Not quite true. The web server (in this case the topix server) HAS to know the IP address associated with you personaly, not just the IP address of the ISP you are connected to.<quoted text>
As always BF has his act together and as someone else mentioned. I am no expert either but this much I am pretty certain. Your IP address only goes as far as the server (which by the way is probably the address listed in most cases also). You can't get any more information unless the company (almost always by court order) allows that information to be released. What you can do is tell if all the people who say they are repeatedly come from the same IP and ban that IP if you are trying to ban someone. You still don't know who that is at the IP, just that its the same IP.
Don't give personal information out over the internet but forget about someone identifing you from your IP. Unless you constantly use that same IP and have told lots of other about your personal information.
Bill (Not my real name by the way)
I've been doing this too long to give any information about myself out.

I'm leaving for the day. I hope we hear something from Det C and hope its positive.
Sorry, If I offended anyone - I know there are people who do care on here. Not going to name names - they know who they are. I do think some are here to defend their town - don't get that. If someone went missing by my house - I would want answers. That is fine their opinion. I think sometimes - people forget - this was a real person - a daughter - sister a niece.......... I just ask people to think of it if it was your family - I think the family would want to get the word out. They tried on AMW - denied. Tried to get FBI involved - denied.......... that is all I am trying to say... try to put yourself for one second in their shoes.. Even if - which I don't agree - she left on her own. Think how you would feel if your sister/brother/niece/nephew/fr iend/best friend/girlfriend/boyfriend - left and never said good bye. It would hurt. I don't think anyone can deny that. |

Judged: 2 2 2 Dawn, You are saying you would sue Mason because he called Fred a jerk? Ridiculous. Grow up. I'd like to see how far that lawsuit would get. I doubt if Fred wants to be revered or venerated as a victim, I think all Fred wants is to know where his daughter is. Maybe we can return to that pursuit soon. |

Judged: 2 1 1 You haven't noticed people being really edgy and tense on this forum lately? All sorts of bizarre accusations? Beagle arguing with himself? All sorts of name calling? Etc? It seems much more intense in the last week or so than it has been in several months. |

Judged: 1 Thank you for catching my post, FireCat. Clearly, what I describe below is NOT Advocator's intent. Specifically, someone took a 'screenshot' while I attempted to post when visiting a forum outside of Topix. This person, as moderator of his blog, then posted my captured IP address on that forum, as well as on Topix. He boasted about collecting the IP addresses of several other individuals whom he hoped to intimidate/harass, as well. Layers of security, along with the unique/dynamic nature of IP addresses are intended to be protective, although an ill-intended moderator can access a certain level of identifying information. Someone's INTENT to reveal personal information about another, and the ACTION he takes to violate the privacy of that individual reflects the sinister nature of that moderator. Further, the nearly complete social security number and the full birthdate of an individual was similarly posted by this same person. Outrageous, unacceptable and dangerous behavior. |

More accurately, I might say that folks have been reacting and responding to the manipulation and misrepresentations by some posters. This is not paranoia. |

Judged: 1 1 1 Hi Snowy - in what you describe I am sympathetic to your reaction. The quickest way to change your current IP number - if you are on DSL at home or dialup - is to disconnect and reconnect. Power off, power on. Remember there are more Internet users then IP numbers available, so after you stop using one - someone else will probably be leased that number fairly quickly to someone else. So don't let this guy bother you. His threats are idle. All you have to do is flip a switch and you have a different IP number. Meantime - whoever this person is - is stuck with 1 IP number for his blog and it is extremely easy to find out what it is. discovery:~# traceroute topix.com traceroute to topix.com (64.13.129.140) ctrl-c There is Topix IP number. In windows its called tracert. tracert topix.com http://kb.iu.edu/data/aihy.html So what's this guy going to do with the temporary IP numbers on his page? He's already told you who he is. It would be insane for him to try to compromise the security of your computer somehow. But to put this in perspective - even an experienced computer user like myself is clueless when it comes to those things. But even if he did or tried - it would be as if a guy walked up to you, handed you his biography, gave you his name and then walked up to your front door and tried to pick your lock while you are standing there. Its just a childish way to poke at people - but really amounts to not much. Hit the power button - yawn - hit it again - and he won't have it any more. You can test out if this causes your IP number to change if you look at this web site: http://www.myipnumber.com/ Tell him I said to stick that in his pipe and smoke it. |

Judged: 1 1 WOW. Thank you, immensely, for your kindness. By our discussion (!) yesterday, I was prompted to call the IT folks at my office...he brought me to tracert and explained how to read the result. Actually, it's straightforward. Solved. And, again, thank you, too. |

Suzanne and FireCat...it's interesting to know that you've allowed a lengthy discussion to take place about Mason without commenting until now. Your quest to "find Maura" is only interrupted by such game-playing... hardly productive. Keep it going, Ladies. |

Wait, what? First of all, I didn't comment on what I learned about Mason precisely because I didn't want to distract the conversation further from Maura by making it be about his identity for yet another post. Secondly, I only learned what I learned within the past few days. I alluded to it in a post to Mason, without mentioning specifics, because I was sympathetic to his situation but didn't want to mention specifics out of respect for his feelings. Thirdly, I learned what I learned about Fred Leatherman. Whether or not this person is Mason is not particularly my business at the moment. Which I believe I've mentioned, somewhere in the vicinity of that same post within the past week. In any case, I was making a specific effort to avoid contributing to anything that could be referred to as "game-playing." I guess this is yet another case of damned if I do, damned if I don't, because nothing I say is going to please some segments of the forum population--simply because it is I who is saying it. |

Judged: 1 Hi, FC ~ Suzanne alluded to information already known and shared between at least two parties...you and Suzanne)...which, in retrospect, might have put a halt to the lengthy conversation about Mason's identity. Either he was/wasn't or is/isn't a certain lawyer as he claimed to be. Dawn was caught in the middle of this...to the extent that she was attempting to verify his claim. And, now, we find Suzanne had this info. all along? I feel foolish for trying, as well. Perhaps there's been some miscommunication. Oh, well. |
