JO - the end...
Haverhill Police Department received a call at 8:40 p.m. from UM campus security to report Maura Murray's belongings were all packed in her dorm room. Campus security had evidencce that she was last seen Sunday morning by a fellow student and that she was carrying a backpack, box of wine and a large hockey bag of beer. Fish and game informed the HPD at 9 p.m. that if the driver was not located by the morning of Feb 11, they would begin a search at daylight.
The next day on Feb 11, fish and game officers, state police, local police, along with family and friends of Maura Murray began one of the first of many searches at the Wild Ammonoosuc Road accident site.
Williams said he contacted the FBI early on and he, the FBI, New Hampshire State Police and UM campus security all met in Keene to confer about the investigation.
After four years of searches and heartache, no answers have been found. It is heart-wrenching for family members, friends and the community where the accident occurred that Maura's whereabouts are not known.
Still, the investigation continues and it will remain open until Maura Murray is found. Scarinza said that there is still the possibility that someday this could possibly become a criminal case.
"If that is where the evidence leads us," he said. "There has been such a push by some to have the case become open to the public. This would totally jeopardize any good investigation done by all agencies involved and who, in reality, would that serve justice to? Certainly not Miss Maura Murray." If you have any information about Maura Murray or the night of the accident, please contact NHSP Troop F at xxxxxxx or the Haverhill Police Department at XXXXXXX

Thank you for posting this Browsing. It certainly is an eye opener.
It seems that the the police and the people that live where the accident happened were not negligent or uncaring at all and did everything they could to find her that night.
I see many differences between what is stated in this article and what has been said by some on this forum. And someone is not telling the truth about the phone calls made to Fred. It sure sounds like CS did everything he possibly could to get ahold of Fred that night and the next day.

Part 1

"evidencce that she was last seen Sunday morning by a fellow student and that she was carrying a backpack, box of wine..."
The key word in this sentence is: box of wine. That would be _after_ she went to the liquor store. But every report I have read shows her to have gone to that liquor store on Monday in the _afternoon_ not in the _morning_.
Wikipedia:
"Monday, February 9, 2004
4:00 PM or earlier - Maura purchases $35-$40 in alcohol while still in Amherst, Massachusetts. Video surveillance footage shows her to be alone."
I don't recall a conflict of information with Wikipedia in the Hanson Express.
I mention this not just because its a conflict - but a _material_ conflict - that is if we ignore Mr. Atwood's testimony that he saw someone that at least looked like Maura. But if he only saw a woman - or wasn't sure - another woman could have driven the car all the way - using side roads to avoid traffic - driving fast and recklessly - to "get out of Dodge."

Part 2

If the ATM visit was a _Sunday_ visit and not a _Monday_ Visit and if the following:
"Monday, February 9, 2004 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM - A dorm mate reportedly sees Maura leave the UMass Amherst campus."
Really should read Monday morning - then - perhaps the other sightings were Sunday and not Monday events:
So the timeline can be rearranged as such:
"Sunday, February 8, 2004
* 2:30 AM - Maura leaves her friend's dorm and heads to her father's hotel room.
* 3:30 AM - Maura hits a guardrail while driving her father's Corolla on Route 9 in Hadley. No charges are filed by the police. Damages total $8,000. Her father observes that she is shaken up and apologetic.[2]
* 4:49 AM - Maura calls her boyfriend, who is stationed in Oklahoma, from her father's cell phone.
* Time unknown - Fred makes some telephone calls and informs Maura that his auto insurance should cover the damages.
* Time unknown - Fred rents a car. Fred says he dropped Maura off at UMass, and headed to Connecticut for work.
* 3:30 PM - 4:30 PM - A dorm mate reportedly sees Maura leave the UMass Amherst campus. she was carrying a backpack, box of wine..
* 4:00 PM or earlier - Maura goes to an ATM and withdraws $280 from her account. Video surveillance footage shows her to be alone. Her bank account is left nearly empty. She is due to receive paychecks from her job in the coming days.
* 4:00 PM or earlier - Maura purchases $35-$40 in alcohol while still in Amherst, Massachusetts. Video surveillance footage shows her to be alone.
* 8:30 PM - Someone thought to be Maura checks her cellphone voice messages, most likely via her cellphone.
* 11:26 PM - Fred says he talked to Maura and Maura agreed to get the necessary forms pertaining to the accident from the registry on Monday. He says they agree to discuss the forms via telephone Monday night.
* Time unknown - Someone thought to be Maura searches for directions to Burlington, Vermont.(From New Hampshire State Police Troop F Commander Lt. John Scarinza's inspection of Maura's computer hard drive).
* Time unknown - Someone thought to be Maura searches for information on the Berkshires.(Source unknown).
Monday, February 9, 2004
* 12:55 PM - Someone claiming to be Maura calls for information about a condominium in Bartlett, New Hampshire that her family is familiar with. The call lasts for three minutes. No condominium is rented.
* 1:00 PM - Someone claiming to be Maura sends her boyfriend an e-mail, briefly stating she hasn't felt like talking to anyone, but that she will call him later in the day.
* 1:13 PM - Maura calls another student and leaves a voicemail. No significant information.
* 2:05 PM - Someone thought to be Maura calls 800-GOSTOWE for approximately 5 minutes. Later research shows this number was out of order on this day and that only recordings were available for listening.
* 2:18 PM - Someone thought to be Maura calls her boyfriend for approximately 1 minute. No conversation.
* 4:00 PM or earlier - Someone thought to be Maura e-mails one of her bosses and some of her teachers to inform them that there has been a death in her family and that she would be out of town for several days. There is no death in her family."
All of her actions were unseen or heard by anybody but Fred Murray.
Arguably Fred would have access to her dorm to do the searches and make the phone calls, in which no one would talk to the caller.

