All this time I was trying in a roundabout way to question if Maura went into the woods (not to get away from the law specifically, not caring about embankments, etc.) but looking for a place where she would not be found that night, to drink, and to not survive the night. I'm sorry to voice this painful possibility --- but from reported facts she seemed to be at times extremely distraught. Everything else is possible too, but reading about her stresses and behavior I keep thinking about "the last straw".

It might not have been a camp it might have been a house that was small enough to be called a camp! I agree with you that a man might have seen something that he should not have seen which lead to his death! One thing bothers me and that is the Chalet Shaffer in Woodsville was burned down by a new heater that was just installed and the person who owned that sports bar left in kind of a hurry. Another thing that bothers me is that the person that owned Gary's Fuel and Linda's One Stop started selling off everthing he owned right after 2004 and he left Woodsville and moved to Las Vegas before he had sold everything he owned and seemed to be in a hurry. Another thing that seems to bother me is that Jet Star started a junkyard around 2004 and put in a levy of sorts below the junkyard and then the town shut that junkyard down after jetstar put in all the money and time to put in all that dirt to state spec's but they didn't seem to put up much of a fight when told to shut down the junk yard by the town. Another thing that bothers me is that person just had another house burn thats like house number 14 that has burned and the insurance keeps on paying, seems odd that one person can have that many fires in a lifetime! It seems odd that the vegetable stand on Rt 25 closed it's doors around 2004. Just to name a few people and places that just seemed to either close up shop or move away after 2004 and they all seem connected in one way or another. Maybe I have a vivid imagination and maybe I am way off but these people seemed to scatter after 2004 when the pressure was put on the town of Haverhill. |

Does Casella's in Bethlehem take junk cars?

According to news reports, Vasi remembers almost nothing about the time surrounding his injury. If he had prior experience car surfing, it wasn't mentioned. If he was walking alone, his companion(s) didn't help him. |
|
What if, a day or two after Vasi was hit, Maura or someone close to her called the ICU at Baystate and, impersonating a member of Vasi's family, inquired about Vasi's exact condition?
Would this be significant? |

This is a possibility. I believe that was the initial working theory from police according to the MM website for several reasons. I think that there is a good possibility that she is close to where the car was located and poor searching has "cleared" certain areas. One of the things I have read is that family and “helpers” have so riled up the locals that getting permission to search those areas again would probably be difficult. I wish we knew more about what areas where searched and the quality of the searches but I have not heard any of this information. Bill |

I know the places you speak of. I feel you and I should chat privately sometime. |

Judged: 1 1 1 As far as tracks are concerned, much like the old joke which asks if a bear does something in the woods will anyone haer him, if nobody was looking for tracks near the river the next snowfall would have quickly filled them in.

There were unusually high snowbanks the winter of 2004, frozen and packed in place, if Mauras car hit, I believe it would have been a solid stop! There was a light dusting of snow and warming temperatures that night, a few days after a full moon.
BeagleBart, Thank you for continually asking questions. |

There is a trail system that runs right through and around that area that is open for PUBLIC use---I use it all the time with the ATV in good weather and snowmobile in the winter--I've walked it many times with my dog as well. I wasn't present at any of the searches, but no one has ever bothered me while riding or walking. On 112 there really are not many houses--in Mt Lakes there are more but on most days, there are not many people there as it is more of a "2nd home" community and not the primary residence for a lot of the people. During the searches, I was never approached if anyone could search my yard or the woods surrounding it. |

Philip, I was under the impression that there was a track meet in Providence at some point that she ran in while at UMass--possible vs. Brown Univ. I don't have a date though but will continue to search. |

I agree, for a week or two immediately prior to the disappearance (right around January 24th actually) the temperatures were BRUTALLY cold---10 below during the day on a couple of days---that would've made the trees impossible to hit through the snowbank. |
With the temperatures that low, I wonder how hard was the surface of the snow that had been on the ground? My thought is this: I know that very hard frozen snow can be solid enough for someone to walk on without necessarily breaking through. Maura was not a heavy girl, and she wasn't wearing heavy boots or shoes. Does anyone think it could have been possible for her to walk on hard-surfaced snow for at least a short distance? If so, there may well have been no tracks.
