigarette in/by the Saturn at the Weathered Barn curve while being observed by Mrs W-man across the road?
Did he hide himself from view by crouching down in the back of the car when the SBD came along and spoke to Maura?
Was Maura´s hair down on purpose in order to make her look slightly different from her normal appearance? I have seen a picture of Maura with her hair down and she does look like quite another girl in that photo...
Could this be why the SBD was wavering in his statements regarding the appearance of the driver of the Saturn?

Yes, this is just one possible theory out of many, but I have to say that it would answer at least a few questions.
IMHO.

hi Ben and all with all due respect,if Maura was in the saturn on feb 09 04 she either took off or was grabbed.personally i am thinking the saturn was simply left there either due to time constraints or someone getting stuck in the snow.i dont believe someone tried to make it look like an acccident.i dont think the point of any forum is to find Maura by posting all the facts.it just cannot happen here.might as well post them on a tree on 112 and let anyone see them
I agree. If for some reason some reasonable body eliminated both the police - or SBD - then they have my opinion on the next step. But as far as I know - I agree with everything you say.

Converting AM/PM to 24 Hour Clock
For the first hour of the day (12 Midnight to 12:59 AM), subtract 12 Hours
Examples: 12 Midnight = 0:00, 12:35 AM = 0:35
From 1:00 AM to 12:59 PM, no change
Examples: 11:20 AM = 11:20, 12:30 PM = 12:30
From 1:00 PM to 11:59 PM, add 12 Hours
Examples: 4:45 PM = 16:45, 11:50 PM = 23:50

I think Paris is saying 12:00 plus 4/10 of an hour. I don't know if decimal points were used in the time.

Correct. We use a time clock at work and I do payroll. If it's 20:62 at shifts end and the person started at 12:30, It's as follows.
20:62 minus 12:50=(8.07 hrs worked)
But thanks everyone for being good sports.
Euro, still so hard to believe Maura hit Vasi, or that her Saturn was involved somehow. In order for any person to call Maura at the security desk, they would have had to be on Campus. That's not easy to do if you don't have a pass. The call was late. I don't know, someone could have been staying in her room, but who? I will go which ever way the conversation does.........
And now I'm stumped because of all the different stories. If Maura got in a car with a 'friend' 100 yards from SBD, because the dogs lost her scent there. But that blows the idea of her running 5 miles away. So what do you think about just this part?

This forum is really not that great. I just wrote one and poof.

I was saying that I agree with Euro to a great extent - that some "facts" showing up here are unique to this site - like the Saturn being absent. Even if it was seen that doesn't break your theory.

The rest is not addressed to Euro particularly - I'm just writing fast - I got to go.

My point is that Maura appears to have been disparate to drive the car to New Hampshire not a week later but that day. Risking driving a car she avoided on a long trip in snow - not waiting until a better car was hers - in fact not disparate to acquire a car before her dad left.

I hold that any theory that gives a reason for desperation on Maura's part could hold water. But it also needs to explain the Maura-look-alike in the car - this requires at least knowledge of who Maura was.

I believe that the other student accident was a fluke.

Cell calls can be traced to the tower it came from (google Fitzhugh). I think all calls were investigated - so either the contact was not over the phone or the contact was walk up - or not conspicuous to investigators.

Car damage scenario even requires helpers. Her making it after departure requires assistance realistically.

You put all of this together - and she appears to have been wisked off.(Unless you think cop or Atwood killed her.)

Love might be a motive - but most parents accept a child's decisions - no reason to believe otherwise from Maura's parents.

So - there comes the question - what would motivate a either Maura alone - or a group of people to wisk her off some where presumed to be dead?

And if you have an idea in mind - does it maje sense?

The stuff in the car was just normal daily needs and for safety sake she brings her expensive jewelry with her. She had her nursing books and one more that just happens to seem morbid or something to those not interested in that death in the mountains stuff. When you go away to college, you bring pictures and not really too many either. I can see using some for bookmarks or just keeping them in a book, period,~ to keep them flat.
They say her room looked packed up. Maybe she was going to leave for a bit and come back for her things. Maybe someone else was to go into her room while she was gone and take it out for her. Because of the 'accident' the stuff had to sit.
But she was back by 2 weeks, wasn't it? Things to add, put away, take this down, put that up, but then decides she just needs time away from all the stresses of being such a good student. I know a girl who threw up at the thought of not being perfect. Her stress level was very high because she wanted to be best at everything she did. Maybe Maura was getting to be that way. Just adding a sidebar to a different boyfriend idea. I don't know what kind of time Maura would have to fall in Love so quick but hey, I did and am still with him.