Wowzer, if you read that article and then read several other articles in various other papers, you will see many, many discrepancies among them.

That's one of the things that I find quite disturbing--is that there are such wildly varying accounts of the days after Maura disappeared. This one in particular is markedly different from the bulk of the others. For what that's worth--and I realize that coming from me, to you, is not much. Nevertheless.

Browsing, thanks for posting that.

Actually, Ben, I wonder--was the wine on the same liquor store receipt as the other alcohol?

And I'm still entirely unconvinced that Maura was ever seen carrying a hockey bag full of beer. This is the first and only time that information has ever been stated--why is that, do you suppose?

Agreed, fully.

The problem is in Massachusetts, not in New Hampshire. For what it's worth, I have often been proud to be a son of Massachusetts. But certainly not in this case. I am acutely embarrassed and outraged by the behavior of my neighbors and even some of our public servants. I can only throw a small wrench into the gears of this nasty witch hunt in order to expose it for what it really is. A young person's tragic disappearance should never have degenerated into an us versus them issue.

I know I have zero authority or standing to apologize to the people of Haverhill and of New Hampshire for the behavior of my neighbors. It's probably absurd and foolish to try, but I feel compelled to offer a humble apology nonetheless. I am very, very sorry. I am disgusted that the fellow citizens of my state could behave so badly to people - to fellow Americans - whom they have never known or even care to know.

See you again, my friend.

Firecat I know some of the things in this article are true. I also know that the people did more than you know trying to find her and then were trash talked for over 4 years.
How do I know this for a fact? Because I was one of the ones that searched the sides of the roads for any footprints in the snow for several miles in several directions when I learned a girl was missing. Why do you think I've been so defensive of the people and area here?
When someone walks into the woods they may not leave noticeable footprints on the road or side of road but they surely leave tracks going into the woods. Unfortunately I never found any tracks but I never stopped looking either. Even now when we drive the roads my eyes search the woods for any sign. Just habit now I guess.

I appreciate your words very much though.

Where do you suppose that information came from then?

Are you suggesting that the author just made it up, out of the blue?

Well Get Real - that Sunday thing looks like an error - I don't know what to believe or rely upon any facts at all.

But you can see how a difference of confusing 1 day could change the evidence so much that outrageous - unbelievable and undeniably false conclusions can be drawn.

NO I DON'T THINK FRED DID IT.

Truth is we don't have an exact accounting about police times. But you see a conflict in a minute or two - all of a sudden - you wonder if Grafton County has its own "Dexter" - I DON'T THINK THAT EITHER.

I ALSO DON'T THINK ANYONE IS JUSTIFIED IN BEING AN ARNCHAIR CRITIC OF THE POLICE.

THINK OF HOW IT FET WHEN YOU READ SOMETHING THAT LOOKED LEGIT BUT WAS COMPLETELY AGAINST THE TRUTH YOU KNEW.

REMEMBER THAT BEFORE YOU START MAKING PREJUDICED STATEMENTS ABOUT A GROUP OF PEOPLE.

There is an abundance of things to learn about Maura Murray's disappearance, but you're too damn smart for that. You're too damn busy stirring the pot and you know it. That's the only reason you are here at all.
You'd rather plump up your brainy pride and sarcasm than humble yourself enough to find out what happened to Maura. You'd rather discredit than contribute.

Harry might know what he's talking about. Corruption is everywhere, but perhaps he's had some firsthand experience in MA.

I wouldn't be so hard...cruel, in fact...on him about the situation regarding his wife. Sometimes victims come across as the crazy ones, when in fact, they are telling the truth.

Everyone's been so "sold" on the idea that NH authorities are corrupt...hmmm. Perhaps not.

Anything is possible in the disappearance of Maura Murray.

The bottom line is that New Hampshire State Police, the Governor, and the Attorney General refused the aid of the F.B.I and this is a poor refection on the state of New Hampshire.

Time and time again I have asked myself, "Why wouldn't they want all of the help and resources they can get?", and told myself, "At least it would apppear that the state of NH was doing everything humanly possible to find Maura and bring the perpertrator(s) to justice".
