Holy crap Mason.
Talk like this will not stand you in good steed with most of the posters here.
You are correct, but correct has little to do with many of what the posters here want.

Yeah, I know.

But I'm the designated bad boy who eventually offends everyone here.

If some of the cops I've dealt with in the past read my remarks, they would die from shock or laughter.

Also while I am at it.

I think New Hampshire is a beautful place and I have always wanted to visit in the fall. However, I DO think they need to clean up the criminals. Just like I think just about all of Eastern WA neesd to do the same. Vancouver - canada while we are it too. Beautiful places but crime is crime and I don't care how beautiful a place is - keep it that way and criminals out. The locals can do it too - they ban together and make sure the rift raft leaves. I know of two towns in WA that have done just that. I'm thankfull too.

Well stated.
In Fred Murray's mind and heart, however, and according to the letters he's written to NH authorities, he believes they might have "...searched more quickly and thoroughly."

While it is unfortunate that his reactions as a distraught father likely interfered with his relationship with authorities...it is also a shame if has to consider the impact of one's emotions/anger/grief/hysteria under these circumstances.
We hope that professionalism has prevailed.

1. Is this my imagination, or were we told recently that "the cruise control was on" in the Saturn? First of all, this might not be be true. But if it is, doesn't the cruise control reset after the vehicle's turned off? If not... here comes the speculation... usually a person uses cruise control on the highway. If Maura was aware her car was running improperly and was advised she didn't go over, say, 50 MPH, maybe this shows she was on the highway on her way up north.(There's no way she could've been in Woodsville at 7-7:30 if she took the slower back roads, in my experience.) OR -- the other reason people set cruise control is if they don't want to be stopped (open container, etc.), and they're on a "back" state (or regular) road, they'd set the cruise for, say, 35 MPH, just to avoid being stopped...

2. Whitewash comes from that area, knows the people as people, by name, through interacting with them, and not just as a NH-LE-group. In my opinion, Whitewash has turned out to have more correct information than we could ever get. I'm grateful she cares enough to pursue this, in spite of criticism! And (sorry, Whitewash!), her fabulous photographs are definitely better than her quick forum-posting writing!!!

3. I don't think anyone responded to my long post from a few days ago. So, does anyone think there was someone at Maura's part-time art gallery job that she wanted to see on the Sunday before she left? She left there just 6 hours before she talked to her dad and apparently started doing computer searches for a getaway place...

4. Anyone agree that since Maura told everyone she needed to be excused from classes and work for a week that there was no way she could return to campus before that week was (approx.) up?(She'd have to explain why she was back early, etc.)

5. Anyone think that her final decision to leave was made after 2PM Sunday afternoon, after her dad left to return to Bridgeport, and after she arrived for her art gallery job, as usual?

6. Anyone think that her plans to leave began to accelerate after she talked to her dad at 11PM-11:20PM Sunday night? That seemed to be the time after which the computer searches for destinations, emails to profs, and phone calls took place. Other loose ends were tied up on Monday before she left. WHAT HAPPENED TO MAKE MAURA PUT INTO ACTION A DECISION TO TIE THINGS UP AND GO UP NORTH? If that's what happened...

Something just occured to me?????????

White Wash - not to pick on you... I swear a light bulb just went on. Then again I am do believe in conspiracty theories.

Do you work for the local police department?
or
Are you married to someone on the force - or a realative

I so, I can see your point. Dont agree - but we all protect our own.. Just like Fred wanting answers about his daughter

Maybe this is old news - or - I am off base.. I swear I can see that from reading back. I had to go back a couple of months -.. maybe its a full moon. I dunno

Sorry logic song......... I know that was not directed to me.. However,I only use commas - when I send something at work. I type like I am just trying to talk really quick. That won't change anytime soon either

It also makes me wonder (this will be controversial) if he was between shifts in Bridgeport, CT and arrived in Amherst, MA (by 4:30PM Monday) to drive in tandem with Maura for some reason, like getting rid of the Saturn?.(Was the Saturn used by some driver and involved in the Petrit Vasi hit and run?)
If the Saturn, driven by someone other than Maura or Fred, hit Vasi, then why would Fred necessarily have driven in tandem to Haverhill? Why not someone else, such as the person who was driving the Saturn when, and if, the Saturn hit Vasi? Or why drive in tandem with Maura at all? Why not in tandem with someone else? Maybe two people transported the Saturn to Haverhill - the Vasi hit-and-run driver and someone else, neither of them Fred or Maura? Or how about if a tow truck was used to transport the Saturn north?

