am i missing a step in your logic?

if Maura locked her car with her keys
she likely kept the keys on her person
and, therefore, the keys are with Maura
and not necessarily in the possession of a tow truck driver

Not that Weeper has to tell anybody anything. But he has laid things to rest many times. He surely knows how hard we try to help himself and anyone else looking into MMM. He would have all the info and it would not be based on heresay. Maybe someone else on the team, Det C.....maybe they could become active on Advocates forum, since Topix can be laughable at best. They more or less started this as far as I know and I imagine they expect to finish this, as well.
I don't trust Weeper or Columbo, so I won't ever ask for their input to solve an unsettled question.

I asked for a certified copy of the employer's records because I can examine them and determine their authenticity.

I agree the keys could be anywhere, if not w/Maura. I was just thinking that she must have held possesion of them, Snowy.

Let's say Maura asked someone to take/tow her car, destination unknown. Yet she was around to open it, retrieve things, leave the towel as an in your face thing to someone. And then almost seen by the person with the dog. I was thinking onthose lines at the time.

Right. It should be obvious to anyone that has posted here for awhile and followed these forums that they were hired to detract suspicion from the most obvious of suspects.

Why would Maura ask for her car to be towed? More likely that a tow truck driver was hired by someone responsible for her disappearance.

Even if we find the keys. I'm not so sure they will provide us with more detailed information. A descrption would be great for the search teams.

WW ~
While the car was left at Lavoie's? Did they notice anyone trying to break in - get items out of the car? Maybe something that would be valuable to a person but not valuable in a monitary way? Did this take place?- feel like beagle asking like that.. lol

sorry if i've misunderstood...
agree that keys could be anywhere, to include the possession of a tow truck driver.
with certain model cars, keys cannot be removed unless the car is in a certain gear/a button pushed, and/or depending on whether it is standard/automatic.
auto lock by remote or manual lock are also considerations.
again, sorry if i missed these details if previously discussed.

I wonder if they thought the same thing, that the Saturn was towed.
For me, the towel in the tailpipe is the most bizarre fact in this bizarre case. I can't recall where I read this, but I remember reading that Fred Murray told Maura to stuff the towel in the tailpipe because the exhaust pipe was emitting so much smoke that police likely would pull her over unless she stuffed the towel in the pipe. Could be that Billy said this to a reporter.

Anyway, a towel will either stall the engine or the exhaust will blow the towel out of the pipe, so the advice would have been bogus, if given.

I've continued to ask auto enthusiasts in western Kentucky about this curious matter and I have yet to hear anyone say that it's customary to stuff anything in an exhaust pipe when you're towing a car the usual way with the front end elevated so the tires aren't in contact with the ground, or pulling the car with a tow rope or chain, in which case, all 4 wheels remain in contact with the ground.

I've talked to more than 20 people and all of them think the idea is nuts. They've told me that, if anyone noticed a towel sticking out of an exhaust pipe (and who would notice it, they ask), they wouldn't know what it meant and would ignore it.

under normal circumstances, why wouldn't she request/require a tow?

Has anyone given any thought to whether it would be cheaper to repair the #3 cylinder's burned exhaust valve versus buying a "new" car (i.e., pre-owned)?

hard to venture an opinion...unknowns include the overall reliability and previous maintenance of the vehicle...and whether the investment to repair is offset by expected road-worthiness, body condition,# of miles....but you know this stuff.

Here's the reference to the rag in the tailpipe.

"Rag in the tailpipe
Some have speculated the rag found stuffed in the tailpipe of the black 1996 Saturn Maura crashed in Haverhill indicated either a suicide try by carbon monoxide or a predator's ploy to make the car stall.

But Mike Lavoie of Lavoie's Auto Care Center in Haverhill, who towed the Saturn that night, said he later spoke with Maura's father, Fred Murray, about the rag. Lavoie said it couldn't have been used in that manner as part of a suicide attempt.

"Her father said he told her to put it in, that it would keep the car from smoking. It didn't run that well," Lavoie said."

How might your opinions of this case change, if you found out that the cause of Maura's meltdown was her finding out that the School of Nursing would not permit her to complete the semester unless she obtained a mechanically sound vehicle?

Right, and if the keys were on a path or something heading into the forest, we might think Maura dropped them in haste or something....but if they are found in the trees, right where the red truck was, we could then wonder if an abduction was going on or she just dropped them there in the dark. Does a Saturn have automatic locks, so that if you lock one door, they all lock? Someone was riffling through the vehicle and most thought it was "Maura." I agree it could have been a person standing in as she for appearances sake.
