Hi Dawn, here's a guess Maura may have sat on the passenger side after getting out of the car to talk to Atwood, because the door on the driver side was too close to the snowbank to wedge herself back in again behind the wheel. Also it seems "she" checked both the front and back seats as the interior lights flashed on and off looking for items to take/leave. As we know some items were left on the seats that had been pulled out or left there on the trip--the gloves, the insurance form, etc. Not sure how much Maura's Samsung phone flashed with its red light, I know both my phone and my blackberry flash a lot as does the security system alarm light on my dashboard. Anyway sitting on the passenger side was easier because the doors on that side were not blocked by the snowbank, whoever it was. |

Judged: 1 Story Created: Mar 8, 2009 at 7:21 PM EDT Story Updated: Mar 8, 2009 at 7:21 PM EDT WASHINGTON (Reuters)- Researchers and advocates have been invited to a White house ceremony Monday at which President Barack Obama is expected to lift eight years of restrictions on embryonic stem cell research -- but it will be months before the research field can take off, experts say. The National Institutes of Health will have to write detailed guidelines on when and how federal dollars can be spent on research involving human embryos, and may be asked to provide a larger ethical framework on their use. And laws are still on the books that limit the use of federal money to actually make the powerful stem cells, because they must be taken from human embryos. So federal research money can be used only to work with cells that were made using other sources of funds. Nonetheless, researchers are delighted. "Hallelujah! This marks the end of a long and repressive chapter in scientific history. It's the stem-cell 'emancipation proclamation'," said Dr. Robert Lanza of Massachusetts-based Advanced Cell Technology, a stem cell company. "I really hope this is the end of this political football game," agreed Michael West, who once headed ACT and Geron Inc and who now is chief executive officer of California-based biotech BioTime. Stem cells are primitive, long-living cells that are the source of all other cells in the body. When taken from days-old embryos they are virtually immortal, and can give rise to all the other cells and tissues in the body. Supporters say they can transform medicine and have been working to use them to repair severed spinal cords, regenerate the brain cells lost in Parkinson's and restore the tissue destroyed by juvenile diabetes. RESEARCH MAINSTAY But federal funding is the mainstay of medical research in the United States, especially for early-stage, experimental work. And soon after he took office in 2001, then-President George W. Bush restricted the use of federal money to work with human embryonic stem cells. A few institutes, including at Harvard and Stanford universities, set up fully separate operations so their researchers could legally work with embryonic stem cells and also receive federal funding for their other work. But most researchers chafed under the restrictions as they found the few batches of legally available stem cells could not fill their needs. Dr. Douglas Melton, co-director of the Harvard Stem Cell Institute, noted that the process of getting federal funding itself is time-consuming but said his group will seek the cash alongside its other sources of money. "The removal of this barrier that has stood in our way for eight years will open important new areas of research, and help in moving the field forward more rapidly," Melton said. Although support for federal funding of human stem cell research crosses political and philosophical boundaries, opponents remain. "President Obama remains obsessed with killing human embryos for experimentation at taxpayer expense," Congressman Chris Smith, a New Jersey Republican who helps chair the House Pro-Life Caucus, said in a statement. "Taxpayer dollars should not aid the destruction of innocent human life," said House Republican Leader John Boehner, an Ohio Republican.(Editing by Anthony Boadle) above from: I forget, it's from somewhere... |

I was brining up Bundy - as an example of a serial killer. Just like Fred brought up one also from WA state. To compare - make educated analysis. Sure sounds like another one we all know of too - helps in profiling a serial killer. The focus is on Maura - and lookint at MO's of serial killers is obviously worth investigating. Done with commenting on this. It obviously is relevant to look at other serial killers. |

Judged: 1 I don't have to tell any of you that serial killers are extremely disturbed because that's obvious. I've spent hours talking to clients who were serial killers and, yes, I wanted to climb inside their heads and understand why. I listened to their stories and I will take their stories with me to the grave. Their stories are frightening, terrifying, disturbing, and disgusting. Most of all, I found them to be profoundly disorienting and everlastingly haunting because I cannot forget them. One of the main reasons I gave up practicing law was that I was too damaged to continue. I needed to get back in touch with normal people and shake off the nightmare visions the way a soaked dog shakes off water. Some things are best left unknown. |
||||
Also......... I should mention - on the west we are very sensitive right now about serial killers or killers who go on a spree. We have an execution on Friday..... Reminds you again..
these are real people - sisters, daughters nieces, friends and loved ones.. they don't deserve it. not just a number out of a line up of other victims. |

Dawn, it was only 7 months, assuming I'm right. That's bad enough, I know. Just thought I'd point it out. Fred |

Mason, this is more for you if you hadn't seen it as yet. |

I was thinking about this during dinner (how appetizing...) and the only thing I can come up with about the missing poster listing what she "may have" been wearing has to do with the twin facts that the family HASN'T seen the ATM/liquor video (whichever one it is; I should know better than to post after a dinner full of wine) and the fact that whichever video exists is security video and thus black and white and of low quality. So there's probably no way to tell for sure what she was wearing. Since I can't post it here, in a while (have to wash the dishes, ugh) I will post the most recent missing poster to the other forum. The updated one when the reward was $75,000. It's the most current one I have, anyway. As for the two facts, "Maura is gone and her father's car was found in NH" that about sums it up right there, doesn't it. And it's truly, truly frustrating. I think it's as frustrating for the family and investigators as it is for us. Probably more so. Ok, dishes. More later. |

I'm not interested in tracking Nicholaou's trail of death and never ending heartbreak. I'm just trying to figure out if he might have abducted and killed Maura. I can't eliminate that possibility based on what I've found out about him and what I know about serial killers in general. I cannot even say for certain that he was the Connecticut River Valley Killer, although I believe he was. All I want to know right now is whether he was in the area when Maura disappeared. I'll leave that to LE to figure out. Fred |
