Everyone mentions backing his bus into his driveway. Why is that so unusual? Did he have room to turn the bus around on his property?

I apologize if these are redundant questions taht may have been previously answered. I don't find that unusual especially during winter months up north. We always backed our cars in especially if a snow storm was coming.

As far as background checks sure there are some who fall through the cracks but the percentage is minimal (not that there is such a thing where children are concerened).

The neighbor thought it was unusual for his neighbor, SBD, to back his bus in. He thought it was 'odd'. And he just sat on his bus doing paperwork and waiting for responding officer to find him there This is not something the neighbor ever noticed before

Exactly so. A bus driver would not want to back a vehicle like that out onto a highway. Most people in the area could verify his usual practice.

The slim chance that SBD had a prior offense cannot be used to justify focusing on an unlikely scenario at the expense of a more promising one.

The same family that owns the school bus company (not the local one, but up the corporate ladder a ways) also owns a large number of ambulance companies. Perhaps this has something to do with the Red Cross call.

Where was Monahan in all of this? How does he figure in?

The times I have been by his house the bus was backed in. I didn't go by every day but it was common for me to travel that route 3-4 times a week.
His driveway is practically on a blind curve. Anyone coming from the Lincoln direction and heading to Woodsville can not see Bradley Hill RD or the SBD's driveway until they are almost on it.
It would be quite stupid to back a large bus into a road on a blind curve.

I'm sure his background was checked out thoroughly.
Not only did he drive a school bus but he also taught NH Hunter Safety Course to many of the area children.
I've never heard a bad word about him until I started reading a certain site.
I hesitate to say this for fear that I will be accused of trying take the focus off of him but I will say it anyway. I think a lot of time and energy has been wasted by blaming this man for having any part in the disappearance of Maura.

The following speculation is not based on information known to factual, but is close to what I feel to be true.
IMHO the SBD is not responsible in any way at all for the disappearance of Maura. The accident was not staged. SBD came across the accident and Maura didn't accept his help because of his intimidating size and odd facial hair. SBD proceeded to his driveway and backed in. He could've done this because of winter conditions, but I suspect it was to keep a watchful eye on Maura and her car until the police arrived on the scene. An individual known to SBD arrived on scene and offered Maura help. SBD recognized this individual and is considered dangerous. Maura accepts a lift and they continue west toward the Stage Stop store/gas station. SBD and CS follow in the same direction SBD turns at French Pond Road, an area where SBD knows this dangerous 'samaritan' lives or associates with others. With an unsuccessful search SBD returns home. Eventually, realizing he may have been seen by the suspect at the crash site , he fears harm or death may come to his family or himself and relocates to Florida.

As a former OHRV certified safety instructor in NH I can attest to the thorough background check as well. I may even know this person we often ran both courses together up north.( Now watch OH MY jump back saying I'm somehow involved again...lol )

I live here too and you are exactly right, it would be stupid to back out on that corner. Claysoup sounds like someone with grandiose ideas of what the scenario actually was.

The SBD hadn't backed in before according to that neighbor and he assumed SBD was calling police from there, because he sat there for so long. The SBD and his x wife who lived there too, BOTH drove school buses. And yes you can turn around there. After that date in 04, SBD would back in most of the time. Saturnus, I agree that SBD may have seen a person there and is afraid of admitting that. We were told there was one unmarked unofficial car there so who knows...I could understand so much more if only the police had been honest from the start.
