She had completed "Beast", a very grueling physical test designed to separate the sheep from the goats. . Not only did she complete Beast, apparently she thrived under its pressure and rigor from what Sharon said. That alone makes me wonder what might have happend (at UMass or elsewhere) that might have caused her to become so upset. Frankly, it also leads me away from the suicide scenario. If you're going to have an emotional breakdown, Beast seems like as good a time as any, and better than most. Beagle, yes, I think you're the only one with a time lag. Maybe UMass is reading your email, too (please god let me be kidding about that)

Maybe the calls were not made for a specific place to stay, but were looking for a specific person? As in, "Did s/he say they had a time-share at Attitash? Or was it Stowe? Or was it Loon Mountain?"

Maybe UMass is reading your email, too (please god let me be kidding about that) Well, YOU may be kidding, but they're not. Here's just how insane LE/DHS is. I am on a terrorist watch list because my first name begins with Al. And does not continue on to spell Alan or Allen or any other more frequently used name. The other reason is that in January, 2002, right after the shoe-bomber incident, I sold on eBay a model C-4 camera to a guy from Paris.(C-4, also being, of course, the plastique of choice at the time.) AND THEN, in February, 2002, my ex and I flew on the same AA flight that Richard Reid, the shoe bomber, had previously taken from Paris to Boston. Goes to show you just how unwelcome the average person can become in the eyes of LE. And if they want to connect you with something like an abduction or murder, they just do not let go. No way are their minds going to be changed by the facts. And that's part - not all - of the problem in cases like Maura's. Once an idea gets in an investigator's head, it's almost impossible for him to let it go, no matter what the contrary evidence is. Just look at Richard Jewel.

Hey Beagle, The United States is one of the few countries left in this world where a person is innocent until proven guilty. As for me, I've stuck by the experts all of these years and in doing so I've learned a lot and hope to use it for good someday. I believe Maura would want this. I've learned that NH/VT needs to toughen their laws and sentences for offenders against women and children. I was recently talking with an officer whom has worked in the feild for twenty five years and he openly stated, "There is no reform for those types fo offenders". We discussed why people don't understand this and how the different states have handled Jessica's Law. I'm very proud of the fact that NC is one of the most progressive states in this country. This past winter I got a phone call from home about woman I know of who is just a few years younger than me. He car slid off a rural road and while she was trying to get it unstuck a clean cut and well spoken man stopped and offered his help. At first he pushed the vehicle and then suggested he get behind the wheel and try to rock it back and forth. When the woman stepped out of her vehicle she was brutally raped and beaten in a matter of minutes. She was able to get a partial plate number and a description of the vehicle. The perp was a repeat sexual offender with a long criminal history from NH.

I've probably said all I have to say, and more than once, so I won't perseverate. Guess we'll all carry on and post new facts and look for new avenues to explore. Stay cool.

whiston, you saw this in USA Today from Feb. 5, 2004 just before 9PM? The timing of this might've allowed for a friend with a computer (i think there was no computer at Maura's security desk) to call her about it later that evening. However, I don't think that happened to Maura at West Point. http://www.usatoday.com/news/opinion/editoria...

I posted this years back on the MMM or PM'ed Helena. It may or may be relevant.
At the end of Jan. 2004 a young basketball player who had transferred from West Point to a college in the south as a junior (thinking SLU, LSU, George Mason u?)died suddenly while in practice before a game. I vaguely remember being told Maura probably didn't know this student, but now, years later, thought I'd toss it out again. I remember now! I was trying to figure out the Feb. 5th crying episode and I was told it was doubtful that hearing the news about the boy would reduce Maura to tears. And... that's probably correct. At this point I can't find his name, but I think his family lived in Colorado. No luck searching the SSDI or newspapers. Even years back the tragedy only got a line or two in one college article. That didn't seem right. Think of the entertainers in the news, geez! It seemed like it was possible Maura knew him, tho... West Point, same class?, transferring same time (IIRC), athlete, whatever...

