Because you expect us to believe that unless it's in quotation marks, it's not a fact? Nope, sorry. Not happening. It MAY be sloppy reporting, but the fact that it appeared twice in two separate outlets leads me to believe that it was more of a case of sloppy speaking on his part. If someone says "I worked with the Taunton police department" and doesn't elaborate that it was as a civilian, and he's a relatively intelligent person with an IQ at least in the double digits, which by all accounts Atwood seems to be, he is IMO leaving the door open and hoping that people will walk through it.
Not gonna convince me on this, WW. Sorry.

I agree, keep it vague and hope that people will interpret it as you being a "real police officer".

We do. More than less. We live in a town of approx. 5,000, like so many towns in MA, where there is a reasonable expectation and delivery of community, safety and lifestyle. Zoning assures some homogeneity, which also translates into communities of likeminded people.

Living and working in major cities has been no less disappointing.

I don't dwell on crime.

I have absorbed some of this honest feedback from people who seem to represent themselves and others authentically. I feel very badly for Pike. Bullying is inexcusable; it is a shame that he felt compelled to leave.

I apologize to you Paris about the Twilight Zone theme song. I always thought it was used as a metaphor for the denigrating of SBD and the locals. Now you say he actually hummed it. I can easily imagine this occurring - a wide eyed local comes running up to SBD stating "she just disappeared into thin air" and SBD starts humming this tune. Rather appropriate if you consider the Betty and Barney Hill event which occurred on a rural NH road on 9/19/61. A road just like Rte 112.

I became friends with a young man in Vermont who told me Fred came to their door, talked with his parents and himself to help get the word out and find what they knew. He said Fred was polite, brief and it was not a bother to them at all. He was part of the forum for awhile until he saw that it went around and around, going nowhere. I don't know what name he used but he's on my buddy list and we chat from time to time.

Thanks Suzanne for understanding that. I felt bad for offending you and anyone else who didn't get my drift. You know, his x had said maybe Maura was afraid of him because he's a big man....and he is. But there's room to say that Maura just walked up the road waiting on the other alleged tow truck that some woman was going to call for her. I read this in the first days, in the news and then never saw referrence to it again. Only Helena and one other person recall this too. Does anyone else?

Wowzer, i too was a lurker (a silent observer, a fly on the wall) on Helena's forum and just reading your post brought back such bad memories of that forum. If a poster did not adhere to the party line they were soundly thrashed, ganged up on. They were made to feel that they were somehow complicit in Maura's disappearing. That forum was a classic example of group psychosis. It still leaves me with bad taste in my mouth.

Beth was contacted by Helena in the earliest days to come help with the forum, the so called FIT, investigators, sluethers, etc. Helena counted on Silkyboxer for many things, like searches, behind the scene stuff, what have you. Frank highly esteemed her too and has said he has a special place for her in his prayer box.
Too bad Beth died, so much only she herself knew, unless her parents turned her notes, laptops, etc over to police. Beth kept most things to herself and only explained to me this one thing. The forum was mostly a place for PM's and putting ideas out there for people to ponder. If this is not true, I couldn't tell ya.

There have been many misconceptions of this forum but among the many, I never felt it was important to correct whomever was peeling an orange while watching the scene. It seemed silly given the overall tone.

Paris, I do remember that someone was going to call for Maura so I believe when she said AAA had been notified that may have been correct.

it is what it is.
it's also good that women like you and Wowzer have given voices to what you witnessed. i can't really imagine either of you having to or wanting to lurk...or be anything less than part of the conversation.
there was ownership. ownership strayed from purpose...if, indeed, the purpose was/is to "find Maura".
"getting back on track" is an expression i've heard many times. everything that happens here is very much "on track".
