Given the misaligned headlights reducing the driver’s visibility, deployed airbags, and radiator pushed back into the engine, it’s not surprising that the driver lost control of the Saturn at this location. Also possible that someone was towing the Saturn, however Witness RO did not notice a tow truck towing a car during the time she walked E/B on Rte 112 from the Bunga Road intersection (0.24 miles).

Distance walked by witness RO after seeing red truck with MA (or NH temporary) plates. She said the truck passed her as she was walking up the hill on Rte 112 E/B toward the store. There is only one streetlight there and the truck slowed down as if to check her out after passing her. She looked at the license plate and identified it as a MA plate. She never saw the truck before or after that night. She described it as follows.“The only way I can describe it is that it looked like someone who delivered wood. That was my first thought about it........red, MA plates and delivered wood. Either having a wood body or even just slats in the body. It was not a king cab or extra cab. Just a regular truck. That is all I can tell you... Someone asked about the truck and whether it was 4 wheel drive. I believe it was. I have been looking at trucks and have determined that it was definitely a four wheel drive or at least it was a 3/4 ton pick-up, because it sat up high. The other thing I remember is that the window in the back was hard to see in....it wasn't very large.....which tells me it was an older truck maybe?” See message by Lady Gray #1200 @ p. 59.

Stage Stop convenience store to scene of the accident past Weathered Barn: 1.06 miles.

Distance traveled by red truck with MA plates, Sgt Smith, & hosp. employee.

The witness RO saw the red truck leave the Stage Stop parking lot and head E/B on Rte 112 in the direction of the Weathered Barn about 20 to 30 minutes before she saw Sgt Smith drive E/B on Rte 112 past the store. Since she saw him after he was dispatched to the scene of the accident, it must have been no more than 2 minutes before 7:46 pm, which is when he arrived at the scene of the accident. Working backwards, she must have seen Sgt Smith drive past the store at 7:44 or 7:45 pm and the red truck leave the parking lot between 7:15 and 7:25 pm. RO did not mention seeing the Saturn during the quarter mile walk to the store along Rte 112 from Bunga Rd. Either the Saturn passed the Bunga Road intersection with Rte 112 before RO reached that point, which appears unlikely, or the Saturn passed the store after she entered it – she entered the store after the red truck left the parking lot. Since FW and her husband called 911 at 7:27 pm to report the accident, the Saturn must have passed the store 2 or 3 minutes before the accident at approximately 7:23 pm. Bottom line: assuming the red truck continued E/B on Rte 112 and did not turn off or lie in wait somewhere before the accident scene, it would have arrived at the accident scene 2 to 10 minutes before the accident.

Although Sgt Smith probably was travelling faster than the Hosp. employee, it’s odd that the Hosp. employee didn’t see Sgt Smith at the scene of the accident. At 60 mph, Sgt Smith would have driven from the store to the scene of the accident in a little over a minute. At 30 mph, the Hosp. employee would have arrived at the scene of the accident in 2 minutes. Even if they were driving slower, Sgt Smith would still be scoping out the Saturn when HE arrived or HE would have seen him walking up to the SBD’s house, which is 100 yds up the road on the left. If Sgt Smith talked to FW and her husband before he talked to the SBD, it may have been possible for the HE to have passed by while Sgt Smith was talking to them. If, however, Sgt Smith talked to the SBD first, which is likely since the driver was missing and the SBD was the last person to talk to her before calling 911, then it’s hard to understand why the HE didn’t see Sgt Smith walking up the road to the SBD’s house. Perhaps, if Sgt Smith was crouching down examining the driver’s side of the Saturn, the HE might not have seen him.

The Saturn’s final resting place is approximate, but pretty close. It might be a few feet closer to the Weathered Barn than the Bradley Hill Road intersection.

From the accident scene on Rte 112 to the Bradley Hill Road intersection: 0.07 miles(122.69 yards, or 368.07 feet)

From the accident scene on Rte 112 to the SBD’s house: 0.06 miles(104.41 yards, or 313.22 feet)

From the accident scene on Rte 112 to the middle of the curve at the Weathered Barn: 0.06 miles
(104.42 yards, 313.27 feet)

From the Bradley Hill Road/Rte 112 intersection
to Benton: 2.16 miles.