Actually, I was in Love with an army guy when I met my future husband. He was here and the other not, so I did what I did, only I was 17. 2 months into the marriage, I ran away to Georgia. I'm just relating to Maura now and trying to open my mind to a "someone else".
I really do doubt it though because of all the things I have read and been privy to. And Petrit like I say never heard peep for 2 years, the rumor that missing Maura broke down the night he was hit.
How could Petrit make those dents in the car? He'd have to have a mid evil helmit on with a spike.

There doesn't have to be a Maura look alike in line if it's a random stroke of luck for 2 people about to take a car or a person and move the car, what have you. The Saturn is seen driving at some point, ambushed somehow, taken from there and driven by the two (if two)
There was a man
There was the girl
Her hair was down, she didn't look the same
The Bolo was wrong at one point too, so that's what I think about a Maura look alike. Just being a female, in the dark may have been enough for these witnesses to say, think or feel it was Maura though they never really knew her, much less saw her in the light of day

If CW left work at 7:ish...I thought, what if he stopped off ..at....so his timing would be off
getting home ...even so, he either saw someone running or he didn't between 7 and 9:26 when
CS "cleared"....OR he went straight home and didn't see any activity. Which is it.?

With all the recent "time" yardi yardi..I have to "kiss" (keep it simple stupid) 1330 is always
gonna be 1:30....to me...after all.,.think about it..CS said to Sharon "some time between 7 and 7:30..that night"....huh..? etc...and, the DL is just that... hour/minutes...according to ...?. piffle....

TWIMC ..I did catch that program on E...re: CT River Valley, Ginsburg ...I had borrowed the
book from Beth...but, think I should read it again..

Whiston, perhaps I noticed a bit of despairing words?....I understand...and remember when this
started, as to how so many put up fliers....and they were constantly disappearing...torn down.

Again, and still...4 houses/homes...Westxxx...got sick and tired of ....SBD et al moved to FL..
JM...secret orange peeling ...I would hope that, at least, these 3 residences have written statements..
And CW....Franconia to Benton 15 miles..25 mins.(rte 116)then...112 approx 4 miles to Swiftwater.....non stop 1/2 hour easy....stop and have a few beers etc.....yardi yardi ...back in his neighborhood by 9 ish..... AND, if indeed, he saw a furtive walker/runner.....it had to be between 7:15 and 8:15ish...around the 112/116 junction...? From the incident site to 116 is about 4 miles.....easily traversed...? I dunno...
If this has been followed through properly there should be "many" witness reports.
RO would be especially interesting because 2/9/2004 she was a neighbor resident..but didn't
appear to the MM Forum until 2006. Also, SP Monaghan really had no (working) business in that
area, according to official report....(then he was transfered, afterwards within SP)
(He with his ESP about the impending situation of a Becket student.?)

Someone mentioned if any fragments of the Saturn were found... I do not KNOW if HPD and
NHSP searched the side of the road that day (too tired to hunt for date..within a week or so)
but, I do remember a guy friend of the Murray family was searching the side of the road with a
metal detector when he was "dissuaded" by local HPD.

Euro, as was just mentioned, the upsetting phone call would not have been on Maura's phone, or else there would be a record of who it was.

Hello FireCat,

Thanks for that information.

Even so, Maura may well have kept another cellphone, which she may have used for communicating with a chosen few people.
Such an extra cellphone may not even necessarily have been listed in her own name.

I would say that if she did in fact have a "secret" boyfriend in Amherst, such an arrangement would probably have been made.

Hello....

What does it matter about this military time. Time is time afterall. It is now 10:24 am or 10:24 hrs. At noon it will be 1200 and at 1:47 pm it is 13:47 hrs. Maura is still missing and you are worried about regular time or military time.

Blah blah blah
