Taking her books seems to imply either she planned to come come back or even more genius on her part if she actually intended to bail (just to keep us guessing). The possibility of a plan to escape but an even more sinister, random ending for her seems too remote for me. I doubt she'd go to all the trouble of even considering NH if she planned to disappear. So, either someone else planned her demise or she fell victim to life's unfortunate sinkholes.