Unknown if there are any overnight lodgings in Benton or an auto repair shop. Maura could have walked to Benton Monday night after the accident, but someone probably would have seen her walking along the road, unless she hid in the woods when she saw a car coming. Depending on the height of the snow bank on the shoulder of the road, she may have had difficulty vaulting or climbing over it without leaving signs that she’d done so. According to the information that I’ve reviewed, searchers did not see any such signs or footprints. I don’t know when it next snowed.
Depending on the extent of her injuries, vaulting or climbing over snow banks without leaving marks may have been impossible.

Visibility may have been extremely poor to non-existent since it was cloudy and there were few, if any street lights along the road (my assumption). I don’t know if she had a flashlight. Perhaps the emergency pack that contained the rag found in the tailpipe also contained a flashlight. Her father gave her the emergency pack so maybe he knows. Needless to say, navigating through the woods at night without a flashlight would have been impossible and very dangerous.

From the Bradley Hill Road/Rte 112 intersection to North Woodstock: 17 miles.

I suspect it would have been difficult to hike to North Woodstock on Tuesday along the road without being seen by someone. Assuming she made it there on Wednesday morning, she may have used a pay phone and the Red Cross card to call her fiancée.

From the Bradley Hill Road/Rte 112 intersection to I-93: 17.5 miles.

By waiting at the I-93 on-ramp, or going to a truck stop, if there is one, she could have hitched a ride north or south on the freeway on Wednesday afternoon or evening.

From the Bradley Hill Road/Rte 112 intersection to Lincoln, NH: 18.3 miles

If she continued to Lincoln, she might have hitched a ride on the Kankamagus Highway to Conway, which is 34.7 miles and driveable in 1 hour and eleven minutes, according to Google Maps. She could have reached Conway by Wednesday night, if everything went smoothly.

SIGNIFICANCE OF DISTANCES 1

CONCLUSION: Since she locked the car and didn’t take her gloves, the diamonds, her birth control pills, or her stuffed animal, Maura probably intended to avoid the cops for the night, find out the next morning where the car was towed, and recover it or make arrangements to have it repaired so that she could continue her journey. Since she left her gloves behind, she probably did not intend to spend the night in the woods. Without a flashlight depending on how cloudy it was, she would have had difficulty following the road. This conclusion assumes she drove the Saturn and was thinking rationally. I doubt that a confederate was waiting nearby to give her a ride because that person would have picked her up before Sgt Smith or the SBD arrived. This conclusion assumes that her confederate was following her closely, or immediately ahead of her towing her car from the scene of the first accident. We lack any evidence to support a theory that before she left Amherst she arranged to meet someone in the vicinity of the accident or somewhere farther down Rte 112.
Since she turned down the SBD’s invitation to wait at his house, I doubt that she would have accepted a ride from someone driving by the scene. I also doubt that she intended to knock on doors looking for a place to stay the night. However, if someone who looked clean-cut, acted friendly, and lived in the neighborhood approached her on foot after the SBD left to offer assistance, she probably would have listened. What other option did she have? After checking her car, he might have urged her to go with him to his place to avoid the cops and a certain trip to jail for DUI. She might have accepted his offer because realistically it was the only choice she had that would avoid arrest. In retrospect, she might have accepted the SBD’s offer to accompany him to his house, if he had agreed not to call the cops. She probably did not have any broken bones, but she must have sustained some bad bruises, particularly if she had been in two accidents that evening. Plus she might have bumped her head on the windshield during one of the accidents. And, she was shivering because the heater did not work. Given her physical condition, the hostile environment, her inability to find her way in the dark without a flashlight, and her fear of going to jail, she may have felt relieved to accept the friendly man’s invitation.
The same may be true of a passing driver although the driver probably would not have had a basis to believe that she wanted to avoid the cops unless he stopped and checked out the scene. There is no evidence that anyone driving a car stopped at the scene of the accident between the time the SBD left in the school bus and the time Sgt Smith arrived. But there is evidence to support the theory that a male arrived at the scene on foot during that short period of time because witness FW told Sgt Smith that she saw a male smoking a cigarette sitting in the front passenger seat after the SBD left the scene.

