Former Amherst man says he will plead guilty to importing steroids from China
by The Republican Newsroom

SPRINGFIELD - Four years after the death of a man led authorities to a stash of steroids in an Amherst apartment, a Western Massachusetts resident has announced that he will plead guilty to importing the drugs from China and selling them here.

Ryan Shooltz, 25, plans to plead guilty in U.S. District Court on Oct. 30 to distribution of anabolic steroids and human growth hormone. He was scheduled to go to trial earlier this week, but said during a court hearing on Tuesday that he intends to change his plea.

Court records show that Amherst police stumbled upon hallucinogenic mushrooms, thousands of steroid pills, and 335 vials of growth hormone when they were called on Sept. 10, 2004, to an apartment at 83 Summer St. where Shooltz was living.

He and his roommates called police when a friend, Raymond Anderton (age and hometown unknown), was found unresponsive after a night of drinking and take-out food. Anderton was later found to have died of an unrelated methadone overdose, according to court records.

Amherst police said that another resident, Thomas Brigham, invited police to look around the house for clues as to what led to Anderton's condition. However, they spotted hallucinogenic mushrooms drying on a fan in Kevin Shooltz's room, and came back later with a search warrant.

Thomas Lesser, a defense lawyer for Ryan Shooltz, tried to get the fruits of the search suppressed, arguing that the initial perusal of the house was unconstitutional because police did not have a warrant.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Kevin O'Regan countered that Brigham invited police to go through the house, and that the drugs were not particularly hidden.

"Mushrooms could be seen from the hallway outside Kevin Shooltz's room, and his mushroom-growing operation could be seen by anybody who walked through his doorway," O'Regan wrote in his opposition brief. "Ryan Shooltz's illegal human-growth hormone was in the refrigerator for anyone to see who opened the lettuce crisper."

The indictment states that Ryan Shooltz ordered the drugs over the Internet from China.

He will probably not face jail time at sentencing. The quantity of steroids police found in his home is not enough to trigger more than a six-month maximum prison sentence under federal guidelines.

Kevin Shooltz, his brother and roommate, was not charged criminally.

Lesser declined to comment after a brief court proceeding.

A spokesman for the Drug Enforcement Administration said that steroid distribution is widespread.

"Especially vulnerable are the young," said Anthony Pettigrew of the Boston DEA office.

He said that a 2005 study reported that 1.7 percent of eighth-graders, 2 percent of 10th-graders, and 2.6 percent of high school seniors reported using steroids at least once.

"These same students self-report that obtaining steroids is relatively easy for them," he said.

It's about the illegal use and distribution of performance enhancing drugs, nutritional supplements, steroids, etc.

It has been my experience that the people in small towns know everyone's business and anything that occurs will be talked about and spread like wildfire.

Except for Oh My's rantings there has been nothing. I do not believe that anyone in the immediate area was responsible for Maura missing. I would be known! mho. OR, some people can keep it to themselves, which is somewhat hard to believe.

How do I know this for a fact? Because I was one of the ones that searched the sides of the roads for any footprints in the snow for several miles in several directions when I learned a girl was missing. Why do you think I've been so defensive of the people and area here?
When someone walks into the woods they may not leave noticeable footprints on the road or side of road but they surely leave tracks going into the woods. Unfortunately I never found any tracks but I never stopped looking either. Even now when we drive the roads my eyes search the woods

Wowzer, Sorry, I became distracted when I read this post. A bit late I know but I wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU for searching and caring.

I'm sorry, I had thought that was clear when I said "plastic." Driver's licenses and school IDs are made of plastic and/or laminated in plastic.
No, you weren't clear. I thought plastic was a reference to credit cards. That is usually what I understand the “plastic” reference to mean.

Thanks for clarifying that.

Harry, give me some help here. Is it your contention that Maura was using steroids and was suffering from 'roid rage and ran away or that someone at the school suffering 'roid rage did something to Maura?

Not trying to be a wise guy just trying to connect the dots?

Chinamerica Fund and China Biotics.

These products end up in Amherst, among many other places, because of college athletics.

I was referring to both. The paper stuff (money) goes around the plastic stuff (credit/debit cards and IDs). ;-)

I believe Maura Murray disappeared because of one or more incidents related to the use of, and probably the sale of, performance enhancing drugs and/or a wide variety of quacky concoctions frequently used by athletes and people with serious illnesses. At least one of these "cocktails" was "developed" by an educator associated with UMass.

