Maybe he's right, but I live in a rural area that resembles a pinball game with deer. They just love to pop out of the woods and run in front of vehicles, especially at sundown when they are impossible to see and during the early evening hours. Deer pose a problem to even the most experienced drivers and Maura would have been clueless regarding how to react if one ran in front of her -- assuming she was sober! I would not at all be surprised if she jerked the wheel to the right to avoid hitting one. In fact, whether it was a deer or other forest critter, I think this scenario is far more likely than Maura all of a sudden deciding to make a sharp right turn into the trees in the middle of a straight section of road just after successfully negotiating a tough 90 degree left turn in the road at the Weathered Barn.
Of course there's still that damn rag in the tail pipe to explain, damnit!
Because I kinda doubt Bambi stopped to put the rag in.

Dawn here you go. Your post above above also states they need police reports so I am confused as to what you are stating.

On a campus-to-campus call, though, it would be a billing address calling itself. My extension calls your extension, or photo desk calls news desk in next office over. Those calls don't get billed because they're one big happy account.

Oh, and it's not my understanding that Beth worked for a newspaper. That was something I'd never heard before, frankly, and I don't know how much truth there is to it.

So maybe it wasn't human contact that did the damage but what she hit afterwards?
The phone ringing right to Maura was for sure
someone who knew where to find her and the direct
line.

Oh my god of course. I'd never even thought about that before. I'd just been relying on "he was not a fixed object" when I thought about that possibility. I've also seen plastic bumpers and fenders sort of bend back into position when they've been hit by a non-firm object. But what you just said had never occurred to me before.

Just curious, but why did they think it was their business to check that out. It would never occur to me to count my daughter's birth control pills.
What's up with that?
Not even if she was missing, Mason? I'd think you'd be counting EVERYTHING, looking for a hint.

NEW to forum! just learned about incident from cnn report. there is so much info some. when i ve read forum some contradict.
First I' ll say. everyone very critical of le. This may very well have appeared to le at scene like minor mva. driver had asked sbd not to call police. no indication of struggle, no yelling reported by neighors, no footprints in snow indicating driver went into woods. le stated in report he, assisted by fd and ems, did search of roadway. only a few minutes had passed. what would be most likely scenario? could your everyday work stand up to close to five years of cloe critisism. he didnot clear area to emergency call suicidal missing teenager came out. is what he did really unreasonable. that is the standard of le did he do what was reasonable

I'm curious. What did the amherst investigation show. Why was it notpossible to show where the call that upset her so much come from. we asked aout tracing calling card ut how about the above call. Was there mention of the video in liquor store/bank show car. anybody in car.

If I may take a guess at the rag in tailpipe. The rag belonged to mm car. Find it highly unlikely that someone went in her car t0 get a rag to stick in her tailpipe in hopes she stall down road.

npw if you subscribe to the fact the ccar was planted which i have not fully decided if i do or don't. it might make sense that unk, subj. used rag to wipe down car of prints and when he/she was done( not wanting to open car again and not wanting to keep apiece of evidence linking he/she to car) looked for convenient place to stow rag why not tailpipe

Hello all,

Maura´s apparent flight from Amherst and the cause of the telephone call at the college security desk which upset her so deeply may or may not be related to the Petrit Vasi hit-and-run case.
Maura herself may not even have been behind the wheel of the Saturn if it indeed struck Mr Vasi on that fateful night.
A friend of hers may well have been driving the car at the time.
Still, the Saturn was legally the property of Maura´s father and the judicial repercussions would none the less have been overwhelming to deal with.

I did a bit of re-reading about Brooke Wilberger on Wikipedia. I had forgotten that she disappeared/abducted 5/2004.
What a pretty girl. They have a suspect, but no Brooke. She was featured on America's Most Wanted.
I remember that hundreds turned out to look for her.. Realizing that she was more or less a local...and it wasn't Winter, it wasn't surprising that so many were out searching. But, I have often thought through these past years as to why there wasn't a search using the locals
snowmobile clubs and trails. I do realize that monies are inadequate for the Fish n Game...but, with so many trails and snowmobiliers...why couldn't the locals have looked around the areas?...like the locals in Brooke's case in Utah?
I recall a man lost in the woods in the Warren, I believe, area..he was found ..alive...by snowmobilers searching.
Perhaps it was "late" for Fish n Game...but, we know that local snowmobilers were out and about that night. Thinking about reverse 911...and.or just phone calls to friends, neighbors, or to local members of the local snowmobile clubs.....Just wondering out loud....

I am aware that I am out of sync with conversation...I haven't taken the time to thoroughly read the many recent Posts.
Found this while looking for something else.
The following written by Sharon (Maura's future mil)..who was very active Forum 1. copy/paste
“I was on duty last night and received a call around 7:00 or 7:30 PM that there was an accident. I arrived on the scene approximately 10 minutes after I received the call. As I was driving to the scene of the accident, I met 5 or 6 cars. When I arrived on the scene there was no one present. I ran the platesand saw that the car belonged to 61 year old Frederick Murray of Weymouth MA. There was only one set of footprints leading from the car.......... I assumed we would hear from Mr. Murray about his car. When we did not, we started trying to reach him today ( note:“today” would have been Tuesday Feb 10th). When we finally reached him this evening, we learned that his daughter Maura, was driving the car.” I asked him many questions and he clearly indicated that he had no knowledge that a young girl was driving this abandoned car.