(1) the construction worker who lived kitty-korner from the SBD,
(2) the driver of the red truck with MA (or temporary NH) plates, and
(3) the Hospital Employee, assuming he lied when he said that he saw Sgt Smith ahead of him on Rte 112 and actually arrived there before Sgt Smith.
Note that the Hospital Employee, assuming he didn’t lie, did not see anyone walking along the road between the Stage Stop and wherever he lives on Rte 112. Therefore, if Maura left the scene on foot alone and walked along the road, she must have walked up to the intersection and turned right onto Bradley Hill Road.
If the construction worker was home, which I believe he has admitted, and looking out the window, he would have seen her. Did he seize the opportunity, approach and convince her that the cops would search for her along the road all the way to Benton and arrest her if they found her? Or, as previously indicated, perhaps he approached her while she was still at the Saturn after the SBD left her and persuaded her to grab some of her things and come with him to avoid arrest.
Keep in mind that she remained in the car until the SBD arrived, which had to be at least 10 minutes. Apparently, the idea to flee the scene to avoid arrest for DUI had not occurred to her or, if it had, she was not in good enough condition to attempt running away.

We have been confounded by the rag in the tailpipe because for almost five years no one has been able to offer a reasonable explanation for its presence. However, if one assumes for the sake of argument that she was experiencing psychotic delusions during that period, one no longer feels like he or she is pounding square pegs into round holes attempting to come up with a logical explanation for her behavior. Conjuring up dark unspeakable conspiracies while playing the what-if game has failed time after time due to lack of evidence. Sooner or later aren’t we going to have to conclude that her behavior wasn’t rational?
If she was delusional, she may have placed the rag in the tailpipe because she believed it would prevent hot air escaping from the engine and therefore warm the interior of the car. But she couldn’t get the car to start because it was in neutral and she may have put the transmission in neutral so that she could push it far enough out of the snow bank to open the trunk and stuff the rag in the tailpipe. When she couldn’t start the engine, she didn’t even think to put the transmission in park, which is basic knowledge that she knew but couldn’t recall. Why did she back into the snow bank? She probably had a reason that made sense to her delusional mind, such as warming up the car, but to us that makes no sense. Instead, we look for a confederate, or someone who followed her from campus with malicious intent and we wonder if someone else was behind the wheel of the Saturn attempting to stage a second crash along a stretch of road bordered by houses to cover up a first crash into a guardrail on a lonely stretch of highway.

The construction worker is the only person in the neighborhood who refused to consent to a search of his property. Since the cops lacked probable cause to believe his house contained evidence of a crime because no one saw him with the young woman and FW could not identify the person smoking a cigarette, they could not get a search warrant. He was not obligated to consent to the search and since he had a constitutional right (Fourth Amendment) to refuse consent, his refusal cannot be considered as evidence of guilt in a legal proceeding, including deciding whether to issue a search warrant. We, however, are not so constrained. He may have refused consent for reasons unrelated to this case, including that he knew he had a right to refuse. But I believe we should at least consider him a person of interest in Maura’s disappearance and find out everything we can about him. Of the choices available, he is the most likely suspect, unless he has an ironclad alibi, which I am pretty sure he doesn’t.
Has he previously been convicted of a crime? If so, did he commit the crime (e.g., simple assault) with a sexual motivation? Sometimes attempted rapes are reduced to simple assault by a prosecutor in exchange for a defendant’s agreement to plead guilty to the less serious offense. This is an example of plea bargaining. Has any person accused him of committing a sexual assault? Has the area where he was working when Maura disappeared been searched by cadaver dogs? Has the area where he said he saw someone the night she disappeared been searched by cadaver dogs? Have those areas been searched recently for human bones? Wild animals typically leave a bone trail that begins at the location where a body was dumped. Has a cadaver dog been led to walk around his panel truck when it’s parked in a public place? The courts have uniformly held that does not constitute a search under the Fourth Amendment.
The HE might have picked her up, if he or she lied about following Sgt Smith down the 112 toward the accident. If we knew when he or she left work at Cottage Hospital, we could calculate the probable arrival time at the Goose Lane intersection with Rte 112. The distance from the hospital to the intersection is 4.64 miles. If the HE maintained an average speed of 30 mph, he or she would have arrived at the intersection in approximately 10 minutes. Let’s allow 15 minutes to account for those dreadful frost heaves. Let’s further assume that he or she took 3 minutes to reach the accident after turning onto Rte 112 and arrived at 7:48 pm. If he or she left the hospital before 7:30 pm, he or she has some splainin to do because he or she would have arrived at the accident scene before Sgt Smith.
The truck with MA plates is out of place and the driver is acting suspiciously, but leaves the parking lot at the Stage Shop before the Saturn reaches the store. No one has reported seeing it at the accident scene and we do not know who was driving it. We don’t have a plate number to run or a description of the driver. Assuming we could track this guy down, which is next to impossible, we have no evidence he was at the scene after the accident. Good luck!
The cops did pull over a red pick-up with temporary NH plates that supposedly look like MA plates, but I don’t know what happened after that.
Therefore, I believe we should focus on the construction worker whose initials are RF and the Hospital Employee whose name and gender I do not know. Perhaps one of you is familiar with the hospital shifts and can post a message regarding the likelihood of a 7:30 pm departure time on Monday evening February 9, 2004.

