In case anyone is wondering because I don't recall reading much about it, my source of information about the booze Maura purchased is the series of articles written by Maribeth Conway. She referenced Maura's sister Kathleen regarding the booze that Maura purchased. Conway also stated that the cops found the receipt for the purchase in Maura's car when they searched it. Since only the unopened box of Franzia was found in her car (the force of the collision caused it to split and that's why wine was splattered around the interior of the car), I think it's very likely that she was not intoxicated. She was doing a favor for someone she believed was her friend and the car was in too bad shape for her to carry it off. I don't know if there was a "first" accident on Rte 112 before the accident just past the Weathered Barn. I'm pretty sure that the damage to the hood did not happen at the scene where the Saturn wound up. If the Saturn hit Vasi, that damage may have happened there. If not, I'm going to vote for a "first" accident on the 112.

Respectfully,

Recommendations to Law Enforcement
I don’t know what evidence you have or don’t have, so I offer these suggestions:
1. I believe UMass police have already identified where the 1 am call to Maura was placed. If it’s in a dorm or a place that had a sign-in desk, I’d take a look at the list and investigate everyone who signed in between midnight and 1 am because the person who called Maura probably signed-in during that time.
2. Check out their home addresses. My person of interest probably has a home address within 20 miles of the Londonderry Tower. If not, check for addresses south of there in the vicinity of the I-93 corridor. The zone extends into Massachusetts past Lowell and you’re looking for a pickup with MA plates.,
3. If you find one or more people that fit, check with DMV and get a list of vehicles bought and sold by each person during the relevant time period. I would look for any pickups regardless of color because they can be painted.
4. Do a little dance, if you find out that someone on your list owned a red pickup with MA plates.
5. Check Maura’s cell-phone records and look for a call from a UMass call from Kennedy to her cell phone between 3:30 pm and the time my person of interest checked voicemail messages. According to my theory, Maura called her cell phone from a land line in the dorm during that time period.

Good Luck,

peripeteia,

Have you looked at Scott Highway, which is a continuation of Rte 302 into Vermont, for a location that matches your vision?

peripeteia,

Check out Rte 232 (AKA: State Forest Rd), which runs alonside the Wells River and up to Ricker Mills. Looks pretty remote.

One final thought. If human remains are found in Vermont and a DNA test matches Maura, there is a basis for FBI jurisdiction.

The cars damage doesn't look like any damage that would be consistent with damage from hitting a person. All kinds of human tissue, hair, clothing, fibers etc. would be evident in a high speed collision with a human. The type of damage looks different also.

Mason -- I think your theory has merit for consideration, with a couple of caveats.

For one, I don't think Maura would have done this for a male friend *unless* he happened to be a boyfriend. While it is possible that she had developed feelings for someone besides Billy, we just don't know. Her feelings would have had to be very strong for her to protect someone in this way, and there is nothing to suggest that she was spending a lot of time unaccounted for (classes, jobs, etc.), which would be the case if she had another love we don't know about.

I could more easily see her protecting a very close girlfriend OR even herself, especially if the situation was that Vasi literally stumbled out in front of the car so that there was no way to avoid hitting him (he admitted he had been pretty drunk that evening). Something like that could possibly give her the "moral permission" to take action to protect her nursing career or that of another, especially when, on Monday the 9th, his condition was upgraded and she felt he probably would live.

Sounds like CK is not well liked, but the link I gave is a quote from a Todd D. Landry affidavit, which includes an explanation of the Londondery cell phone issue.

OK, so, still wondering if the dogs going bonkers at the a-frame was investigated to the point of dismissal, and still wondering if anyone knows for sure that the carpet was tested. I know several posts reference menstrual fluid on the carpet, but has that actually been confirmed by a source outside of this thread (who did the testing, were the results (if any) conclusive, etc.)? If yes, and the dogs' reaction has been satisfactorily explained, then we can begin to exclude the a-frame as a possible lead. Otherwise, in MY mind anyway, it's still near the top of the list. I doubt cadaver dogs go bonkers over things they're not trained for, so for now I'm thinking if there were cadaver dogs, and if they did strongly react, there was a cadaver nearby at some point. I accept the fact that I could be wrong, if so please let me know. I saw a show a few months ago on NatGeo or somewhere similar in which a standard PD bloodhound tracked a man several miles, even after he had gotten into a car and driven thru town, past a beach, making several turns along the way. This gives me confidence that if the dogs did hit, there was quite possibly a cadaver. It also gives me confidence that if the other dog back in 2004 lost the scent 100 yards from the crash, Maura must have gotten into a car, and even then I'll have to assume the dogs only failed to continue tracking her b/c it had snowed.
There was a body found in that area (closer to the Lodge) years ago.........I might be wrong but I think her name was Pauline Clark.... Shack, is that right?

