Quija asked if anyone agrees with:

I don't think anyone responded to my long post from a few days ago. So, does anyone think there was someone at Maura's part-time art gallery job that she wanted to see on the Sunday before she left? She left there just 6 hours before she talked to her dad and apparently started doing computer searches for a getaway place...

Yes, one of the theories I posted is that she was having an affair with someone who worked there, possibly the owner, who may have been married. I theorized that he may have been the person who called her early Friday morning at work and upset her.

4. Anyone agree that since Maura told everyone she needed to be excused from classes and work for a week that there was no way she could return to campus before that week was (approx.) up?(She'd have to explain why she was back early, etc.)

Yes, I agree.

5. Anyone think that her final decision to leave was made after 2PM Sunday afternoon, after her dad left to return to Bridgeport, and after she arrived for her art gallery job, as usual?

Yes, this fits with my theory about an affair, although the decision could have been made Friday evening when she worked at gallery. They may have agreed to get away together to talk things over.

Anyone think that her plans to leave began to accelerate after she talked to her dad at 11PM-11:20PM Sunday night? That seemed to be the time after which the computer searches for destinations, emails to profs, and phone calls took place. Other loose ends were tied up on Monday before she left. WHAT HAPPENED TO MAKE MAURA PUT INTO ACTION A DECISION TO TIE THINGS UP AND GO UP NORTH? If that's what happened...

I theorized that she already had decided to go, but was in no particular hurry to leave early Monday because the other person could not leave until later, so she dawdled looking at various possibilities for places to stay to recommend to the man.

BTW, I don't believe anyone said the cruise control was on. I recall reading that the transmission was in neutral, which has led to speculation that the Saturn was towed with a rope.

You can't stand on any street corner long in the Amherst-Northampton area without seeing a tow truck go by - because the car they are towing or are about to tow violated a parking restriction. Tow trucks are constantly on the move, especially at night and in the winter. Dec-March is their big season.

But the tow truck drivers need some kind of official authorization to tow a vehicle, don't they? So the police would sort of know most of the drivers, and certainly their employers, pretty well, wouldn't they?

Quija,

Sara Alfieri also worked at the gallery and she likely would have known or at least suspected that Maura was romantically interested in someone at the gallery, if that were the case, and I doubt she would have mentioned it after Maura disappeared because she would not have realized that the information may have been relevant.

BTW, the Saturday night dorm party was in Sara Alfieri's room.

So if the Saturn was towed to NH to be crushed because it had hit Vasi, then would anyone have been in a position to successfully deny Maura's alibi without fear of contradiction, have a key to her room, have access to her computer, and be friendly with a tow truck driver? And have a good reason to borrow the Saturn and drive it from Lot 12 or wherever it was parked late Thursday night?

If not, then how about stem cells?

I am still of the opinion that during the second accident at the barn Maura probably knocked the transmission into neutral by mistake. At that point she could not restart the car because of the neutral safety switch and whether she didn’t know about the neutral safety switch or didn’t realize how it worked. It was at that point, when she realized that police would be coming and she could not drive away that she decided to leave on foot. If she realized that the car was in neutral (and the front tire wasn’t flat which might be the case now) she might have restarted the car and driven away again.

I have beating the phone info like a dead horse. I'm a little grumpy today and I posted on the other site - so take a look. I didn't want to go there but

If you truly understand the Patriot Act - you will see what I am talking about is true. someone mentions triangulation with towers - that is true - if there is a missing link in data - phone is in LA an hour later shows up in Walnut Creek CA. They then do triangulation - last call airport or phone shut off in downtown LA

This person took a flight.

CDMA has a gps function. Carriers had to comply - Patriot Act. I didn't want to go there. Because its a world I live in every day and people get scared - with all the consiracty on here - I knew this would be a topic that would be off topic and go on forever

Patriot Act - yes big brother knows where you are at, who you call, what you write

.......... and yes they can listen

Who was the friend of Maura's who said that she didn't want to get Maura into trouble (when she was questioned by investigators?)

Boston Globe, March 2, 2004

...The more details are revealed, the more baffling the case becomes, police acknowledge. Yesterday, Thrasher said that Maura had fastidiously packed all her belongings into boxes before she left school, even removing the art from her dorm room walls. Meanwhile, one UMass friend has seemingly withheld information from police, saying she didn't want to get Maura "in trouble."

(Posters in the past have said this could be any little thing.)

Also for the record - I have not nor would i ever use my job to search Maura's phone records. My job is too valuable - and I have not worked for Sprint................. If I did would be very tempting but I would not do that. My info is FACT based on what I know of wireless technology

I have had several PM's asking about the call.

Please read the patriot act and you will see - this is all true and has been around since shortly after 9/11. This also is true for landline calls and almost all international calls.

Now do I think the govt is listening to all calls NO. Do I think they are listening to Fred M - Hell No. They have to have a good reason with national security - however - with a subpeona for a missing persons - you could get the call info.

In case the family is reading - NO I do not think your calls are being monitored - not for one second.

With regard to mcsmom, I believe it's always appropriate to question a reporter about possible bias or prejudice that may have affected the reporter's objectivity. Inquiries of that nature should be expected and should have been asked of Judith Miller, the New York Times reporter who vigorously beat the administration's war drum with false information about WMDs in Iraq provided by the administration.

Suzanne,
Here's the quote.
"Smith was able to speak to Fred Murray at 8 p.m. on Feb. 10. In the initial, official police statement, Fred Murray stated that his daughter, Maura, was depressed and he was fearful for her safety. He informed Smith that she had an accident in Hadley, MA on Feb.7, 2004, wrecking another vehicle of his and totaling thousands of dollar's worth of damage.
Murray told Smith that he hoped Maura wasn't doing the "old squaw walk" which Murray explained was something the two of them often joked about. The squaw walk referred to when it came time for the old Indians to die, they would walk off into the woods and die. Fred Murray requested that HPD call in the FBI, state police and a search began immediately for his daughter."
Well even if it was a phrase father and daughter used privately between themselves in a 'joking' manner, I nevertheless think it is inappropriate for FM to use it in discussing the possible suicide of his daughter. I just find the phrase 'squaw walk' to be gross, vulgar, crude, sexist and racist. My father would certainly never use it under similar circumstances.

Mason Thanks for having me read #10116 on page 503. I never read that and I find it very interesting. Food for thought. Some would say that this scenario is overly imaginative and fanciful but I think it is a classic case of thinking outside of the box. In some ways it makes good sense.
