Thanks, Teagle, I've gotta think more objectively and look for those sensitive nerves... and just keep probing... think more like the scientist (what scientist?) I always refer to as collecting all information, all reactions, etc. Yes, I felt like you and I were getting slammed; you're right --- I do prefer to "play nice" but now I see this as an excellent opportunity to get tougher and just deal with it. Whiston really is a hero. Very early on --- will try to check it out --- thought I read that the "art gallery" was an on-campus one. At this point, with so much information, right and wrong, who knows? Thanks for telling it like it is. Glad Pike is here --- quija

Firstly it matters not one whit from a moral perspective if Maura were drunk on that evening such that she could be viewed by anybody as deserving to have suffered an awful fate as punishment for her perceived drunkenness. A couple of years have now passed and a case of severe stress at the prospect of driving a vehicle she dreaded may have caused her to drink a bit to calm her nerves: to psyche herself up as it were. Perhaps she over imbibed and became drunk. I do not know. I would not say a word of reproach to her were I to meet up with her today. I mean, since she was not known as a drunk driver, I will assume that, were she drunk on that night, that it was an anomalous event, or at worst the second occurence of possible inebriation in that tumultuous period shortly before she left. Having said this I would still point out that all the items listed here would have put her in a far worse position were she to have been drunk on that fateful evening. Whether anybody likes it or not, ones state of inebriation cannot be discounted when pondering what has happened. I would hope that not a soul alive would suggest that, were Maura to have been drunk that evening, then she deserved to be abducted and murdered or to have suffered some other disaster.

My words here:
Look at every theory inside and out.
What I state about few known facts is fact no matter which way you twist it.
Look at these statements:
Maura was drunk when she disappeared.
(We don't know)
Maura was sober when she disappeared.
(We don't know)
Drunk Maura took a ride with a stranger
Sober Maura took a ride with a stranger
Drunk Maura was abducted
Sober Maura was abducted
Drunk Maura fled on foot and died of hypothermia
Sober Maura fled on foot and died of hypothermia
I ask you to show me where the word drunk matters. This is what I am saying. There are no lines to read between.

Watching --- I don't think I'm looking for attention. If I was, I'd be talking like a crazy person, and I am NOT doing that. Reading your words, I read you as saying that IF Maura was abducted what difference would it make if she had been drinking a little, a lot, or was totally sober? Is that correct? Well, IF she was abducted, the perp should be put away or worse. It makes no difference if the victim was a huge, star foorball player or a little old lady with a cane. But i still maintain that a "victim's" state of consciousness IS important in terms of their being targeted, their ability to defend themselves, their ability to focus on something about to happen, and all the other stuff. I am not blaming someone who is not super-alert, if that was the case here. I just think that if someone is endangered due to some kind of impairment, it makes a difference in how to explore the possibilities of a disappearance. And there have never been signs of a struggle, injury, or foul play mentioned. There have, however, been signs of upset, maybe depression, maybe some drinking, maybe an emotional breakdown, and maybe some less-than-truths told by Maura listed in the facts.(None of these is anything any of us have NOT DONE ourselves.) Without being sarcastic, i think a list of known facts, actions, and behaviors would be helpful here. And, Watchful, telling me I "wanted attention" turned out to be helpful for me! It DID remind me of what kids say in junior high to intimidate another kid! Thanks.

But remember... Infighting on this board benefits no one as much as it does the guilty. At least half the posting on this thread is about interrupting free discussion. It's very simple. There are those with ideas - goofy or otherwise. And there are those who personally attack those with ideas. There is very little overlap between the two groups. Debating a theory based on its merits is one thing, but pummeling the poster with insults is deliberately counterproductive.

Probably transgender if s/he's been putting conspiracies in my underwear, but there's no pronoun for the transgendered, so I went with a she. No insult to women. Or men. Or anyone in between.

Is there any way (at this late date with tiny broken-off car fragments long gone) to zero in on where a "first accident within a mile of the weathered barn" took place? Any clue it it was east or west?

<quoted text>sorry I should have been more specific with what I was looking for. Okay if you have a copy of a police dispatch log and then at a later date recieve a copy of the exact same page of the dispatch log shouldn't both copies have the same info on it? Or is LE allowed to make changes on these logs by adding or taking things out?
I know the Chief of Police and former Chief pretty well here in town, I'll ask them and see what I get for a reply.

