I believe that the UMass Amherst nursing program allowed and still allows relatively unconventional settings for clinicals, such as homeless shelters, batttered women's shelters, drug treatment programs, etc. These are sometimes set up on a unique, individualized basis. As has been pointed out before, though, it is assumed that Maura was not sufficiently advanced toward her degree to participate in clinicals like these.
Maura was just entering spring of her junior year. How advanced does one have to be? I'm not being a jerk, I'm asking seriously.

When and where did she say that? Because I honestly don't remember her doing so.
I think, but do not know, that Dawn is right about this. There sure seem to be two mutually exclusive answers about Norwood clinicals.

But even if Maura was doing clinicals in Norwood, how would it relate to her disappearance? Other than the obvious... she was abducted by someone from the Norwood area, or something like that?

...unless Maura did a clinical at Summerhill House, which is a home for expectant mothers. Summerhill House is considered an alternative to abortion and is probably part of the adoption pipeline.

I believe we are a community of souls summoned to work together for reasons we do not fully comprehend. The bright shiny object that captured our attention is the enduring mystery of what happened to Maura. As I have discovered, however, the path toward the solution is not smooth. We have obstacles to overcome and one of them is suspicion and distrust. Everyone has something positive to offer or they wouldn't stick around for very long. The whole is greater than the sum of its individual parts and by working together, instead of against each other, I believe we can transform our potential into something tangible that will include, but not be limited to, catalyzing LE's effort to solve the mystery of Maura's disappearance. Along the way we should take a moment every now and then to honor and thank others for their efforts.

i didn't miss this post the first time...and wanted to return to it.
thank you for your presence, your deep understanding of the problems, and extraordinary insight into seeking balance.
once again, i appreciate the tireless focus on Maura by many, while remaining personally grateful for so many teachers.

<quoted text>Moose (I hope it is okay to call you that) As far as I know, the family has no information regarding any fbi investigation, only that they investigated. Maura consistantly wore her hair up at the time. I only wish I knew more. I believe a big part of this investigation is jurisdiction. There was a case regarded as the Drega incident where 2 NH troopers, along with 2 others were murdered by Carl Drega in the late 1900s. Much of the errors in that tragic incident centered on lack of communication between agencies. Since then communications ha ve improved. Let us remember to communicate as best we can.

Frankly, since I have no idea who you are, not necessarily, no.
Agreed. Anyone can be anyone on a thread like this, but Dover is, I think, home to Raymond Ruddy, so I'd go on faith just a wee bit this time. But tentative faith, conditional faith. Could change my mind at any time faith.

Grateful for the post though and certainly wouldn't come out in a discouraging way.(Where Seldom is often herded along.)

Over and out, Faith.

Damn, what do we do now?

Or... Dawn, what do we do now?

Man, she went and used "who" for the first time. Nearly knocked me over. It's got something to do with the W and the M. YMCA and YWCA? What's the code?

FC, from personal experience of one of my own, the transfer from engineering at one institution, and subsequent change of her major to nursing at UMASS might have left some gaps for Maura to satisfy liberal arts requirements...whether during a summer or possibly an extra semester.

i doubt anyone has seen her transcripts here, but it is not to be assumed that she didn't have to play catch-up, and it is conceivable her clinicals might have been delayed? or unconventional? as Beagle suggests.

I think, but do not know (again), that there have been some conflicting comments on Maura's actual progress toward her nursing degree. It's like so much of the other info about her - difficult to positively know. I had the impression not too long ago that she had spent a semester out of college altogether. Before that, I had just blindly assumed she went from having completed 3 semesters at WP and was into her 6th one when she disappeared, as you've pointed out. But not sure whether her previous courses were applied to a nursing degree. Presumably, most of them would have qualified at least as electives, maybe some as core, especially chemistry.

Plus, there was some brief, I believe, general discussion that her transfer into the nursing program was not complete for a semester or two after she matriculated.

Sorry, but definitely in the dark about some of this. Most of this. And I don't know anyone in the registrar's office at UMass, either.

Which sounds about right, too.

Now, about that clamshell... you know, backhoe bucket, front end loader? That may have run into her near the curve, towed her back to the curve, just over the town line, put the car into the snow bank, left with her while still driving the front end loader, went to the rifle range, which runs right along the road. Might have had to wait a month or two for the ground to thaw that winter. But it was a record warm winter, I think. Not much snow on the ground compared to most other winters, IIRC.

Does Google Earth show the rifle range? And the backhoe? And the hardness of the ground on that side of Rt. 112 that year?

hi all , i have 2 people that were in nursing school at the same time as Maura and they say there were no clinicals in Norwood M.A. when Maura was there.I will double check with them and report back here.I have to ask who deemed what were the facts on the old forum.philip
Phillip perhaps you might ask these student to come forward and state where the clinicals were, that would be beneficial. To the best of my knowledge no one has come forward from Maura's class to offer up any information to the public, cannot speak for what has transpired in private.
It would be wonderful to have some insight into
the nursing programme, and clincial placements.

Seems like.
If the FBI and the UMass PD discovered all the relevant information available in Amherst, and if the family were so satisfied with the joint (local/federal) investigation, then what else can be done by looking at Amherst?
Beagle a time line from Amherst is a starting point for calrifaction of the sequence of events prior to Maura's departure from Amherst.

Perhaps we can develop an accurate time line in
Amherst, on Sunday and Monday, and determine who was the last person to see Maura. Last time she was videoed or DVD on campus.

The information is confusing and it appears that Maura was not seen on Monday anywhere other than the person reported by the Boston Globe, and allegedly this was Monday. What do we know about this person?

The beer in the bag sighting, allegedly took place Sunday morning?

Maura was with her Father on Sunday morning?

Or did the beer in the bag sighting take place on Monday Morning?

We assume that Maura did not leave the campus early in the morning and pick up the forms from
the Motor Vehicles Department but rather picked them up before leaving town? Is this known for sure?

Maura had newly developed pictures in the car, had Maura just picked these photos up or were they packed to go on a trip?

It is presumed Maura went to the liquor store on route out of Amherst? Time?

The sequence of Maura's telephones and emails on Sunday and Monday?

Maura gets off work on Sunday, then what does she do? All Sunday night and Monday morning. Maura worked on a group project, likely by herself, and don't know how this came to be known, what evidence other than if there was written material left in her room, to indicate she had done some work?

How does Maura return the item of clothing to her classmate? LEFT it WHERE to be picked up?

Who were the girls who went to the campus police and were looking for Maura, had she an appointment with these ladies?

I think there were lots of things going on in Amherst that we are unsure of? I don't have a clear picture of what Maura's activities were on Sunday and Monday, and surely there are other members who are in the fog regarding the seqence of events that transpired in Amherst, most important day of all, the day Maura went missing, Monday, Monday!

Did Maura have an appointment to meet the women who were looking for her MONDAY evening, I believe a poster here posted this information?

Odd that no one seems to know Maura around, however her absence seems to have been known shortly after Maura left Amherst? One friend says she did not know Maura was missing for several days, so Alferi was not one of the women looking for Maura Monday evening.

Perhaps I have this information mixed up?

sorry the poster stated the women went to security because they could not find Maura Monday evening, nothing was mentioned about an appointment. Trying to figure out why they would go to security if they were just dropping by, and presuming Maura's room is locked the packed boxes would not have been seen by the callers.

Beagle, it isn't unhead of for nursing students to be stalked by people they meet up with in their clinical rotations. It happened to me; it happened to one of co-students as well. Nursing schools track the occurrances of this phenomenon and I'd like to look at their records to see wht they show.