Would it be possible to plan to make a small crash people would notice from their homes but not have to personally attend to? And then the "driver" pretends to have already called AAA, but in reality has previously arranged for a tow truck, maybe not even a licensed one, to show up very soon after to take the car to a scrap yard for crushing? Making it look like someone skidded off the road, called a tow truck, and police didn't even need to be called. Or it was over when they arrived?

What if the tow truck that was supposed to show up was the one that hauled it there from Amherst? Dropped it off a short distance from where it "crashed," then showed up to haul it away, not planning on the PD showing up before the unofficial tow truck got there? Because the PD was busy doing something else?

What if the timing didn't work out and the real police and fire, etc. showed up earlier than expected and if the Saturn's there, and was already seen up close by the bus driver, then what role would be played by Maura? If she were even there at that point?

It feels like there are some logic gaps in this scenario, but maybe it's something someone can iron out.

Very true... If the Saturn hit Vasi, then why not just ditch it 10-30 miles away, report it as stolen, and that's that? That would be way simpler, right? Oh yeah. There would be no evidence that it was stolen like fingerprints, clothing fibres, forced entry, stuff like that. So reporting it stolen is out. And if you couldn't report it as stolen, and wanted to ditch it, what would you do? Not sure.

Why stage the crash at all in Haverhill? Why not just have the Saturn taken/towed to the cah crusha? Someone in the area specific to the need to crush the Saturn? Better than taking it to Jerome Ave?

With regard to mcsmom, I believe it's always appropriate to question a reporter about possible bias or prejudice that may have affected the reporter's objectivity. Inquiries of that nature should be expected and should have been asked of Judith Miller, the New York Times reporter who vigorously beat the administration's war drum with false information about WMDs in Iraq provided by the administration.

White Wash apparently secured an interview that no one else was able to get and Chief Williams disclosed information that he had no obligation to disclose and he probably should not have disclosed it. Nevertheless, he did and it does not appear that he was coerced, so I do not blame White Wash for publishing what he had to say.

She has been defending the police since the beginning, so I know she is biased in their favor. However, as I read through her article, it seems to me that she was reporting what she was told, so I think the credibility issue relates to whether the reader believes Chief Williams's account of what the HPD did.

Unless he was making stuff up, which is possible, I am inclined to believe that he was recounting what his officers did and when they did it based on his review of the reports in the file. I don't see much opinion or editorializing by Chief Williams or White Wash. And, for me, this distinguishes what White Was did from what Judith Miller did.

I suspect Chief Williams wanted to defend his department because it had been under heavy and persistent attack to the point that residents of Haverhill were losing confidence in the department's professionalism. He certainly had a motive to make stuff up, but that doesn't mean that he did. Would he have felt a need to defend his department, but for Fred Murray's criticism? Might one credibly say that Fred Murray invited the response?

As we like to say around here, the message speaks for itself. Since the information is a straight-forward recitation of facts by time and date, I doubt that he did.

Well, could be that if you wanted a car crushed and you brought it to a location too close to Amherst, and if LE was looking for someone who might bring in a car that might have hit Vasi, and if LE were canvasing all the car crushers within a certain radius of Amherst, then maybe you'd want to get the car crushed at some place farther away?

Please remember that ditching the Saturn does not necessarily have to involve Maura or anyone in her family. It could have been done by someone else, maybe a recent driver of the Saturn or someone like that?

It seems unlikely that, if the Saturn hit Vasi, Maura was the driver because she was a work.

But if Maura knew about the damage to the Saturn from a possible Vasi hit, which she presumably would have, then why wouldn't she report it to the police? Is it possible that IF Maura reported the Saturn's damage to the police, that the police would have ended up arresting Maura as the driver? Regardless of what she said? If so, then could the Saturn have been driven by someone very close to Maura?

Sure, Maura might have wanted to protect someone close to her, but at the expense of jail time? Would someone very close to Maura have harmed her so they, as a hit-and-run driver, would not face a trial or jail time?
