Just got an idea..... Since "the phone call that upset Maura" was at UMass IN MASSACHUSETTS, and the FBI were doing interviews of family and friends IN MASSACHUSETTS (and IIRC not working in NH), I wonder if the FBI did the investigation of that mystery call????? I'd like to think so.
Due to the FBI involvement with MA, does it then make sense that all crucial information such as mysterious caller, ATM videos, witnesses seeing her Sunday morning and Monday evening are so on the hush hush? These things can not possibly be unimportant, anyone with half a brain knows that. I speculate these are being kept secret because they are crucial components of the case.

Maybe as some posters said, the answer does lie in Amherst. I don't know. Absolutely no facts in this speculation, just memory of posts... It was recently reposted that NH LE didn't use help from the FBI, IIRC, and that the FBI did the interviews with family and friends in Massachusetts (and, who knows, the surrounding area?). I'm just guessing the FBI, in addition to the UMass police, checked out anything to do with UMass. That mystery phone call I hope included.

You try to be crafty with your twisting of words and name calling, but the truth is if anyone goes back and reads the posts you so thoughtfully provided, they will see you are wrong. My theories in the beginning were a reaction to many of the twists and turns that others were making. I wanted to throw something out there and see why people thought it wasn't the case. I wanted to be hit hard with disagreement, not have everyone agree with me. If I recall, only you (from Tampa) and one other poster made attempts to insult me, by going into your own specualtions about my personal life. I've never claimed to KNOW any information that I didn't. I certainly don't believe that I would solve this case. I never did. I was just extremely curious for one reason or another. There are enough people playing the role of detective around here better than I ever could. Sometimes I like to pose questions to others, to perpetuate ideas. Sometimes I like to call out discussion that appears rhetorical, or appears to have some kind of alterior motive. That being said, I do believe there is a consipiracy to withhold information in this case, and I believe that there is a difference between those who want to solve this mystery and those who have the means and information to solve this mystery. That's all. That's it. And that's where I am coming from. I may be a dweeb, but I've never watched National Treasure and I have no idea how that movie would indicate one's dweebiness. My original moniker "Mastermind" was in tribute to an old board game where you used deductive reasoning to break a code. I just thought it an appropriate name since that is supposed to be the name of the game here. But at the point I realized that it wasn't, I switched my name to "propaganda firetruck" because it seemed more appropriate. Today, I am "holy roller" because I became enlightened in a cave and am now practicing voodoo full-time, and posting on this most ridiculous of forums part-time. Good day.
Good morning.
Without a doubt, and quite seriously, you appear to be a genius. Admittedly, I can't keep up with you...nor do I have the specific knowledge of 5 years behind me and the ability to devote countless hours to this endeavor.

While I completely admire your abilities to develop theories, the presentation can be confusing to those of us who may be considerably less gifted.

There must be a way to simplify...rule out some theories entirely and move ahead.

I am sorry to have been frustrated...but I never intend to be cruel.

Peri, too, has gifts that I probably cannot understand. My apologies are extended to her, as well.

It's very interesting....from observation...that the NAME of a poster can influence one's reaction and response to the content of the post.

It is actually less confusing and more comfortable to know what one is dealing with....

It's true that the FBI is not exactly effusive and gossipy, so one never knows. I suspect that, as people have said, the investigating authorities know A LOT MORE than they've been letting on. And that's as it should be.

Actually, on topic.
Nice to sort out some of the confusion with the admission of someone posting under so many different monikers....though each representing a consistently presented persona.

Lookin4AMoose,

Is my timeline now correct? I adjusted it according to your message. I didn't realize that the UMass track coach helped her get into UMass on what must have been short notice. Odd that that she later denied Maura ever was on the team, isn't it?

Maura started at WP in the fall of 2000 and completed her first year at the end of the spring semester 2001. Her older sister, Julie, and Billy graduated and received their commissions about 3 months before 9/11.

Maura withdrew from WP before the end of the fall 2001 semester and enrolled at UMass at the beginning of the spring semester 2002.

She switched her major to Nursing at the beginning of the fall semester 2002, and she had completed three semesters in the Nursing program at the beginning of the spring semester 2004.

I've mentioned before that lots of people struggled mentally and emotionally during the fall of 2001 in the aftermath of 9/11 and I can't shake the feeling that Maura's invitation to leave WP may have had something to do with her reaction aggravated by fear for Julie's and Billy's safety. The war drums were beating and she would have expected them to be sent off to war.

For him in particular to remark "the people who think they're the most perceptive are usually the most close-minded" is irony at its best.

Yes, he/she is, once again, using someone else's screen name.

Gutless enough, that he can't post under one of his own, but has to post under someone else's.

One of the most bizarre things about this case is the statement from campus police that the person who called Maura at Melville Hall early Friday morning from a campus phone had "moved on." The person who called her must have known her very well because he or she not only knew she was working, he or she also knew the right number to dial to ring the phone at the desk she was monitoring. Given her penchant for secrecy, I think it's unlikely that very many people, including her friends, knew where she was and how to reach her. Also, the call was after midnight. At first, I thought that "moved on" meant the person no longer was a student and had not been located. But that doesn't make sense because the call must have traced long before the spring semester ended. Then I wondered if the person was special to her and after a lover's tiff during the call, they eloped, ran away, or "moved on" together.

Could this be what happened? Did the police deliberately not reveal the caller's identity to protect his and Maura's right to privacy?

If so, it seems odd that the NHSP would later claim a 75% chance that Maura was murdered and it was investigating the case as a possible homicide.

Is it possible that LE identified the caller and interviewed him and he told them that he was having an affair with Maura and he called her to end it? Did he have an alibi that checked out? Could LE have decided that the best way to refer to the call in public was to say the caller "moved on," meaning he ended the relationship? Was this characterization of the call motivated by a desire to protect his privacy? Was he married?

Could this be the reason why the name of the art gallery has been such a secret? There is an art gallery located in the SW dorms and I believe campus phones are located in common areas, perhaps close to, if not in the gallery.

Reactions??????????

Detective Columbo,

I remember reading about that case.

I also came across another case in North Woodstock within the past two years. A woman was found deceased outside of a bar. It was initially thought she my have fallen and hit her head but upon the release of the restults of the autopsy an impression of the sole of boot was found on her chest.

A thought regarding Maura lookalikes that have been "ruled out."

If Maura was taken in by a group of people with whom she may have shared her life story and desire to start a new life, isn't it possible that they may have responded to questions from investigators by saying that the Maura lookalike had been a member of their community for many years and therefore couldn't be Maura?