I OFFER A SAD BUT UNIFIED THEORY
Maura Murray receives a telephone call at 1 am on Friday, February 6, 2004, while she is at work in Melville Hall monitoring the sign-in desk. The caller is a fellow student, a young man with whom she is acquainted and regards as a close friend. During the first two weeks of the new semester, she let him use her Saturn that she had decided not to use to commute to her clinicals because it was unreliable. She had been hitching rides to her clinicals with other nursing students.
Her friend tells her that he hit someone at the intersection of Triangle and Matoon streets, panicked, and left the scene. He’s afraid he might have killed the person because he hit him pretty hard. He says he doesn’t think anyone saw the accident, but he’s not sure. He doubled back to check on the guy and saw him on the ground, apparently dead or unconscious. The news upsets Maura and one of the reasons why she is upset is the car is registered to her father, Fred Murray, and she promised him that she wouldn’t lend it to anyone. She is so upset that her supervisor, Karen Mayotte, lets her off early and walks her to her dormitory, Kennedy Hall. Maura won’t tell her why she is upset.
She and her dad go shopping on Saturday to buy a car to replace the Saturn, which he plans to trade-in as part of the deal. Maura is worried about the condition of the Saturn, which is badly damaged from the hit and run collision the previous night. She discusses the situation with her friend and they decide they have to get rid of the Saturn before her dad sees the damage or the cops show up knocking on her door to question her about it. They figure they have to get rid of it before the following weekend when her dad plans to return to campus, close the deal on the new car, and turn in the Saturn.
Continued in Part 2
very plausible, IMO...and the most compelling reason to leave campus.
was she in the habit of lending her car?

also, it's been suggested Vasi might have sustained his head injuries from being thrown and, therefore, contact with the ground/curb.
is that correct/incorrect?

Part 4
What happened to Maura? I believe her “friend” and his associate had discussed the possibility that Maura might snitch them off and what they might do to prevent it. Getting rid of the Saturn by pushing it off a cliff in the wilderness and later reporting it stolen wasn’t going to work. Sgt Smith probably passed them going the other way, so they knew there would be an investigation and a search for Maura because they saw the SBD talk to her. He would provide a description and the area soon would be crawling with cops, dogs, and people looking for her.
What would she say when they found her and she was facing her own criminal charges, even if they were misdemeanors? How could she be trusted to keep her mouth shut, if the cops linked the Saturn to the hit and run accident back in Amherst and started leaning on her for that crime. Even with her work alibi, they could make her sweat. They talked it over and agreed to do what they decided was necessary to save their own skins. The former “friend” was looking at a possible vehicular homicide charge, if Mr Vasi died, and conspiracy to destroy evidence. His friend was looking at being charged as an accessory after the fact to vehicular homicide and conspiracy to destroy evidence. To their way of thinking, the only obstacle to their continued freedom was Maura Murray and it was only a matter of time before the cops would be leaning on her for answers, unless she disappeared. They decided to double down.
I think they took Maura somewhere in the wilderness as far away from the Saturn crash site as possible avoiding towns and heavily traveled roads hoping to avoid arousing suspicion or to give anyone an opportunity to see Maura. They would have killed her before daylight because the odds that someone might see her in the truck would have been much greater during the day. When they reached a suitable place, they would have stopped “to stretch their legs” and as one of them engaged her in conversation, the other approached her from her behind and struck her with a blunt object, possibly a tire iron. I doubt if she even knew what hit her before she lost consciousness and died.
After they disposed of her body, perhaps by rolling it down an embankment and covering it with brush, they got back in the truck and drank up the booze she thoughtfully purchased to give to her “friend.”
Little did she know that it would be the last gift she would ever give to another human being.
I’m so very sorry to have written this, but I think this is the way it went down and I offer it to all of you to consider.
Respectfully to all,
M
it is a huge leap to imagine "friends" turning on another so violently, but the motivations to do so are very strong.

sadly, i cannot disagree with your theory.

Really? You were? Wow, people are so different! I, on the other hand, was not offended at all. And while it has yet to be established that Maura was drinking the night she disappeared, she WAS drinking on occasions as recent as that weekend in Sara Alfieri's dorm room. Don't know which pansie was referring to.

It is always offensive to casually attach a psychiatric diagnosis to an individual without a professional workup.
I'll assume you think otherwise.

Why not let Sara Alfieri speak to Maura's drinking habits, shall we?

Unless I am missing your point, Advocator, I contend that deeply held male/female friendships need not be based in romantic attachment.

I believe her motivation to protect either a male or female friend would be equally strong as evidenced by social groupings in high school and college.

Wow,

Over the past few days I've had difficutlty following this topix forum.

The few facts there are and the opinions of the experts have become muddied.

FYI, numerous expert criminal profilers have reviewed Maura's case and offered their opinions.

I'm sure these expert criminal profilers have forwarded thier recommendations to NHSP.

I will continue to hold on the hope that Dr. Godwin forwarded a search grid to the NHSP. I have noted numerous searches conducted by Fish & Game over the years.

The last search to make the news was when human remains were found off a remote trail off of 112.
The remains were identfified, no foul play was suspected.

One final note:

Numerous experts have stated that the person(s) responsible for Maura's disappearance has done it before and will do it again.

Exactly..this is why I believe that she would have called somebody during that drive if she had her cell phone...even if it was just to chit chat. But since she didnt make any calls during that trip, I dont think she had it with her..or she was hellbent on not using it and making sure it was off. If I were Fred I dont think I would have cut off her cell phone service yet, in the hopes that just one time her or someone turns that thing on and purposely/accidentally makes a call with it.

I mean a $30/month cellphone bill is a small price to pay when it could be that one break you actually get.
