How might your opinions of this case change, if you found out that Maura called her dad and told him the news and he promised to drive up Saturday morning and take her car shopping, which he did, but he didn't buy her a car? I've read somewhere that Maura wanted to confront her dad about something and discussed that with her friends at Alfieri's dorm-room party. They told her to wait until after he woke up. She decided to go anyway and wrecked his car. Suppose she wanted to confront her dad about him, in effect, forcing her to withdraw from school by not following through on his promise? Could she have deliberately wrecked his Corolla by taking the the left-turn too fast? Maybe she was just upset and possibly crying when she made the left-turn? What might the meeting in the motel room have been like, under either scenario? Could wrecking his car have eliminated any possibility for her to get another car? Did she leave campus because she figured her semester likely was over for all practical purposes? Could they have argued again during the telephone conversation on Sunday night? Might Fred Murray have followed her into New Hampshire without her knowledge? What might have happened, if he saw her wreck the Saturn and he picked her up? Could it have been an explosive argument to end all arguments?

How might your answer change if both were under the influence of alcohol at the time?

Considering that Maura had worked herself to the bone working two jobs and still managed to get good grades, how do you think she might have felt about basically being forced to quit school?

Now consider how such an argument might have been even worse, if there had been a history of sexual abuse and Maura threatened to tell the police. What might have happened?

Beginning tomorrow, I will begin to sort through the statements. As always, each of you has an absolute right to your own thoughts and opinions. Respectfully, Frederick Leatherman

It would be good to know from these friends if this is what was said. That Maura was going to confront her dad and in return, they thought she ought to wait until morning.

The friends appear not to have wanted to say very much and they may not have believed that what the knew was relevant. Police also might have asked them to please not speak to the press.

The discussion invites paranoia and suspicion upon innocent volunteers (if they don't support "the right theory") as well as the most devious hoaxers who's only motive is their own sadistic entertainment - getting their jollies watching people form unfounded beliefs based upon what they believe are reactions to currently discussed issues. What is even more dumbfounding is when the reactions are not to sadistic hoaxers, but instead to innocent, honest volunteers whose only crimes are 1.) having the desire to help solve a tragic mystery and 2.) Supporting "the wrong theory." And I have seen a multitude of declarative or inquisitive statements by other posters targeting suspicion upon individuals completely disconnected from Maura's disappearance, even though impossible. For the past month perhaps, I've felt I could be of any use by pointing out facts while using discretion - and I can't do much of that in proportion to the overall unhappiness I see here. The most of the very little that I can do is maybe put a smile on someone's face somewhere by being silly. If at least one person is marginally happy, they are likely not feeling completely and horribly awful. So I hope Sophie Bean now understands this. I haven't come into many of these conversations because I am tremendously conflicted - but slightly more regretful then hopeful as a result of the recent discussions. I know that I have no idea if anyone is innocent or guilty, but I do know that some ideas should be looked at. However, I'm also very sensitive to the possibility that an innocent victim could be further victimized. Since I'm not completely sold on any solution - I see no reason to argue. Rather, I see reason to be as sensitive and diplomatic as possible in perusing all avenues. Thank you, I completely understand and I apologize for my short temper. Trying to introduce some levity into what has been increasingly a toxic, attack-plagued climate is a wonderful, wise tactic. I'm sorry, BF.

As a former member of the Varsity Swim Team of a university in the Big 10 Conference that ended each year ranked in the top 10 in the NCAA, I can say with a high degree of certainty that Maura could not have attended all of her classes and worked two part-time jobs AND still have had enough time to work-out with the UMass Women's Track Team. We worked out from 6-7:30 am and 3-5 pm every weekday, except Sunday. We were exhausted all the time and barely found time enough to study. I've never believed the hamstring-injury story. I also haven't believed the scholarship story. Each team has a limited number of scholarships to offer each year and with rare exceptions they are awarded to incoming freshmen. Transfer students usually are barred from competing for a year, if they competed for another university and have to prove themselves worthy of a scholarship before one is awarded. Why was Maura working two jobs, if she was awarded an academic scholarship? This is another example of Mr. Murray being less than candid, I think.

Picture Kate Markopoulos joining Maura and her dad for dinner Saturday night at the brew pub. Did they do what women sometimes do and excuse themselves from the table to go the Ladie's Room together?
Did Kate ask, "Maura, what car did your dad buy for you?"
Did Maura's dispirited answer lead to Kate and her friends later imploring her to confront her dad about her necessity for a functioning car?

Could Maura have possibly done anything more than she already had accomplished to get back into her father's good graces after being forced to leave West Point? Did he give her the malfunctioning Saturn as a passive aggressive act of continuing disapproval that crushed her, at least for awhile? Did a lifetime of submitting to her father's domination suddenly explode like Mt. Saint Helen's? What do you think his response might have been? If you believe he quit drinking, why do you think he took her to dinner at a brew pub? Was he testing his will to resist drinking. Some alcoholics do that. Most recovering alcoholics consider it too risky. If he had resumed drinking, how might that have affected his response, if Maura stood up to him for the first time in her life? Do you believe it's possible that he might have killed her without intending to do so? If so, how might he have attempted to cover-up what he did? Frederick Leatherman

Dawn wrote: Mason Was it ever discussed when Fred might come back to make the purchase? He told Maribeth Conway that he was going to return the following weekend and buy her a GEO Prizm she picked out. I don't know why he decided to wait a week, or why he thought the Prizm would still be available. I also don't know why Maura wouldn't have waited to get the new car before she decided to drive north into New Hampshire. I'll bet Maura never told Kate Markopoulos about the Prizm or Kate would have mentioned it. A possible explanation for placing the emphasis on Route 112 and some dirtbag abducting Maura would be to misdirect attention and cause her friends to believe that his failure to get her a car was irrelevant and under the guise of not victimizing the victim's family, her friends never mentioned the matter. Personally, I don't think he ever intended to get her a car or fix the Saturn and she knew it.

Being able to idenify is the first step in the solution Dawn, my comment was directed to Ben Franklin because of his gracious and wise post, and because I had been needlessly and wrongly short-tempered with Ben Franklin. This should not be assumed to mean that I have ignored and am not pursuing appropriate legal action against someone for threatening me with physical violence in a public forum. It does mean that I agree that vicious personal attacks will not ever help to find Maura.

Speaking for FireCat as well as myself, there is absolutely no sense, and certainly no legal sense, in which asking questions (vs stating something negative as a fact) is a "lie," an "attack," or "defamation." If it were true that asking a question were actually stating something known to be a lie, an attack, libel or slander, perhaps it would be a good idea to consider what's been asked in the last couple of days about Fred Murray.