One other thought, among many, when Fred arrived "before dawn" 2/11 ?
...went to Lavoie's during the first day(s) with Billy...he started the Saturn...then
"gave..turned over" the ownership of car, to Lavoies, in "lieu of payment for storage fee"...why would there be a storage fee...? The car was "evidence"....for LE, wasn't it...??
Don't need an answer...again, just wondering out loud. Now, I will go back to read and try to catch up.

I may have made an unwarranted assumption from the post I read, but I can deal with that since it's the first time in my life I've ever made that type of mistake, unless you want to insist on including the time when I was two and stuck a fork into an electric socket.

Forgive me if this repeats or is missing anything as I am relatively new. Although I've read through many of the posts, there are many that I have missed.
I am wondering if anyone has looked into the possibility of mental illness- specifically, paranoid schizophrenia. Maura was clearly moved by something very big, but it may not have been real. Signs of schizophrenia often show up in young-adulthood, and as far as I understand, someone with paranoid schizophrenia would be highly functioning, albeit delusional.
The call that she received that seemed to have set her off may have been an otherwise ordinary call, but may have occurred right when she was starting to go downhill fast.
According to wikipedia, 40% of people with schizophrenia are drinkers.
Maura is highly intelligent, but much of her behavior in the last five days before she disappeared is baffling. She seemed to be especially vulnerable at night, which is when her accidents occurred.
I am not necessarily saying that this is true, but to me, the simplest explanation for what happened the night she disappeared is that she simply fled the scene. If she was delusional, she was probably a)very determined to get away, and b)very convincing to anyone she encountered that she needed to get away.
Let's say she did get away. What would she do next? My thinking is that she probably walked to the nearest public transportation and left town. If she is alive and mentally ill, I would think that she probably doesn't put down roots anywhere. She has probably also changed her appearance. I doubt that she would be living in shelters or homeless, as she seemed to be quite functional until the end.
Anyway, just a theory. I like it though because it leaves open the possibility that she is alive. I don't think there is anything in the known timeline that does not work with this theory.
The last accident, as someone mentioned, seemed as if she was driving along a straight, dry stretch of road and suddenly slammed on the brakes, as if to avoid hitting a deer. What if it wasn't a deer that she was trying to avoid, but something only she could see.

Hello again,

Just thinking out loud:

The front damage on Maura´s Saturn could be indicative of the car having been towed for some distance.
Could the Saturn possibly have been towed from the location of the disputed first "mystery" accident somewhere further west on Rte 112 (or possibly on the US302/NH10 between Woodsville and the 112 intersection)until it came to a stop at the Weathered Barn curve?

Could the red truck (with possibly MA registration plats) as seen by witness RO on Rte 112 and idling at the parking space of the Swiftwater village store, have been a kind of "disguised" towing vehicle with the towing equipment not visible in the dark if unactivated?

If so, could the red truck conceivably have been towing Maura´s Saturn when it suddenly lost the Saturn at the Weathered Barn due to the sharp curve, frost heaves or whatever?
If so, could the driver of the truck have been panicking, turning the truck around at the corner of Rte 112 and Bradley Hill Road and returning west towards Swiftwater village on Rte 112?

Was the driver of the red truck on the look-out for Maura when he/she perhaps mistook witness RO for being Maura running away from accident location at the Weathered Barn?

Just some random ideas.....

Doesn't speed affect the analysis? Her car wound up 100 feet past the blue ribbon tree and, according to the Uniform Accident Report the road was dry and from another source the temperature was high 20s or low 30s. Also, I believe the snow was piled pretty high alongside the road, so some of the time, her wheels would have been on dry pavement.
Sure wish we had the photos the cops took.
People that drive that road in the winter and know it well also know that the sharp curves and hills are sanded and salted more heavily than the straight stretches of the road. In dry conditions without snow the sand can be almost as slippery as the snow if you are going a little too fast around a curve.
Also the banks were not all that high that year as I think lookingformoose has already stated earlier.

I was just about to compose a post introducing the possibility that she was bipolar and was experiencing a manic episode that was turning into a full blown psychotic break. I've seen friends turn into a completely different person and self-medicate with booze desperately hoping to finally fall asleep. It's terrifying to watch, especially if you've never seen it happen to someone and you don't know anything about bipolar disorder. It's far worse for the person experiencing the delusions, of course.

I know schizophrenia and bipolar disorder are difficult to distinguish and there's a middle ground diagnosis called schizo affective disorder. Now I wish I knew more.

Are you a mental health professional perchance? Would you be willing to brief us on the subject? I think you're on to something and I'd certainly like you to develop this idea, if you're willing.

I wish I had a copy of DSM IV to consult.
