The information about the "hockey bag of beer" or "bag of cans" as you call it here showed up suddenly last summer. I don't even remember where it originated or where it was first discussed. All I know is that suddenly people were discussing a "hockey bag of beer." Can anyone actually confirm the origin of this information as fact? It was shortly after the series on Maura came out, and then the article that states LE tried repeatedly to contact Fred (which he denies multiple messages on his machine).

Anyone? Is this anything more than a random rumour that surfaced around this time? I remember asking that then, too, and don't remember if anyone was ever able to answer me then.

It’s unlikely. Maura wasn't "in" the military. She has no obligation unless she got her degree and received a commission which she didn't.

So this misinterpretation or misinformation (when you get that link Philip I'll be able to refresh my memory on the actual sentence!) could be a number of things. It could be confusing grammar, it could be a reporter not taking clear notes or not being able to translate them correctly later, it could be an editor messing up. I'm not saying any of these things were conscious--just that mistakes and errors are natural and human, and this one may be causing a train of thought that is misleading.

Thanks. I knew she had no obligation through USMA, but didn't know if she might have opted for something to help with school loans. Or maybe she still wanted to be in the military, but in a different capacity.

From the archives of the Caledonian-Record:

Potential Evidence Discounted
Maura Murray's friends and relatives were breathing a bit easier Tuesday after learning underwear found off a road in the town of Haverhill did not belong to her.

Murray, a 21-year-old nursing student at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, turned up missing the evening of Feb. 9 after she was involved in a one-car accident on Route 112 in Haverhill. The accident scene was about one mile east of Swiftwater.

"The DNA (tests) came back yesterday ... negative," Sharon Rausch said. "We are very glad. We are very hopeful."

Rausch is the mother of Billie Rausch, Murray's fiance-to-be.

Murray's sister, Kathleen, found a white pair of underpants lying on top of the snow on a secluded trail off of French Pond Road Feb. 26.

Kathleen turned them over to the Haverhill Police Department who in turn handed it over to the New Hampshire State Police.

Maura's hair brush and a toothbrush were provided to the state police crime lab in Concord along with the underwear for testing.

Although it turns out the underwear did not belong to Murray, and that provides a glimmer of hope, Rausch said the family is also realistic. "None of us believe she is willfully in hiding," she said. "But we are hopeful."

I will repeat the pertinent info for further clarity and emphasis: Maura's hair brush and a toothbrush were provided to the state police crime lab in Concord along with the [found] underwear for testing.

So Maura's toothbrush and hair brush were NOT provided for DNA analysis against an air bag.

The question, by the way, White Wash, continues to remain unanswered. Did DNA evidence on the airbag prove that Maura was in the Saturn when the airbags deployed? Which seat was she occupying, as there are two airbags in a Saturn?

Maybe not when the article was written, but the toothbrush and hair brush were, and presumably still are, available to help with all kinds of DNA analysis.

DNA testing of airbags in a case like this seems to be pretty routine, so the police probably know the identity of the person who was sitting in front of one or both airbags when they deployed. Although the bags may have popped with no one in the seat(s), given the airbag/sensor technology used in that year of Saturn. But LE would not necessarily know, as was pointed out, WHERE the airbags deployed.

That's why examining the bottom of the car for yellow paint is important.

Hey Philip--you mean this article?:-D I found it on the ustice for Chandra website.
Family Members, Fiance Seek Help In Finding Woman
BY GARY E. LINDSLEY, Staff Writer
Friday February 13, 2004
BETHLEHEM NEW HAMPSHIRE
Fred Murray has issued a plea to his 21-year-old daughter to contact him so they can work together on straightening out what is troubling her.
Murray met with reporters in Bethlehem Thursday night after he and family members scoured parts of New Hampshire from Haverhill to Conway and Bethlehem for his daughter, Maura.
"Maura, this is me ... like always, we will solve this," he said in a plea to his daughter through the media.
Maura, who is 5 feet, 7 inches tall and weighs about 120 pounds, was involved in a one-car accident on Wild Ammonoosuc Road about 7 p.m. Monday night.
When officers arrived at the scene, they found an abandoned black 1996 Saturn bearing Massachusetts plates.
Police determined the car belonged to Maura Murray and searched the area, but were unable to turn up anything.
Witnesses who saw the accident told police they had seen a lone woman. They also said it didn't appear the woman had been injured in the accident. When they asked if she needed help or the police, she reportedly said, "No." She left the scene before police and EMS arrived.
Police said Maura may be suicidal and headed toward the Kancamagus Highway area.
Fred Murray said he doesn't understand what prompted his daughter to leave the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, where she is a nursing student, to drive to New Hampshire.
He said it's very unusual for her just to take off. He said he had seen her Sunday afternoon and didn't suspect anything was wrong.
"I don't know exactly what you think is the matter," Murray said, again pleading to his daughter. "It isn't anything that can't be easily solved."
Murray did say Maura was upset about something that had happened over the weekend. He also said whatever it was wasn't a big deal.
Shivering in a light coat as he spoke about his daughter, Murray said he didn't know she was missing until another one of his children, Kathleen, called him Tuesday from Maura's apartment.
Haverhill police officers, he said, had called Maura's home. He made the trip to Haverhill, N.H., in the middle of the night.
Joining Murray in speaking with reporters in Bethlehem Thursday night was Bill Rausch, who is a second lieutenant with C Battery, 119th Field Artillery at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.
Rausch said he flew out first thing Wednesday morning. When asked how he is connected to Maura, he said, "Well, her father didn't know this, but we are engaged to be engaged."
Rausch said they have been dating for several years. He also said he had spoken to Maura Sunday and as recently as Monday morning. She did not seem to be upset about anything when he spoke to her. "Everything seemed fine," he said.
While he was at the airport waiting to catch a flight out of Oklahoma, Rausch said he received a call on his cell phone in which all he heard was someone breathing. The call, he said, was traced to a calling card.
"We have talked to the chief," he said, referring to Haverhill Police Chief Jeffery Williams, "and he said they have no leads. They have stopped the search."
That bothers both Murray and Rausch. They have been told police are waiting for another lead. "Our concern," Murray said, "is getting the word out from one police department to another police department. In the meantime, we are trying to spread the word."

