Personally I don't understand the pleasure it brings...especially on this topic of Maura..which certainly cannot be viewed as a game. To Citigirl and the Murray family, I don't know how you have endured...first the crime..then ..a few sickos trying to be many, who attempt to care. Moderated or not..where are the sensibiities..? If this comment is targeted at me, I previously have explained that I have a dark sense of humor. It's a self-defense mechanism that has helped me remain sane. If you think I'm bad, you should hear what homicide cops and medical examiners say to remain sane. I'm sorry if my remarks have offended others, but I've been hoping that the substance of my remarks have been helpful. I want to find Maura Murray and I want to find her alive. If she isn't alive, I want to find out what happened to her and nail the person or persons responsible. Make no mistake about that. I recognize and respect the family's right to privacy, but there are some matters, like the condition of the Saturn before the trip north, that do not appear have anything to do with the family's privacy. There are many people here like myself who want to help and using words like "sicko" while lamenting our lack of sensitivity is inflammatory nonsense in my opinion, particularly when the family has a history of stonewalling efforts to find out what caused Maura to drive north. I believe firmly that the answer to what happened to Maura will be found in Amherst and I do not intend to stop looking there until I am satisfied that it isn't to be found there. If you don't like that, well that's just too bad.

And just in case anyone is wondering, I have never used any other name than Mason when posting to this site and this is the only missing person or Maura Murray related site that I have posted to.
I was a criminal defense attorney for 30 years specializing in death-penalty defense, forensics, and complex litigation. I know much about serial killers because I have represented a few of them and consulted on other serial-murder cases. Now I am a law professor.

Citigirl,
An answer to my question about the phone call to Maura late afternoon or early evening on Monday, February 9th would be nice. You don't have to answer, if you don't want to, obviously.
An answer, even if it's a refusal, is better than silence.

In my writing the slang word, "sicko" meaning deranged, psychotic, morbidly obsessed was not directed at any one in particular. It is not any more "inflammatory" than what has been written and surmised here about "Maura's State of Mind" prior to her disappearance.

I answered this question earlier today by explaining this is a project for all people interested in finding missing people to get behind as it may well take an act of Congress to change the law. People have a right to move on in their lives and the purpose of this legislation would be to get a yes or no answer to whether anyone is using the SSN. Please explain to me why you believe this is a bad idea?

My first presentation of this idea was to have the family of the missing person ask the FBI to run the check because they can get that information the same day they ask for it.

BTW, I've already started a draft of the proposed bill and all we'll need once I get it done is to find a representative in Congress or a senator to introduce it in the next session.

Wowser,
Now that I've had some time to reconsider the remark I made about munching on a chocolate chip cookie while I sit staring at my Google Satellite view of the area looking for possible places to search for a body, I'll admit that was over the top and I apologize.

Wowser,
I think you live in the area. If so, do you know if any searches were conducted along South Landaff Rd. It cuts up the hill from the 112 just past the bridge where the 112 crosses the Ammonoosuc River. The road rises 200 feet over a pretty short distance and runs alongside Dearth Brook. This is on the north side of the river.

Shack,
I don't believe I'm deranged although I'll cop to eccentric. Not psychotic. Obsessed with solving this case? Yes. Morbid? I suppose from time to time. A little twisted? Yeah, that too.
Understand that many many times I've eaten lunch while studying 8x10 glossy color autopsy photos that would cause a lot of people to faint or wretch. Same thing with bloody crime scene photos. Did I get off on looking at stuff like that? No. Why did I do it? Because I believe in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and the Rule of Law. I believe that every human being is a mixture of good and bad and every human being is entitled to a chance at redemption. I believe in the presumption of innocence, placing the burden of proof on the prosecution, and requiring the prosecution to prove its case beyond a reasonable doubt.
Most of all I believe that the criminal defense attorney is liberty's last guardian because when we do our job right, we make the police and the prosecution stay honest and work hard. We keep the legal system honest when we do our job and when it falls apart, it's usually because we haven't done our job.
Most people think we're scum because they can't imagine themselves ever needing one of us. But several hundred innocent people have been freed from prison and a few from death row due to post-conviction DNA testing. Innocent people get convicted. Accept it. It's a reality. If it can happen to anyone, it can happen to you or someone you care about. If it does, you'll need someone like me who cares about what happens to you. Someone who will fight for you and never give up until he or she finds the key that will set you free. That's why I looked at thousands of disgusting and disturbing photos. Did it damage me? You betcha. You can't spend 30 years looking at the devil's handiwork and not be damaged.
I'm trying to apply all of the knowledge and experience that I've gained to solving this case. It's a form of pennance for me, in a way.
I'm not trying to offend others and most of the time I'm not even aware of the possibility that some of my remarks may be regarded as offensive.

One last point: Maura's state of mind is relevant for one reason only. If I know why she went north, I can figure out what happened to her because I don't believe there's a snowball's chance in hell that she got into a car with a stranger who killed her.
