Sorry you present no logic to direct investigation away from Haverhill, that is not to say that the events and circumstances of Maura's disappearance began in Amherst and should be investigated. Perhaps you should take up you theory with the press and the District Attorney's office about the monies and resources being spent and used on a red herring. I am sure the citizens of Haverhill would be very interested to know that law enforcement is wasting resources knowingly to placate a disatisfied Father whose daughter has run off to Canada? or whatever scenario you have come up with, see how far you get with this and let us know the response.
So lighten up, Beagle before you find yourself being sued by the people in the building across the street from Maura's dorm.
You must take law enforcement to be fools, I realize that they have limited resources, but fools I do not imagaine them to be. Or in your scenario are they being paid to be quite like the private detectives because they too have a conflict of interest?

Could the Thursday night call that upset Maura have been from a Residence Counselor (or friend, even) who told her that she was being asked to leave UMass?
Could a stolen item listed in the Police Logs of the UMass Amherst Daily Collegian have been found in her dorm room? Or was she caught on video at a store? Like one entry in the UMass Police Logs involved someone using a forged check to buy a laptop computer at (I think it was) the college bookstore? I understand UMass is the size of a city, but the police logs about stolen purses, laptops, etc. just got this idea started...
Did Maura call her dad?
Did her dad come up that weekend to help Maura get stuff in order?
If I were a dad, I'd be concerned about my daughter, upset, disappointed, and angry because of how much I loved her. And then the Saturday night car accident?
Was Maura told that this would not go on her permanent record if she sought counseling?
Did she pack up the room that weekend?
Was there a plan worked out, but Maura ran away "off script"?
When in doubt, look for a pattern of behavior.

If I were a local I would ask that exact question out of pure innocent curiosity and my need to put this missing person into some sort of context.

I have two properties in NH with my main house located in CT. One in the Whites and the other farther south near Lake Ossipee. I have camped and hiked for over two decades in the White Mountains and know the area and people pretty well. So well in fact that I would bring my boys, wife and mother-in-law up there for vacations summer after summer for years. Liked it so much I use to go camping up there with my nephew for years. Liked it so much I bought not one but two houses up there. Liked it so much I plan on spending much if not all of my retirement up there with my wife. Liked it so much that I spend at least one week alone camping in the Whites every year and have done so for years. Bravo to you for seeing what a twisted, distorted, jaundiced view that she has of the area and the people. It has to make someone wonder what she is trying to accomplish and does she even believe the BS that she throws around in a public forum. BRAVO to you.