It is known that her hair brush was requested for DNA.

What other samples are you referring to?

It is known that the air bags were cut out of the vehicle. The assumption, and I say assumption because the family was not informed of the purpose, the assumption is that they were cut out for that purpose; however........the family has not been informed of any DNA matches.

You are saying that there is a DNA match from the air bags to Maura?

Why are you privy to this and the family hasn't been informed?

Here's PART 2 of that article:
And that doesn't mean just law enforcement agencies in New Hampshire. They both believe Vermont and New Hampshire police agencies should be working together on this.
"That community lies right on the border," he said, referring to Haverhill. "Vermont could be helping out."
When Murray was asked why Maura had driven up to New Hampshire and may be headed toward the Kancamagus Highway area, he said the family had been visiting the area for several years to camp. "It's very familiar," he said.
Rausch and Murray spent Wednesday and Thursday handing out dozens of flyers with a picture of Maura and information describing her.
They are asking anyone who has seen Maura to contact the New Hampshire State Police at six ought three-846-three three three three or six ought three-two seven one-1170. People can also call the Haverhill Police Department at six ought three-787-two two two two.
Rausch and family members plan to extend their search into Vermont Friday

Now I remember how annoying that can be for those of you who routinely post long things and have them devoured.

In the meantime, here's the link to where I found the article. The Caledonian Record search function is being wonky at me, so I just googled the thing.

Hi Lady Gray,
I know you are not questioning the phrase but 'telling someone where the dog is buried' is a saying that is as old as dirt. It means the same as telling someone to go hell, go screw yourself, eat you know what and die, etc, etc.
Interestingly, I've yet to meet a dog I didn't genuinely like but I can't say that about people, especially a few on this forum.
When I began posting on this forum Alden called me Elsie and I let him know that I didn't appreciate the endearment, I didn't like him, and I didn't trust him. That's what I was referencing in that particular post you were quoting.
Maybe this is purely my opinion but I deemed the below paragraph a verbal attack against Helena considering she was the moderator of MMM. A lot was being said about MMM by Alden and others that was not kind and I openly told Helena how sorry I was while the MMM forum was still up and running. She replied by letting me know she appreciated how I felt.
The particular post below was one that I couldn't help but take personally as well.
Like I said, I've yet to meet a dog I didn't genuinely like. Can't say that for people though.
"It is well known that many people who might have information about a crime hesitate to go to the police. However, they often will develop confidence in coming forward by viewing and testing the tone and conduct of a forum like the MMM board. There is no other board on the internet officially endorsed and operated by the Murray family. The MMM board occupies a unique position in the flow of public discourse and therefore assumes a public responsibility.
Because the MMM board and the Murray family’s private investigator, Frank Kelly, are so inter-related and virtually indistinguishable to the public, his recent post on the MMM board (“and I have gun”) can be viewed as an attempt to intimidate the general public and therefore to disrupt the normal flow of assistance from the public to law enforcement.
The MMM board does not appear to be merely lazy, uninformed, unorganized, or intolerant. Its behavior in discouraging public discourse appears to have been sufficiently concerted and uniform over such a length of time that a reasonable case can be made that they are trying to interfere with an official investigation by law enforcement.
If the MMM board, masquerading as a public forum, actually represents a true attempt to undermine or discourage the genuine assistance normally provided by the public to law enforcement, then those responsible for maintaining the site, including its moderators, come dangerously close to obstructing justice.
The New Hampshire Attorney General should review the MMM board’s public postings and private message archives in order to determine whether or not their conduct is either illegal or meets the standard for a civil action.
If the Murray family’s private investigators have, for past three years now, relentlessly harassed and interfered with, for no good reason, the private life of an utterly innocent individual, if they have engaged in “covert alteration” of his environment, if they have sacked his business, if they have spread the most malicious and false rumors imaginable about him, then there can be no complaint about any scrutiny given the MMM discussion board."
Thank you. I knew there was something I was missing. I appreciate this post. This board is absolutely incredulous. I sit here and think why do I find myself actually in the position of responding to these posts? I do so because I want to protect whatever integrity there is on the case of Maura Murray.

That's what it says. However, Lady Grey has corrected this and stated that the call was actually from KATHLEEN'S apartment. Now, one can trust someone who knows Kathleen and has presumably spoken to her about this multiple times, even though one may not like Lady Grey personally, or we may trust a news article that by the time it gets published is about third- or fourth-hand information, and the author of whom does not know the Murrays personally.

For me, I'm going with the SIMPLEST EXPLANATION, which was that this was an error in reportage, which happens all the time, even with reputable media sources.

Yes, they WOULD know that, if they performed tests on them. Which still hasn't been confirmed here.

Yellow paint is not the only thing they should be searching for.....but I'm curious....do you mean school bus yellow?