Hi all,

I´m a journalist writing from far-away Europe and have been following the Maura Murray case over the last few months, since I first chanced upon it on a Wikipedia list of mysteriously missing people.
Since then I have read practically every kind of information I´ve been able to find about this highly intriguing and tragic case.
For what it´s worth I believe that a close friend of Maura´s was somehow involved in the Petrit Vasi hit-and-run incident in Amherst and that this person somehow forced Maura to help her getting rid of the Saturn before it was being due to be traded in for a newer car in Amherst.
I also feel reasonably certain that the young lady which a reliable witness in a Barton, VT, church met and briefly spoke with back on Father´s Day in June 2005 might well have been Maura.
I will probably not be a regular poster here on Topix, but will contribute when and if I´ve got something potentially worthwhile to say.
Thanks!

Thanks for the info about HIPPA. This means my wife, who had worked in the ICU for 16 years and was often charge nurse in the unit during the time Vasi was a patient there, would have been legally restricted from telling me anything about Vasi's condition that wasn't public information. But if she took any suspicious phone calls from people inquiring about Vasi's condition, would HIPPA apply to that as well?
HIPAA states that you must not release information without a signed and witnessed "Release of Information" to anyone other than someone involved in "payment, treatment or operation". It even makes it difficult for families to get information these days. It applies, to in person, telephone, email, fax, EVERYTHING.

Thanks, this addresses the patient, but what about the bogus phone calls seeking information about the patient?

Say, for example, my wife received one or more calls by someone impersonating a Vasi family member who was seeking information regarding Vasi's exact condition. Would HIPPA prevent her from discussing those bogus inquiries with someone else as long as no information about Vasi was included?

Could she say, for example, "I received a couple of phone calls from someone in Amherst who pretended to be the sister of a hit-and-run victim. She wanted information about him, but I told her she could not have any information because she was not the victim's sister because the victim does not have a sister." Or something like that.

In other words, she would not be discussing the patient's condition, care, or anything like that; not even, necessarily his name. She would just be saying that someone had been calling the unit to find out about the patient and the caller was not who she said she was - was not a family member.

Thanks.

Might make sense to talk again to either Karen Mayotte or other students who worked security desks to determine if, like other security people, they're "allowed" to make coffee runs, but not necessarily "on the record". It was called ridiculous on another forum that it might be in a supervisor's interest, the school's interest, or in the interest of a person who covered for Maura in her absence from the desk, to deny she made a coffee run after everything that happened. I'm not sure what to think about this.

Eurobserver, it did seem like the man who thought he met Maura in the church in Barton, VT was a decent man, a father with daughters himself, not just a kook, for sure. Guess he's important to check out too.

No-one in the Stage Stoppe Store saw Maura that night, did they?

Not to "knock things off course," but about a year or two ago, while researching some religious groups in Vermont, I came across an online group photo of young people, probably in a church or other institutional kind of building. In the front row, lower right I think, but might have been lower left, there was a girl who looked a lot like Maura.

I didn't at the time think it was likely her and told myself that I would just come back to it after a few more clicks and bookmark it but I could never find my way back to it. That computer is long gone, so there is no way to trace it now unfortunatley.

I would definitely not want to raise false hopes. The likelihood of Maura having been in that photo is very, very small. But if anyone cares to sift through the hundreds or thousands of photos online looking for her, that might be a place to start.

The best I can remember is that it either was a religious group from Brattleboro - I can't quite recall their name but I would remember it if I heard it again - or one from the Hanover NH area, possibly one affiliated with Dartmouth. The Brattleboro group was not way, way out there, but it was not a mainstream Protestant group, either. Might have been named something like Agape Fellowship or something like that. I don't think they had their own church. They emphasized a lot of missionary work.

Sorry, wish I knew more, but there is very little chance that it was Maura anyway. Was almost certainly someone who merely resembled her.

Hey, hey, you're intruding on my identity rights here! How will I know who I am if I keep getting called something like bird brain? Forget I asked.

I have no idea whether Maura was heading anywhere, much less why. I have a couple of hunches, but the facts remain the same. Maura was last seen on a couple of security tapes in Amherst on Monday afternoon. Her father's car, which she had apparently been driving while at UMass, was found Thursday evening about three hours north of Amherst.

The Saturn may have left Amherst before Maura left Amherst. The Saturn may have gone north on Sunday night and Maura may have gone south on Monday afternoon. Or she may have left Amherst on a train a week later. Or a year later, for all we know. I'm not sure what the chances of any of this are, but right now, from what little we know, almost anything could have happened.

Why do you ask? What are you thinking?