A search, albeit a tedious one, through public records will help establish this.

The EXACT location of the Corolla crash needs to be determined because it may - may - be more important than previously thought.

Maura Murray may have died as the result of her having used certain supplement(s) or other kinds of drugs (not including the usual street drugs such as marijuana, cocaine, heroin, etc.). This may have led someone to quietly dispose of her body and abandon her car in Haverhill (where it would be found and distract investigators).

She may have been killed by someone going through steroid withdrawal.

She may have been directly or indirectly associated with a network of people who distributed anabolic steroids or other illegal performance enhancing drugs and have been viewed as a liability for whatever reason.

I think that one way or another this world of drug use by athletes and seriously ill people (among other users) is at the root of her disappearance. And it may well be related to the Vasi hit. Roid/Road Rage is definitely not out of the question.

I believe there has been an organized effort to conceal this entire... issue. I believe that at least one Franklin County police officer has been used to keep a lid on it.

If Maura did not skip town in order to avoid a legal issue involving the Vasi hit, then I think it's likely she was abducted between more or less the center of Amherst and the intersection of Damon Rd. and King St. in Northampton.

Hello gvmeabrk & all,

Interesting that you mention this. I believe the poster originally mentioned the name "Hobart" or "Hubbard" without any particular designation.
There is of course the notorious Hobart Street in northern Amherst and also, if I remember correctly from my Google Map studies, a Hobart Pond Road (or similar name) in West Thornton, NH, a place specifically mentioned in connection with Maura on the web site "Brian´s Predictions".
Possibly just a strange co-incidence, but still...

Hello again,

Just a correction here:

There is a "Hubbard Pond Road" leading west into the wilderness out of West Thornton, NH.
Just re-checked the Google Maps again....

So whatever happened to Maura could have happened between Amherst, MA,through VT to Rte 112 Woodsville, NH
Somehow, somewhere Maura was separated from the car. Somehow her car was transfered and found with a female on 112.

The very last line in the "Editorial" is also disheartening.

"But litigation has also posed distractive and in some ways diminished attention to the search for Maura"....

JO - the end...
Haverhill Police Department received a call at 8:40 p.m. from UM campus security to report Maura Murray's belongings were all packed in her dorm room. Campus security had evidencce that she was last seen Sunday morning by a fellow student and that she was carrying a backpack, box of wine and a large hockey bag of beer. Fish and game informed the HPD at 9 p.m. that if the driver was not located by the morning of Feb 11, they would begin a search at daylight.
The next day on Feb 11, fish and game officers, state police, local police, along with family and friends of Maura Murray began one of the first of many searches at the Wild Ammonoosuc Road accident site.
Williams said he contacted the FBI early on and he, the FBI, New Hampshire State Police and UM campus security all met in Keene to confer about the investigation.
After four years of searches and heartache, no answers have been found. It is heart-wrenching for family members, friends and the community where the accident occurred that Maura's whereabouts are not known.
Still, the investigation continues and it will remain open until Maura Murray is found. Scarinza said that there is still the possibility that someday this could possibly become a criminal case.
"If that is where the evidence leads us," he said. "There has been such a push by some to have the case become open to the public. This would totally jeopardize any good investigation done by all agencies involved and who, in reality, would that serve justice to? Certainly not Miss Maura Murray." If you have any information about Maura Murray or the night of the accident, please contact NHSP Troop F at xxxxxxx or the Haverhill Police Department at XXXXXXX
Mauras was with her father Sunday morning at his motel room.

Thank you for posting this Browsing. It certainly is an eye opener.
It seems that the the police and the people that live where the accident happened were not negligent or uncaring at all and did everything they could to find her that night.
I see many differences between what is stated in this article and what has been said by some on this forum. And someone is not telling the truth about the phone calls made to Fred. It sure sounds like CS did everything he possibly could to get ahold of Fred that night and the next day.
The tangled webs we weave.....
Wowzer our family has never said the people that live in the area are negligent or uncaring. We have said the complete oppossite. There have been not only those in the area of where the accident happened but in many other places in the north country that have helped us search, allowed us to search there property, and have also gone out and searched there own property by themselves. I have found these people to be very caring.
