Did anyone else notice the pattern that Harry really comes alive on Friday nights?
Yup, thanks. That's what I thought (about 20/20). It sounded familiar. I do remember there were a lot of sloppy inconsistencies in the 20/20 story. Some of that may have been because there was a lot of old footage, but some of the "voice over" stuff was tweaked for maximum view factor, if you will. They kept referring, for instance, to "the middle of the night" which, yes it's full dark in NH at 7:00, but it's STILL not the middle of the night. It's dinner time.

I remember we discussed these "sensationalisms" a bit in the latter days of the last forum.

The general geologic rock area of the Town, according to Prof. Hitchcock, is known
as "Bethlehem gneiss, "and in this area is found the following varieties of stone: protogene,
common gneiss, granite beds, hornblende chist, soapstone, and limestone.

Ores and minerals arc found in the Town, iron in the region of Iron Ore Hill, which was formerly dug to some extent and drawn to a smelting furnace in Vermont.

Native arsenic, a rare mineral in the United States, and almost wholly confined to New Hampshire, is found on Francis Kimball's farm.

Soapstone was early discovered at the North End, and a few years ago efforts were made in quarrying and bringing it into market, but the attempt proved a financial failure. The vein is from twelve to fifteen feet wide, and the stone is said to be capable of a finer edge than
any other similar stone in the country. Whetstone on Cutting Hill near the Piermont line, exists in immense beds which have been worked for over a half century and manufactured into all kinds of tool-sharpeners. There are granite quarries in the northern and southern parts of the Town. The stone of the latter is said to be of the very finest quality.

Limestone is found along the valley of the NorthBranch of the Oliverian, which has been quarried and burned' in years past in large quantities. It is blue and gniy, the-
former fine, the latter coarse. It is said lime can be made here much cheaper than at Thomaston, Maine.

Arsenic preparations are widely used in homeopathy. And recently, intravenous arsenic trioxide was found to induce complete remission in patients with acute promyelocytic leukemia, apparently by upregulating apoptosis.

There are no indications for the use of supplemental arsenic. Homeopathic claims made for the use of arsenicum album are not supported by credible research. There is preliminary evidence that arsenic trioxide as a drug may be beneficial in the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia and possibly some other cancers.

The Federal Trade Commission today announced 11 law enforcement actions challenging deceptive advertising of bogus cancer cures. The FTC charged the companies with making unsupported claims that their products cured or treated one or more types of cancer. In each case, the company is charged with violating the FTC Act, which bars deceptive claims. Some complaints allege that the companies also falsely touted clinical or scientific proof for their products.

“There is no credible scientific evidence that any of the products marketed by these companies can prevent, cure, or treat cancer of any kind,” said Lydia Parnes, Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection.

“Many of these products are scams,” Parnes said,“and let’s face it, when you’re battling cancer, the last thing you need is a scam. The best idea is to talk to your doctor about any treatment that you are thinking about taking.”

On February 1, 1823, an act was passed by the Maine Legislature providing for the creation of a state prison. On February 10, 1823, a commission... was appointed by the legislature to head the project. Dr. Rose was selected as the agent to supervise the construction of the Maine State Prison. The commission selected the town of Thomaston for its centralized location within the state and its accessibility by boat, making the transport of inmates convenient. The ten-acre tract, then known as Limestone Hill and owned by former Governor William King, was sold for $3000.00. For many years Revolutionary War Hero General Henry Knox had used this land as a working limestone quarry.

The Maine State Prison has had a working industrial program since it's early days when inmates worked the quarry...

Arsenic concentrations that exceed current recommended federal levels for drinking water are 10 times more likely to be found in domestic wells than in municipal water sources in New Hampshire, according to a study by researchers at Dartmouth College. Arsenic in drinking water is linked to certain types of cancer in humans.

Results of the study, involving nearly 1,000 water samples, are scheduled to appear in the May 1 print issue of the peer-reviewed journal Environmental Science & Technology, published by the American Chemical Society, the world's largest scientific society. The study was initially published March 20 on the journal's web site.

The article claims that water from domestic New Hampshire wells contains "significantly more arsenic than water from municipal sources," in some cases more than three times the current maximum contaminant level (MCL) of 50 parts per billion (ppb) established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

A report issued last week by the National Academy of Sciences concluded that the current EPA standard was too high to adequately protect against the risk of cancer, and needed to be addressed "promptly."

Several clusters of elevated arsenic levels in 'bedrock' wells were found in the southeastern and south central parts of the state, mostly near the cities of Manchester and the state capital, Concord, according to the study. Domestic bedrock wells that are drilled deep into New Hampshire's underlying granite base generally have much higher arsenic levels than shallow surface wells, say the researchers.

The article cites another study published last year by the U.S. Geological Survey, involving water samples from several New England states, Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Vermont, that showed ten to 15 percent of the region's domestic bedrock wells exceeded the EPA guideline.

Arsenic in water can occur naturally or as a result of its use in industrial processes, agriculture, and as a wood preservative. The bulk of the arsenic contamination of wells in the Dartmouth study appears to be due to a natural phenomenon, weathering of bedrock, rather than anthropogenic (caused by people), according to the article.

Although arsenic is found in many types of geological conditions, a coarse-grained granite derivative called pegmatite, common to many parts of New England, appears to be the most likely source for the arsenic in New Hampshire well water, the article states.

As a result of the recent NAS report, EPA is considering lowering the maximum contaminant level for arsenic in drinking water from 50 parts per billion to somewhere between two to 20 ppb, says Stephen Peters, one of the Dartmouth researchers.