Wow, I was really disturbed when I read the article:

For Fred Murray, the pain of a missing loved one has been compounded by what he sees as stonewalling from the New Hampshire state police. He is frustrated with local residents, whom he believes know more than they’ve told investigators. He is also frustrated with the New Hampshire press for not putting more pressure on the police to release the case files.

He has been taking his case to the court, trying to force the release of Maura’s files so that the family can conduct their own investigation. However, a New Hampshire judge sided with police when an assistant district attorney told him there was a “75 percent chance” someone would be charged in the case, a fact that Murray called “pure fiction.”

“He made that up right off the top of his head,” Murray said.“If they had a 75 percent chance, they’d have done something by now.” He has re-appealed to the state’s Supreme Court.

Murray is looking for a few specifics from the New Hampshire police. He wants to know why the report of the state police officer on the scene isn’t being provided to the public. He wants to know what’s happened to a bloody knife he turned in as evidence, and a section of carpet a team of private investigators found at a nearby house. He also wants the police to ask the FBI for help.

When I read this article, I was stunned, particularly at the last part. Several of my questions have been answered now. I was extremely curious to know what happened to the carpet and the knife and now I know.

We have had within the last year a few Posters who have Posted with different names....In fact, one of the main reasons of the MMM Forums closing was due to the fact of ...how to put this delicately...hmmm..
I thought I was the reason....cuz I have been hated for so long by Woodsville
resident.... another Poster thought s/he was reason for asking too many questions.
Ones who thought it was amusing to distract the rationale of our purpose of finding justice for a missing girl. Sometimes there were bizzare periods of bizarre yardi yardi...Anyway, since July 2008, and closure of MMM Forum,
we have had periods of ie one person(s) writing using different names.
One can easily determine and scroll on by the weirdo and anger....Most still adhere to basic decency/manners ...Bottom line is still, the Haverhill, NH citizens do not want to know that Maura was harmed in any way within their township.

PS If Bob the Bartender is still here...he is hiding under a different name....haven't recognized him as yet...

When I read the above it seems that the rag was just store in the same place as the emergency kit, not necessarily inside the kit....it was new a Christmas present from Billy's parents.

Unless Maura's car was towed it makes no sense that she would stick the towel in the tailpipe, although it would be the thing to do if you were being towed, or perhaps even just towed out of a snow bank.

The fact that the person at the back of the car as seen by the Marrott and Westman households and remainded there some time, it seems odd then that the person did not employ the emergency equipment but rather used a towel. Both curious and odd!

It appears that the person at the back of the trunk might not have known the emergency equipment was stored in the car, or did not know how to employ the equipment. Given also that Maura's overnight stuff and jewelery remainded in the car, one would think that if it was Maura at the back of the car she would have transfered some of her things into her back pack, since she knew that the car had to be towed, and that she would not be driving it again that night, nor likely again, so why leave the stuff you'll be needing for the night...just doesn't make sense...
such as no clean underwear and toothbrush and leave all the jewelery for someone possibly to steal...