Maybe UMass is reading your email, too (please god let me be kidding about that) Beast never gave her the right reason to break. You can break anyone given the right tool. Something made her have the "crying jag", we just don't know what it was that caused it. For me a breakdown at that age probably would be caused by damage to my reputation or a serious family issue or death. Which brings up a good question. Could Maura have actually thought that there was a death in her family? That is why she sent that email? Of course then why didn't she check with anyone in her family and why head up north? This type of problem certainly didn't seem to be reflected in that last email or text to Billy. Bill

GAO: Academy sex assaults may be underreported
By Brendan McGarry - Staff writer Posted : Wednesday Feb 20, 2008 3:07:29 EST The U.S. Military Academy has taken steps to prevent sexual assault on campus, but student surveys indicate such incidents may be vastly underreported, according to a new government report.
West Point reported 45 sexual assaults from 2003 through 2006, according to a Government Accountability Office report released Tuesday.
That was the same as the Air Force Academy near Colorado Springs, Colo., and compares to 55 at the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Taken together, the Defense Department academies reported 145 sexual assaults during the four-year period, according to the GAO report.
The Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., part of the Department of Homeland Security, recorded 12 sexual assaults during the same period, according the GAO report.
However, anonymous surveys administered in 2006 indicate about 200 female students and 100 male students at the Defense Department academies may have experienced “unwanted sexual contact” in 2005 alone, according to the GAO.
“Unwanted sexual contact doesn’t necessary mean sexual assault,” said Brenda Farrell, GAO’s director of defense capabilities and management.“But it is a little alarming when you look at those numbers and then you look at the number of sexual assault cases reported.… There seems to be a gap there.”
The GAO report states,“Although the term unwanted sexual contact includes a range of activities that the Uniform Code of Military Justice prohibits and thus cannot necessarily be directly compared to reported cases of sexual harassment or sexual assault, survey results nonetheless suggest that cases may be underreported and that the academies may not have full visibility over the total number of incidents of sexual harassment and assault involving academy students.”
In the survey, students were asked,“Have you experienced any of the following sexual contacts that were against your will or occurred when you did not or could not consent,” such as sexual intercourse, oral or anal sex, or penetration, according a portion of the questionnaire included in the report.
In a statement, Col. Bryan Hilferty, director of communications at West Point, said the academy has taken steps to prevent and respond to incidents of sexual harassment and assault. He cited the creation of the sexual assault response coordinator position and training programs geared toward prevention and response.
“We agree that sexual harassment and assault contradicts our core values: duty, honor, county,” he said.“None is the only acceptable level of these incidents.”
Nine of the 126 alleged perpetrators from all service academies identified in the “unrestricted” reports, which are filed by victims and trigger a formal investigation, were subjected to courts-martial, according to the GAO. Of those tried, five were convicted and four were acquitted.
The report recommends the Coast Guard begin annual reporting of sexual assault statistics like the other academies; and for the Defense Department to adopt common terms to better compare statistics between academies, establish performance measures to evaluate sexual harassment and assault programs, and provide Congress with “lessons learned” in future reports.
“Right now, Congress is getting data, a lot of information, but it would be good if DoD could take a step back and do an assessment of what’s working and what’s not working in order to help Congress in its future decision-making,” Farrell said.

SLU-SFA game postponed
NEW ORLEANS - A men's basketball game scheduled for tonight between Southeastern Louisiana and Stephen F. Austin was postponed indefinitely after a Stephen F. Austin player died suddenly Friday. Greg Wallace, a junior redshirt transfer from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, died in Nagodoches, Texas. The team was en route to Hammond at the time and immediately returned to the campus."Basketball fades into the background when a tragedy such as this

Euro - here in the States there have been a lot of exposes of assaults in the military academies. The scary thing is that an upperclassman (male) can easily find some little infraction to "hold over" a younger female cadet and i found some horrifying reports about what the females were repeatedly subjected to, to ensure silence. I'm not sure i even like this world any more. I'll see if I can find a less graphic military woman's story to post here.