However, he points out in the journal article, "While changes in the MCL will directly affect towns and cities regulated by the U.S. EPA, they have no regulatory consequences for domestic wells, which are defined as those serving less than 15 households or 25 individuals." The study concludes that tighter federal guidelines would not necessarily "alleviate the health risk" to people who get their water from domestic wells that are not regulated by EPA.

The article claims that 15 percent of the U.S. population, including nearly 40 percent of the people in New Hampshire, obtain their water from domestic wells, most of which, it says, have not been tested for arsenic.

A nonprofit organization with a membership of nearly 159,000 chemists and chemical engineers, the American Chemical Society publishes scientific journals and databases, convenes major research conferences, and provides educational, science policy and career programs in chemistry. Its main offices are in Washington, D.C., and Columbus, Ohio.

This joint status report is submitted on behalf of plaintiff the Department of Toxic
Substances Control ("DTSC") and

defendants Chemtura Corporation

(previously Crompton
Corporation)

("Chemtura")

and the Dow Chemical Company ("Dow").
Status of the Litigation and Parties

This case involves property contaminated by the drum reconditioning operations of San
Joaquin Drum Company ("SJDC") in Bakersfield, California. DTSC is concerned about two
parcels: the main SJDC site, 3930 Gilmore Avenue; and a parcel across the street from the main
site allegedly used by SJDC to store drums, 3213 Gibson Street (the "Cady Property").
DTSC brought this action against six defendants:

Dow, Chevron U.S.A., Inc.("Chevron"), Western Farm Services, Inc.("Western Farm"), Helt
Petroleum ("Helt") and Clifford Pitts. DTSC dismissed its claims against Helt, a defunct
corporation without assets, on September 3, 1999. DTSC's claims against Chevron and Western
Farm have been resolved by settlement. The Court entered Consent Decrees effectuating these
settlements on March 15, 2004, and August 30, 2005, respectively. On DTSC's request, the
clerk entered Clifford Pitts's default on February 26, 2004.

Only DTSC's claims against
Chemtura and Dow remain pending.

Chevron has completed its clean up and investigative work
at the main SJDC site.

The data from Chevron's
investigation show that there is some contamination of ground water at and near the site. The
contaminants of concern in ground water that are above regulatory action levels are lead and
arsenic;

BELOW EXCERPTS FROM:

http://www.mass.gov/dep/water/drinking/231100...

We are all concerned about the quality of the water we drink. Drinking water wells may
be threatened by many potential sources of contamination, including septic systems, road
salting, and improper disposal of hazardous materials. Citizens and local officials can
work together to better protect these drinking water sources.

Warren Water District obtain its water supply from a tubular wellfield located on the
eastern shore of Comins Pond, approximately 9,000 feet north of Massachusetts Turnpike
(Route I-90), and approximately 1,500 feet west of Bemis Road. The wellfield consists of
twenty one 2-1/2 –inch wells and five (5) 8-inch wells. The wellfield has a Zone I which
is essentially a 250 foot buffer around the perimeter of the wellfield. The actual recharge
area to the well may be significantly larger or smaller than the IWPA. The well is located
in an aquifer with a

high vulnerability to contamination due to the absence of
hydrogeologic barriers that can prevent contaminant migration.

Please refer to the
attached map to view the boundaries of the Zone I and Zone II.

Two hundred years ago, General Henry Knox carted cannons bound for George Washington's army down a road that led through the pond. In the 1900s, it became a rock quarry, reaching down some 100 feet into the earth. Its final incarnation, thanks to a few tons of concrete that raised a barrier on the side facing the parking lot, was the recreational pond that remains today. That's where the search for Molly began.

The first place anyone looked was the water.

Regan appears to have tried to abduct the Saratoga Springs High School track star as it was getting dark, but not yet actually dark. The altercation, which is all it factually amounted to, occurred in a high school parking lot with other people relatively nearby. Regan could have confidence in his plan only if he was able to disappear quickly, at a nearby location, or at least be able to transfer his victim out of his vehicle, a minivan, shortly after the possible abduction. There are several possibilities - for example, a hearse (cemetery nearby), an enclosed trailer, or a large industrial building or complex. Intuitively, I doubt the hearse. A plan like this implies fairly strongly that someone else was involved.

Why would anyone want to become enlightened about someone who cannot be known to have existed after the 2003 holiday season?

Virtually all the information thought to be true is now in serious doubt, or worse. Which makes one wonder what the purpose of all this really is. Why would a dozen people (or fewer) argue so (apparently) angrily with each other, using almost no verifiable information? Why would they argue about someone who cannot be known to be missing because it has not been demonstrated that she even was a student, in any meaningful sense, in the Spring 2004 semester at UMass?

How many other forums or discussion boards on a similar subject generate so much smoke and so little fire? How many other similar boards get posted to everyday for a very long time? Hardly any.

There are no boards for Molly Bish or Tina and Bethany Sinclair, even though a far larger amount of information is known about them.

Yet here is a rip roaring board about someone who supposedly disappearanced over four years ago, but about whom almost nothing useful, especially compared to other missing persons, is known.

Is Maura Murray's "disappearance" some kind of ruse? If so, has the activity to support that ruse existed solely on a few discussion boards? Or has it been taken a step or two further?

It's the kind of thing that can really drive you crazy!

I was talking to someone in Mass this week who goes to Umass Dartmouth. There's a male college student missing from there. She mentioned his name but I was on a quest for a different task and I didn't write it down. I wonder if there are any similarities.