The activity at the back of the car is a mystery, the occupant of the car remained there several minutes, what was the person doing...surely not stuffing the rag in the tail pipe all that time..just another segment of the deepening mystery of what happened at the accident scene...

these seeming inconsistences begs the question was it really Maura at the back of the Saturn

I've never heard of a tow-truck driver sticking a towel into the tailpipe of a car he or she is going to tow. I've asked 3 tow-truck drivers in the area if that was SOP. They laughed at me and said that was ridiculous.

I'm pushing the Maura-was-delusional-all-weeke nd theory because I can't make any sense out of her behavior, unless I assume she was delusional.

I think this was a brain chemistry problem over which she had no control. I don't believe she was more than a casual drinker and I don't believe she was into drugs. I believe she was hearing voices, experiencing visual hallucinations, and feeling paranoid.

Look at her behavior like crashing her dad's car, leaving town with a car that the biggest long-shot Louie at Hialeah wouldn't have bet a fin on it making it to any of the destinations that she had considered. Then 2 more crashes.

Holy Batmobile, Batman! What's up with that?

Recently the name of N.Bruce McKay was mentioned.
He was a Franconia, NH cop in February 2004.
He had, at one time, been employed by the Town of
Haverhill, NH with PD. Many different versions of his foibles has been written. I do not know why his service with HPD was terminated. It was also written, that he was not always welcomed by some local town PDs. From what I understand, he would just arrive at any jurisdictional police call...(guess like Monaghan..?)

These entries have always kinda bugged me.
From Littleton, NH 302/10, to Maura's "incident site" Granny driving would be 25 - 30 minutes. It is not inconceivable for a police cruiser to arrive on or about/within the same time
frame as HPD on 112.

On the page 8, of the Franconia, NH, GCSD Log
9:35P "Radio Unknown/Other
Location ..87 Walxxxxxx Hill Rd. PO29, McKay Norman disp.9:39 cleared 9:46P.."
"Narrative 44k off in the area of the motel unknown reason".

I don't know if NBM PO w/Franconia PD, was "ON" duty that night. If so, where was he between 7:28P (clearing Littleton) and 9:35P (call) OR
9:39 (disp.) 9:46 (cleared) at the motel...what's up with "unknown reason"?

What if...I say IF..a big IF ...he being a nice looking clean cut police officer....picked her up....and took her to the motel in Franconia.....
Sounds safe enough doesn't it....? If an APB had been issued...? BTW..is there any difference in a BOL and an APB...?(I would assume a BOL is very local...and APB would be more extensive...?)

All of the above is merely my observations of timings of the Log..and, assuming a police Log is factual...what if ...what IF....?!
Perhaps SP and /or PIs have already explored any possibilities ...?

Mason, I enjoy reading your posts. Keep up the hard work.

The activity going on in the back of the car could be disputed. VM seems to be the only witness who claims there was someone walking around the car and someone by the trunk while Faith and Tim Westman claim there was someone inside the car, though their versions differ.

The fact that her cell phone, keys and back pack are missing is a *HUGE* clue, perhaps the biggest one of all (aside from witness accounts). ASSUMING she was the one who took these items, she obviously took them with the intention of leaving her vehicle and at some point coming back to her car (even if she knew it would be towed, I'm sure she knew that she could find out where it was towed to).

For those who haven't read the articles on whitmanhansonexpress.com , I urge you to read them. They are easily the most detailed and accurate accounts of this entire case.

I personally think Fred Murray is keeping a cool head about the unparalleled incompetence and stupidity of Law Enforcement in this case. If they had been so stupidly irresponsible and worthlessly incompetent with my children, I'd be calling every single news outlet in the entire country and expressing my rage until it's the most publicized case in the country.

That's one approach that many of us who genuinely care about Maura should try to take: to keep calling different news networks and telling as many journalists as humanly possible about this case. The more publicity in this case, the more pressure that law enforcement will have on them to release the files. It's despicable to me that they still continue to refrain from giving Fred Murray files about his daughter's disappearance.

There were two accidents... one with her father' car on the way to motel.....the other with the Saturn on 112.

I agree that he should be questioned. Anything that looks remotely awkward should be thoroughly questioned. Where is he today?

I agree.......most of the cars in the area where the Saturn was found are out of state as only about 1/3 of the population in that area actually live there--most are 2nd homes or vacaiton rentals.
